J Thomas Tilley and wife Ida (Bradshaw)are in Mitchell County, NC in the 1900 Census. Thomas J Tilley and wife Nellie (Bennett) are in Mitchell County in the 1910 census. In both mother Martha is in the household and is listed as widowed. In the 1880 census John T Tilley is in Fannin County, GA in the household of his widowed grandmother Prudence. Martha is listed as the daughter of Prudence and single. I believe that John Thomas Tilley was the illegitimate son of Martha and Martha's being listed as widowed in 1900 and 1910 was a polite fiction. The 1850 census has Tighlman Tilley, wife Prudence, and daughter Martha living in Macon County, NC. Tighlman was born in Wilkes County, NC and the rest of the family was born in Buncombe County, NC.

Danny Bradshaw drbradshawfarm@embarqmail.com
I've seen posts regarding Whitehurst Hawkins NC to FL....Can anyone help me identify this family born in NC and living in Gadsen FL by 1850 census?? Also, could the 80 yr old Nancy Hawkins in this household, be Nancy Tilley Hawkins, wife of William Hawkins b circa 1770 in Stokes Co NC? ...or is this a separate family...is there proof of Nancy Tilley Hawkins dying earlier in NC?

1850 Florida > Gadsden > District 7 > Page 90
HH 657 657
William Hawkins 22 Waggoner b NC
Elizabeth 19
Rachael 17
Ann 14
Nancy 80 b NC
All born NC

Thanks for all replies,
Debbie

I saw your post from many years ago just now. Do you know approximately what year Tom Carson's father was born. I have been at a dead end for about 18 months. I have reason to believe that my GGGG Grandfather's name was John. GGG Grandfather was John B Tilley b1801 in Maryland. He named his oldest boy John Henry Tilley b1829 in Wash DC. His next son was Ben Franklin Tilley b1839 in Wash DC. Ben's son was John A Tilley b1963 in Tavera, WI. (my great grandfather).

I'm hoping there might be a connection with your family and John B Tilley b1801 in Maryland.

Feel free to contact me. My tree is partially posted on Ancestry as TILLEY FAMILY TREE SEGMENT.
My cell is 510 409 2547. Thanks, Jim Tilley, Berkeley, CA

Thanks for the efforts and reply. I was beginning to think I would never have a response. You would not find Joseph Ransom Tilley or Nannie Gilley Tilley. They are both buried outside of Richmond, Va. I am searching for their two young children, one of which was Gladis Tilley who died as an infant and is known to be buried there where her grandparents (my ggrandparents) are, and the other is a young boy probably 2-3 years old, drowning victim. As Ransom and Nannie had very little money at that point, I suspect that Joseph Lonzo Tilley took care of his burial. The child's name may be Raymond based upon comments made by one of the surviving children to her daughter many, many years ago. However, I also know that other children of J Lonzo are also buried there. Your listing/survey will be of immense help. Did you get to speak to the person in charge of the records for the church?

Hey Marty, its your cousin Nanita. Your grandfather was my uncle. My father is Ronaldo. I found more information on the Tilley's than you can imagine. I have it all the way back to your father's grandfather and grandmother, Mark and Amey Tilley. I think I may have found the link with the originating Tilley (John) back to 1769. They were from Tally Ho, Granville, North Carolina. Not South Carolina.

I'm trying to determine who the parents of Rebecca Tilley were. She married Pleasant Manuel in 1850. They had the following children: Granville, William, James Martin, Martha Jane, Nannie (Nancy), Hamilton, Pleasant Jr. Any info at all on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou very much for that info. I had been able to find very little info about Rebecca and was at a loss in tracing her side of the family. She was my g-g-grandmother. Apparently she died between 1870 and 1880 and her husband Pleasant died sometime before 1910. Not sure where any of them were buried though.

Wow, you have a lot of info. I had found Pleasant and Rebecca on census records and knew about children Granville, William, James, Martha, Hamilton and Pleasant Jr. The one I didn't find on any census was Emma. I actually found her death certificate on Ancestry and saw that she listed Pleasant Manuel as her father (I actually thought it might be wrong). I wonder why she wasn't listed in the census. Martha Jane was my great grandmother. She had a son named James Harson Manuel before she married John Dishmon who was my grandfather. She also had a daughter named Maggie. They went to Pittsylvania Co. VA where Harson married my grandmother, who was a Deering. I'm curious where you found the info on Rebecca and knew about Emma. I came down to NC and went to Danbury, but never found any of that. I did find a marriage cert. that showed Pleasant got remarried to a Margaret Oliver in 1880. She was much younger than he was. Do you happen to know who Pleasant's son William married? I had thought his wife was named Fannie, but I found some info that that may be a different William. We don't have really any info on the Manuel's because my grandfather Harson didn't stay around much when my father was growing up in Eden (Draper). I also went to the Delta Church, which is on Rt. 704, to look for Martha's grave but found nothing. I thought there might be another older cemetery nearby that I didn't know about. Anyway I can't thank you enough for responding, these online record can only tell you so much and it leaves a lot of gaps. By the way my name is Jim Manuel and I live in NJ.

I posted a reply with some attachments last week, but apparently it didn't go thru. Probably the attached documents were too big. I'm still trying to determine how Emma Manuel Shaffer fits into Pleasant's family. I found Emma and her family in the 1900 Census in Beaver Island Twp. and Betsy Manuel is living with them listed as Emma's mother. It says Betsy was born in 1850. That's the same year Pleasant and Rebecca were married. Also on their son Granvill's marriage cert. from 1881, his mother is listed as dead. Emma's death cert. definitely lists Pleasant as her father. I believe Rebecca and Betsy may be two different people. I've had other indications that Pleasant may have had children outside his marriage with Rebecca. In the 1880 Census there are two women named Mary Wilson listed living with the family they were mother & daughter. I pretty sure the younger Mary was Pleasant's daughter. She later moved to Pittsylvania Co., Va. and married William E. Deering (they were my great-grandparents on my father's mother's side). I've also noticed that a Delila Manuel married Aaron Tilley in 1860. I believe she was Pleasant's sister; he was the bondsman. I won't try to attach anything this time, since that didn't seem to work.

Searching for information about John Thomas Tilley (1867-1936)and his parents and siblings. He and his first wife (Josephine Bailey) supposedly walked from Fannin Co., GA in 1894 to Yancey County where he was a teacher for 20 years in a one room school. His second wife was Ida Bradshaw who he married in Relief, NC in 1897. She was the daughter of John Williams Bradshaw and Nancy Peterson. A third wife was Nellie Bennett. Having a problem finding him in the census reports. Does anyone have information or suggestions? Thanks for replying!

No contact with anyone at the church. Just did a survey of burials which took about an hour or so. Some of my former wife's clan of FULK are buried there and one was a former Elder of the church.

As mentioned, the grave of J Lon TILLEY and presumed wife (unkn 1st name) SAMMONS is a large beige colored granite stone but is covered almost completely by a couple of boxwood bushes. The cemetery is maintained but really needs some sprucing up, plus a couple of graves are leaning badly. There was some evidence of burials without markers (depressions in the ground).

Next trip to Dobson I'll look up the death records of the TILLEY lines and see if they record a burial there for Raymond or others, but as you may already know they start at 1914.

Bob

I recently surveyed the graves there, so let me know who you need. The graves of your ancestors are blocked by two boxwood bushes and you can't see the grave marker. Someone at the church needs to prune it back, otherwise it will never be seen. I also didn't find Joe Ransom Tilley or his wife Nannie Gilley.

I'll be checking the Register of Deeds in a few days or a week so can repost the parents of those who are buried there when I get the data.

Bob Carter
Greensboro, NC

Hi, My name is Marsha McAvoy-Kittel. We might be related. My great grandmother's name was Ethel T. Pavis, b. 1886 d. 1978. She's buried in the Central Burying Grounds in Hamden, Ct. Along with my great grandfather William H. McAvoy. Her parents: Pavis, Jemima Collet b. 1843 Melksham, Wiltshire,England, d. 1914. Her husband was: Pavis, Joseph, d. Aug. 12th, 1920. Also buried with them is Pavis, Tillie Brinstone, d. 1886 (age 1). They're buried in the Whitneyville Cemetery. So, according to what you've found out, Mary Pavis and Thomas Pavis could be my great, great grandparents. Cool! If you have anything to add, or would just like to contact me, my e-mail is mysplatty2@aol.com. My dad knows much more about our family history than I, so the next time I call home I'll ask what he knows (aside from the whole Mayflowe thing!). Good Health, XXX m

Glenda,
I saw your message posted on the message board. I am your Uncle Hugh's youngest daughter. One of John's grandsons and I have been working on the family tree. We also have some pictures of Grandpa & Grandma Tilley (Flynt & Nannie Hicks Tilley) and all but Terry and Bessie as far as the children. I would love to hear from you. My email address is faye.quesinberry@gmail.com.

Faye Tilley Quesinberry
