Hi Dorothy,
My John Tillotson's mother was Mary/Maria Mitchell. I once thought that he came over with his uncle, but believe now that he came as an indentured servant. He came first to Massachusetts and then to Connecticut.

I understand your excitement over a Mitchell connection but I'm not sure how relavent this one is to you. My John went to New Englnd and your's went to Virginia. Also, my John arrived in 1635 and your Mitchell Tillotson isn't born until 1794. With that much time between them, it's more likely that the Mitchell connection for you comes in much later. What I have found common is the use of a family surname as the given name to carry on the maiden name of the mother or either of the grandmothers. I would try looking at the family lines of those 3 women.

Still, we may be very distant cousins. Although I haven't really worked on my Tillotson line for a while, I believe I remember that all three John Tillotsons were related somehow: 1. John to New England; 2. John to Virginia; and 3. John of Canterbury.

If you google "Tillotson Project", you will find probably the best collection of Tillotson information available online. Even if you don't find what you're looking for, I'm sure the administrator would appreciate adding your information to the colleciton.

Good luck with your search.
Sue

One of my ancestors is a Mitchell Tillotson, born about 1794 and died May 22, 1851, in Spartanburg, SC. I can't find any information on his mother or father. So I'm at a standstill, except for a mention somewhere that the Spartanburg Tillotsons probably came through John Tillotson of Virginia.
But you can see why I find your reference to an uncle named Mitchell intriguing.
Regards,
Dorothy Tilltoson Gray Shinn
Akron, OH

I am a descendant of Henry Tillotson of 1667 born in Colne, Lancashire England. Some records I find list him as the son of John Tillotson and Dorcas Coleman. I dispute that, as records indicate she died in 1654 in Massachusetts. Could you substantiate that? Other records give her children as an infant girl, Mary Tillotson, John 111, and James.

I am looking for the correct line of my ancestors beyond Henry of 1667.

Yes, I'm another descendant of General John Tillotson through his son Ira, the architect. One of the DAR application problems was he wasn't a general until the War of 1812 -- for the Revolution he was a private in Connecticut. He is on the lists, etc., so you should be able to get your membership. I have a lot of Tillotson info and I provided a lot of info to Margaret Tillotson Ragsdale who wrote a book about the family. Most major genealogy libraries have it--you may want to try ILL.

John Tillotson and his First wife Dorcas Coleman are my ancestors. Does anyone have information about Dorcas? Savage claims she was the sister of Thomas Coleman who came in the "James" in 1635. From information I have, it looks like she might have been his daughter not sister.

Thanks for looking it up. I am working on applying to the DAR and they didn't give me an indication there would be a problem. I guess that since there are so many John Tillotsons, they want to verify who you really belong to. I do know that he is my ancestor though. I've not found Norman in any of my lines however.

General John Tillotson

Hi all,

Are there any descendants of General John Tillotson (1756-1826) and his wife, Elizabeth Brockway out here? I am a descendant of Sophronia Tillotson (their daughter)through her marriage to William Clark.

I have detailed information on the family lineage which my uncle got in a book "Ancestry of Emmons Clark" (1891). However, the book states that the documentation is in the hands of Emmons Clark's children, so most genealogical organizations will not accept the information in the book as actual proof of lineage.

If you have any information on this family, I would appreciate it.

I am a descendant of the John Tillotson you refer to. I am curious about where you got the dates and information on John, his parents, and his spouses. I have not been able to find out that much. Here is what we have on John. This information came from a book, "Ancestry of General Emmons Clark" published in 1891 which details his family lineage. Please keep in mind that the book does not state where the information came from, only that the documentation was in the hands of Emmons children.

"Born in Yorkshire, England, and emigrated to New England in ship "James" from Southampton, and arrived at Boston, June, 1635. He was one of the first settlers and original owners of property at Rowley, Mass., and the town record of original allotment of land says: "John Tillotson a lot of one acre and a half on south side of Thomas Burkley's lot." He removed to Newbury, Mass., and married (first) Dorcas Coleman, July 14, 1648. who died January 1, 1655. He married (second) Jane Evans, May 24, 1655, and about 1660 removed to Saybrook, Conn. A farmer or "planter." He died at Saybrook, about 1685."

Hope this information helps. I'm curious about the indentured servant lore from your family history and not sure how it fits with what was detailed in the book.

What other research have you done on the Tillotson line? I would like to share information with you.

I looked up John Tillotson, wife Elizabeth Brockway , on the DAR Patriot Index. He is there, but that line currently has a marker on it that says, "FUTURE APPLICANTS MUST PROVE CORRECT SERVICE." That could mean that there are more than one John and they need more info, OR it could mean that what was used as proof of service is not acceptable by today's standards, OR any number of things. I know nothing more of this line. I have a Norman S. Tillotson, b1835 VT, in my database, but not much more. Good luck in your research.

I should have quantified that as I cannot find what happened to Charles Franklin Tillotson. I know he was captured during the war and spent some time in the prison in St Louis. After he was paroled and signed the allegance, he wnet back to the war and was captured again and sentenced to death. There were 3 men to be executed that morning, and all 3 were blindfolded and lined up. Guns for 2 of the men fired blanks. Charles King and Charles Tillotson were the two spared. If you wish copies of the info I have I will email it to you. I have information on the two sons of Charles and Armilda but just cant seem to find Charlie. One son went to TX with George Cain and Armilda and the other stayed with his Grandmother Polly Cain. She willed her property to him when she died in 1886 in Macon co.

Thanks Peg. You may have just confirmed some news regarding Charles Franklin Tillotson. I have records showing that he was executed. Here exactly what the record from this Chariton County Missouri Book named "Branded as Rebels":

Tillotson, Charles. Of the Missouri State Guards, executed for parole violation at Huntsville, Missouri on September 26, 1862. Ref: O.R.

So I did some research on where exactly is Huntsville and found it in Randolph County, Missouri. This would seem like a realistic possibility that this might be our Charles Franklin Tillotson given the new military info you just shared. What do you think?

Jayme
The family of DeWitt Clinton Tillotson in Mississippi

I am related to the Tillotson family in Mississippi through Matilda Jane Brady Tillotson whose mother was a Roberts. I am searching for the following information on the Tillotson family: date of death for Charles Luther Tillotson (my records indicate that he died in 1933 but I have never found proof of this); date of death for William Wirt Tillotson; and dates of birth and death for Carrie Martin Tillotson, wife of Frank Johnson Tillotson. The following is a short genealogy that I have on the family of DeWitt Clinton Tillotson and wife, Matilda Jane Brady Tillotson.

DeWitt Clinton Tillotson (15 June 1816-4 May 1896) married Matilda Jane Brady (28 October 1830-22 February 1911) on 25 March 1847 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, settled in Colleton County, South Carolina, and later in Hinds County, Mississippi. DeWitt Clinton and Matilda Jane Brady Tillotson children were: Robert Sylvester Tillotson (18 August 1848-26 December 1890) married Laura Eliza McNair (29 July 1859-23 January 1924) on 15 November 1881 in Hinds County, Mississippi; Francis Tallulah “Lula” Tillotson (20 May 1851-17 June 1914) married William Henry Buchanan (6 December 1851-13 May 1906) on 5 May 1873 in Copiah County, Mississippi, and later settled in Greenville, Washington County, Mississippi; Dewitt Charles Tillotson (20 April 1853-23 November 1932) married Rosa Hammond (23 June 1858-2 December 1925); Mathilda Jane Tillotson (20 October 1854-2 February 1938) married Robert Lanier Moseley (3 April 1850-16 December 1915) on 27 November 1879 in Hinds County, Mississippi; John Hamilton Tillotson (10 August 1856-11 October 1911) married Martha Emma Barner (21 August 1862-13 May 1934) on 15 August 1883 in Issaqena County, Mississippi; Temperance Curtis Tillotson (14 February 1861-1863); Henry Brady Tillotson (12 July 1866-27 February 1887); Charles Luther Tillotson (3 November 1861-1933); William Wirt Tillotson (born 27 February 1867) married Belle Fuqua Oursler (30 October 1864-6 February 1919) and lived in Greenville, Mississippi; and Frank Johnson Tillotson (26 February 1869-6 January 1948) married Carrie Martin (born August 1869) on 5 October 1898 in Baldwin, Louisiana.

While researching the Civil War soldiers of Pittsford, NY, I came across the grave of Charles A. Tillotson. Charles was born March 7, 1844 to Joseph & Mary Tillotson. He died at Antietam in 1862. Mary died in 1883 at the age of 75. Joseph's death date and age at death are unknown.
Re: Tillotson

Further to previous reply, Herbert Tillotson married Ellen Pilkington at St Peters Church, Chorley, Lancashire - pictures and information of which can be viewed here:-

http://www.blackburn.anglican.org/chorleystpeter/home.html

Herbert's marriage to Ellen was actually his second marriage. He had married Elizabeth Hannah Southworth at St Georges Church, Chorley in 1900. Elizabeth died in the second quarter of 1901, not long after giving birth to Ernest Tillotson, who also died in the same quarter. The family can be seen on the 1901 England and Wales census which would have been held no longer than a few weeks before both died. The address in 32 Aniline Street, Chorley. The address actually still exist, and I can get pictures if you wish.

In the 1891 E&W census, Herbert lived with his father Allan (a widower) and his siblings at the Borough Arms public house, Bolton Street, Chorley. The Borough was demolished about 20-25 years ago, but plenty of pictures of it exist online. It was still trading as a 'pub' (or bar) right up to it closing and subsequent demolition, and I myself have been in there on many occasions.

On the census prior to that (1881), Herbert, 2 years old, was living at 59 Welbank Lane, Chorley. I'm not too sure with this one but I think it may still exist, but I'd have to check.

Isaac F. Tillotson, born 1828, produced 12-14 children and died in 1898 in N.Y.. Is he the son of Isaac Tillotson(1762-1849) and Rachel Mann? A cousin, now deceased, wrote that the Tillotsons came from Connecticut and originally from Halifax, England. This was based on information he found in the Connecticut State Library.
