DoD Identifies Marine Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two Marines who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lance Cpl. Jeremy L. Tinnel, 20, of Mechanicsville, Va.

Both Marines died July 1 from a non-hostile boat accident in the Euphrates River just off the shore of Al Anbar province. They were both assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. The accident is under investigation.

Terry Lutz Tinnel is my grandfather's step-sister. Her parents were Barrett Tinnel and Lizzie Shepherd. Barrett died either during the Spanish Flu pandemic or the Typhoid pandemic in 1918. I believe the same thing happened to Beckham. He died young.

Lizzie Shepherd remarried to John Raymond Hall. Hence the connection to my Grandfather. I would be very interested in the pictures you have. I'm trying to put together the Hall side of the family and having very little success.

For confirmation, look at the 1920 census. You will see Lizzie Shepherd, with Beckham and Terry listed (not sure why Beckham is listed, because he died before the census). Listed after is her father, Robert Henry Shepherd. Listed after that group is the Halls, John and his two daughters with a brother Joe listed. Jump ahead to the 1930 census, search for John Hall and you will find Lizzie, my great-uncle, grandfather and great-aunts plus a step-daughter named Terry L. Tinnel.

Sarah Tinnel Clark married John Norris in Wayne Co., OH 25 Sep 1828. I just recently learned of her middle name from another Norris family researcher. Other family notes say that Sarah Clark was daughter of George Clark, who was born in Ireland, settled in PA, and there married Margaret Wilson, a daughter of Erin (Wilson). Since the 2nd info does not mention Tinnel, I am at a loss to establish a connection. I am still working on presence of George Clark in Wayne Co., OH and back into PA. Any ideas on Tinnel?
