My father's uncle, Ragnar Tjernström, has documented our ancestry back to 1580. All the ancestors were farmers living in three parishes in the Västerbotten county in northern Sweden (the name is a typical 'northern' name) , they all seemed to find a wife and a farm within walking distance. Unfortunately, only one of these ancestors emigrated to the US, and he returned within three years...

The spelling is old, a modern spelling should be Tjärn (a small lake) and ström, meaning 'river'. Many families nowadays spell with an ä, I insist on the e...

I was born in one of the three parishes....
