Nicholas Tobey of Somersetshire, 1674

The Will of Nicholas Tobey of Somersettshire England, made 1674, is abstracted in the Maryland Calendar of Wills, Volume I, page 87. One of the witnesses to this Will was my ancestor John Gilbert, a merchant. John Gilbert imported goods and people to Maryland, and that is how he obtained a great deal of acreage.

Because John Gilbert was a witness to the Will of Nicholas Tobey, I think they may have been relatives, or in the same business, or both. I also think that means John Gilbert was also from Somersetshire, England. Anybody out there researching Nicholas Tobey?

Who was the Deborah Tobey, said to have married Israel Tupper in Sandwich on 24 Nov 1770? It is usually asserted that she is the daughter of Joshua and Maria (Tobey) Tobey, but they were married in late 1752 and their daughter Deborah was born on 7 Sep 1772.

I am part of the Tobey Family in Oregon. But I do not know much about them. I am the great grandaughter of Orville Keneth Tobey 1, the grandaughter of Orville Keneth Tobey 2, and my uncle is Orville Keneth Tobey 3 :) I believe my greatgrandmothers name was Edna? I think? My great grandfather died two years ago in Nov, and my grandfather lives in AK. I went to see my great grandfather a few times. He was a very hard worker and had a successful business till he passed. I never met my grandfather. My uncle lives in prinville oregon. I don't see him much, and have no contact with my mother. Tobey connection in Oregon

James Louis Tobey
Born: 3-26-1894 ( Chillicothe, Missouri ) Livingston County.
Died: 4-5-1983 ( Eagle Point, Oregon ) Jackson County.

James, or as we all called him "Tobey" was my Grandmother's 3rd husband. He was the only Grandfather on my Dad's side I knew. Tobey and my Grandmother ( Gladys America Mynatt )...her maiden name were married 9-14-59 in Eugene Oregon ( Lane County ). Gladys' other married names prior were, Howard and Randall. Tobey and Gladys are buried in Eagle Point National Cemetery ( Eagle Point, Oregon ) Plot A1714.

Tobey had a barber shop in Gold Beach in the early 60's. I can provide anyone with pictures if interested.

He came here in 1981 from Milford, Mich.

He was a sheet metal fabricator for Cooney Engineering and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary Tobey, and his infant son, Glen.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Tobey of Crystal River; his daughter, Lenore Whitmer of Grand Blanc, Mich.; two sisters, Marian Coon of Crystal River
and Janet Ostrander of Arizona;
grandson, Jay Whitmer;
and cousin, Larry (Lou) Moss of Homosassa.

I am writing a collective biography of the 169 librarians who headed neighborhood branches of the New York Public Library, 1901-1950.

Two of them were sisters, Ellen Howard Tobey (1874-????) and Lillian Q. Tobey (1874-????) who were born in Maine. Their parents were Enoch G. and Mary Tobey.

Ellen resigned from NYPL in 1911 to be married and she became the second wife of Donald Banks Tobey (1879-????). His first wife had died in 1910. I don't believe that Lillian ever married.

I'd appreciate any information on any of these individuals.

They lived at 1316 or 1816 Park Avenue in Bridgeport Ct
and took care of my aunt, Josephine Schnellbach/Snellback,
until Josephine died in 1918.

Mr. and Mrs James Oertle lived at the same address.

I believe Mrs. Tobey and Mrs. Oertle may have been sisters and had shared the maiden name of Steegmuller/Steggmuller, Steegmiller.

One of the most important silversmiths of the 1800s was Edward M. Tobey of Albany NY. He made Coin silver silverware from 1849-1852. He was in partnership with Benjamin L. Hood who married Edward's sister, Lucinda Catherine Tobey. Edward moved to St. Cloud MN and died there in 1858. Edward was the brother to my gg grandfather.

Was delighted to receive your e-mail. Have a surprise for you - George and Ann had 12 children. Listed by birthdates, they are: George Franklin "Frank", Stephen, Andrew, Charles, Henry, James, Anna, Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, Caroline, William, Samuel.

Also, have pages from a Family Record that lists George and Ann plus children. Ann was a Whipple which goes to the Revolutionary War.

Samuel (5) was born in 1785 and married Lucy Paul on Nov. 27, 1806, according to the Tobey genealogy of Rufus Tobey & Rev. Pope. Oliver Paul Tobey, their son, was born Feb. 26, 1826 in Eliot. Left home at age 13 and married in Michigan.

My Grandfather was R.E. Tobey Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His Fathers name was Charles Valentine Tobey and His mother was Lovenia. He had several brothers and the moved around quite a bit. They farmed tobacco in and around Kentucky.I have had no luck searching myself hope this helps.

Lucy Tobey b. 1883 had a brother (hard to read) H.Y. Tobey)
living with her and her husband David Franklin Parker in the 1910 Sebastian County census. Family members state she had a brother called "Dave" that lived to be almost 100? We know nothing about her-no middle name, parent's names, nothing. According to 1910 cencus her father was born in Missouri and mother in Tennessee. We only know her maiden name and birth/death date. I'll gladly share decendent info with anyone of this line. Thank you.

I have recently discovered the grave of Luke Smith (born 6 Nov. 1821, died 1867). He was the husband of Alma Ann Tobey (22 Aug. 1825-1877), daughter of Samuel Tobey and Lucy Wheeler. He is buried in Long Creek Cemetery, Hood County, Texas. All that is left of the stone is his name and the month and year of birth.

I read the newspaper article. Because of the name Granville C. among the children of James E. Tobey, I would suggest that you look for Granville Tobey and wife Nancy D. Bruce. I haven't followed this Tobey line, very thoroughly. This Granville C. Tobey was born about 1848 in MO. He was the son of Orville or Ovel Tobey and Elizabeth Johnson. Orville and Elizabeth lived in Jennings Co, IN in 1840 and Camden Co, MO in 1850. This line traces back to the 1600's in Sandwich, MA. Below is all the information that I have on Granville Tobey and wife Nancy Bruce.

1870 census Carroll Co, MO: Granville Tobey, age 20? MO; Calvin, age 20 MO; Lovina, age 18 MO; Wm, age 16 MO; Elisabeth S., age 52 IN; and Elisabeth, age 14 MO.

1880 census Polk township, Marion Co, IA: G. C. Tobey, age 30 MO; Nancy, age 20 IA; Robert Crasier?, age 51 and others.

1885 State census, Newton Township, Jasper Co, IA: Granville C. Tobey, and Nancy D.

1900 census Carroll Co, MO: G. C. Tobey, head, Jun 1846, age 53 MO NY MO, married 25 years; wife Della N., May 1859 IA MO IA; and son Rex C., May 1888, age 12 IA MO IA.
