DURANT, Iowa -- Eva 'Ruth' Toft, 84, Durant, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Davenport.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. The Rev. Nancy Hoelter will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist, Kathy Luethye and vocalist, Henry Bentley. Casket bearers are Kimberly Fee, Kevin Toft, Dianne Avery, Larry Schlapkohl, Mike Klaessy and Elizabeth Smith. Burial will be at the Durant Cemetery, Durant.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Durant Library.

Mrs. Toft was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Tama, the daughter of Ralph and Eva Martin Avery. She married Evald V. Toft June 10, 1940, in Tama. He preceded her in death May 13, 1980.

She graduated from Tama High School in 1936. She then attended State College of Iowa, now the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, where she earned a teaching degree.

Prior to marriage and children, she taught school in Princeton and later resumed her full-time teaching career in 1964 at the Durant Community Schools. She retired from her second grade classroom there in 1985. In addition to being a homemaker and teacher, she also served as a bookkeeper for the Durant Body Shop, which she and her husband owned and operated.

She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant, the Durant Women's Club, the Durant Education Association, The Iowa State Education Association, The National Education Association, and served on the board of the Durant Library. She was also a member of AARP and the Quad City Times Plus 60 Club.

She was an avid reader with additional interests in gardening, crafts and traveling. Her greatest love, however, was teaching and her students. She proudly kept up with their accomplishments and achievements throughout their teen and adult lives.

Survivors include a son, Brian Toft and wife Darlene of Davenport; four daughters, Sharon Heesch and husband David of Davenport, Barbara Klaessy and husband Don of Durant, Judith Dell and husband Terry of Clinton and Debra Toft of Palatine, Ill.; a brother, Rex Avery of Tama; a stepbrother, Wayne Reed of Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Raymond Avery in infancy; and her stepmother, Louise Reed Avery.

I am the Grandson of a Toft from Youlgreave in Derbyshire and I have been researching the Toft Family originating from Youlgreave for some time. Youlgreave appears to be a major source of the Toft Family and I have linked them to a number of other areas around the UK. Unfortunately, as you didn't identify a DOB for Bill in your question, I can't really check my tree to see if I have a possible match for Bill in it. Grateful if you would identify a DOB, actual or approximate so I can see what I can find.

Curious Fox website has a gazeteer which lists parishes in UK, and it has 8 with Chorlton in the name. 2 are in Cheshire and 4 in Lancashire, so they are your most likely locations.

Hi. Your grandfather was named Falle Christensen Toft, b. August 20, 1845 in Starup, Haderslev Parish, Northslesvig,Denmark to farmer Christen Pedersen Toft, b. August 26, 1803 in Starup - died at March 23, 1869 in Starup. He married April 18, 1834 in Starup Lutheran Church Maren Nissen.
A brother to your g.father Hans Christian Toft, b. Oct 30, 1842 also emigrated to Amerika. He married Anne Skov in 1867 in New York. - A sister Caroline (Carolyn) Toft, b. July 30, 1848 emigrated in 1872 and married in Iowa Soren Holbeck. A son John Christian Holbeck, b. May 12, 1885 in Iowa died at Feb 12, 1973 in S. Dakota.

Toft, Falle from Denmark

I'm looking for any information regarding my great grandfather Falle Toft. Story is that he came from Demark in the late 1860's to avoid going into the German army. He came to the USA and worked his way across the country to California. I found a record of him working in Nevada mining.
I'm told he communicated for awhile with his family back in Denmark but then ceased and wouldn't speak of them anymore. He married Maggie McClusky in San Francisco in 1894. He was 44 at the time.

I'm researching my great grandfather, Falle Toft. I believe he came to the US to dodge the german draft. Probably about 1869 or so.
Story was he stopped communicating with the Toft back in Olvang, Denmark because they were looking for money to be sent.

He married Maggie in 1894 in San Francisco.

I recently purchased this book at an estate sale. It is now out of print. It deals with the Toft family in Door County, Wisconsin. They talk about the Toft beginning at Bailey's Harbor, Thomas Toft and Julia Anne Panter, Miss Emma Toft, Toft Point Resort, Native Americans at Toft Point, as well as many anecdotes about other families living in the Toft Point area.

I have no relatives in Wisconsin, but I would like to connect this out of print book with a family researcher for Toft. There is a 1996 copy of the Toft family tree also.

I have posted prior about my grandfather Magnus Toft born in Lindaas, Norway and sailed from Bergen, Norway on the Bergensfjord arriving in the USA on Oct 7, 1924, settling in Minn. His brothers that also immigrated are Bertin Toft, who settled in Wisc. and Ivor Toft who settled in Calif. Anders Anderson Toft (August 18, 1793 - 1869) married Berthe Harkildsdatter Gaustum in Follebu, Gausdal, Norway. He was the 6th Toft owner of Toft Estates in the Gausdal Valley. Of his 9 children, at least 2 emigrated to America. I have contacts with some of them, especially still in Norway. Carl Magnus Toft, born 1876, was his youngest grandson.

Hello Alma. I have an information, who says, that Eline Christine Toft died 19. Jan.1942 in Oakland, Alameda. She married 17. Jun. 1873 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz Mr. Conrad Peter Jessen, born 4. Feb. 1846 in North Slesvig, DK and past away in 1923 in Gilroy, Santa Clara. I don't think, that Eline has a family relationship to my Nis Hansen Toft, born 15. Aug. 1858 in Agerskov, North Slesvig. His occupation was a "miller". - A message to you from Janeen Ward in Oct. 1999 - jward72245@aol.com -says, that she is looking too for Nis Hansen Toft. She has a copy of his emigration book. Nis Hansen Toft emigrated in May 1881 to San Francisco - contract 3285I8081T0616.
I will be very pleased, if I could receive a copy of this emigration book from Janeen to my Toft Family History research in DK and USA with over 400 pages with a lot of pictures back to relatives born in 1811. But I can't get Janeen's e-mail address or her postal address at this time.
Do you have a knowlegde to Janeen and her new address?
Your G.G.father is probaply born in Aabenraa - in German language Appenrade. Your G.G.mother is born on an island named Als - in German language Alsen.
Next time; I visit our National Center for Church Records, I will look for it.

In May 1881, he emigrated as miller to San Francisco. A message in Oct. 1999 tells me, that Janeen has his emigration book. I will be very hapy, if i could have a copy of this book. The e-amil address to Janeen is now incorrect.

The only info. I have came from my G.Grandmother and she was almost 100 at that time.I have my G.Grandfather born in 5/10/1855 in Appurah, DK. G.Grandmother born 2/10/1854 in Alse,Dk. Her name was Meta Dorothea Ravn. I think Jessen was his sister married name.Her and her husband owned a hotel in Watsonville, Ca.and that was where N.H. Toft went to when he came to Ca. Does this help.?

Owego — Alyce E. Toft, 42, of Owego and formerly of Plattsburgh, died on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident.

Alyce was born on Apr. 17, 1958, in Plattsburgh. She graduated from Beekmantown High School and Schenectady County Community College.

Before moving to Owego, she worked for Marriott Corporation in Texas and New Hampshire. She was the cook/manager for the Owego School District and was currently employed as the food service manager for the Candor School District. Alyce is a member of St. Patrick's Church of Owego.

She is predeceased by her father, Joseph Perry and her brother, James Perry.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald Toft, of Owego; two sons, Jeremy and Joseph Toft, both of Owego; a grandson, Corbyn; her mother, Dorothy Perry, formerly of Plattsburgh; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda Barber-Wattie and John Wattie of Plattsburgh and Susan and Paul Taliga of Hazelton, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Estey & Munroe Funeral Home, 15 Park Street, Owego, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Owego, with the Rev. William Moorby officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made for her sons in Alyce's memory to the Alyce E. Toft Memorial Fund, care of Tioga State Bank, 1135 State Route 17C, Owego, NY 13827.

I know a little:
They had two children, Mary Jane born 1883 and Julia Ann born 1886.
William then died in 1886 and she married William John Catherwood in 1888.
They had two children, Robert born 1888 and William John born 1891.
In 1901 Esther was a widow, a charwoman at Liverpool Workhouse.

I don't know what happened to the children

Any information about the Toft family from Sheffield, specifically the family of Francis Toft (b 1854) whose father was Benjamin. Francis was born Sheffield and lived at 30 Duke Lane. Francis married Louisa Daffin 31/7/1894 at Stavely where they had 7 children Benjamin (my grandfather), Mahala, John, Minnie, Harry, Sarah and Leonard.
