Well, 9 years later, here I am with information on the Bark Azor and the Liberian Exodus. My husbands family was on the very same ship that left from Charleston, SC in 1878. I actually have a copy of the ship's manifest. I'll love to exchange info as I'm sure our ancestors knew each other.

Your grandfather was a close part of our family. I knew him very well. I am Fred's oldest girl. My dad and your grandfather were very close. I also knew your grandma, who was very nice to me my mom and immediate family. I visited "Littlefield" a few times. Which of the sons or daughters are your parents? Who is a minister?

Yes, Monroe is the son of Harden. You are one of Fred's children? Fred is my grandfather Courtney's brother. Both of them had Monroe as a father.

John S. TOLBERT, 65, route 2, Pulaski, died this morning at Pulaski Hospital. He is survived by his wife Annie TOLBERT, three daughters Mrs. Emaline COLEMAN, Hillsville; Miss Cennie TOLBERT and Mrs Lillie McFALL, both off Pulaski, four sons, Willie and James of Pulaski, Lewis of Roanoke, and Luther of Galax.Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Woodlawn Methodist church, with the Rev. Harman Bolt in charge. Burial at the Woodlawn cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Thompson of Kingsport, Tenn., Mrs. Gladys Randell of Glenallen, and Miss Helen Tolbert of Roanoke; four sons, Leonard Tolbert of California, Guy Tolbert of Richmond, and Daniel and Samuel Tolbert of Pulaski; a step son, Fred Marshall of Hiwassee; a sister Mrs. James Wright of Sylvatus; two brothers, Jim Tolbert of Indiana and Elmer Tolbert of Beartown, W.Va. The body will remain at Strickler’s Funeral Home pending arrangements.

DUBLIN — Junior Willie Tolbert, age 78 of Dublin, died Friday October 15, 2004 at his residence. Born May 21, 1926 in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Elijah “Bill” Washington & Lillie Mae Marshall Tolbert. He was a retired employee of Radford Army Ammunition Plant having worked in the water filtration plant, & was a member of the Atomic Workers Union. He was an avid bee keeper & loved working in his vegetable and flower gardens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Velma Dalton Tolbert, daughter Ada Mae & brothers L.A. & Shelby Tolbert. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law; Larry D. & Sue Tolbert of Draper; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Mike Shaw of Dublin; one brother, Emmett Tolbert of Newbern; two sisters, Ruby Dalton of Newbern, & Thelma Stanton of Stuart, Florida. Also survived by four grandchildren; Velena & her husband R.A. O’Dell of Kernersville, N.C., David & his wife Anita Hungate of Hardie, Va., Michael Baker of Christiansburg, Va., & Christopher Tolbert of Draper. He is also survived by great grandchildren Landon & Afton O’Dell & Jacob and Alyssa Baker. Funeral services will be held Monday October 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Louis “Doc” Tolbert died yesterday at a Richmond hospital, according to a message received by his father, G.H. Tolbert, of Woodlawn.
The remains are to be brought to the home of his sister, Mrs. Lois Tolbert on Madison Avenue. Funeral arrangements had not been completed today pending arrival of the body. Burial, however, is planned at Woodlawn.
Survivors include his father and mother, six sisters and three brothers.

Robert J. Tolbert, 77, of Rockville, Md. died Thursday in a Bethesda, Md. Hospital.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Iowa M. Tolbert; four daughters, Mrs. Katie Jarrells, Hiwassee; Mrs. Ruby Marshall, Pulaski; Mrs. Elizabeth Curtis, Rockville; Mrs. Dorothy Crowns, Silver Springs, Md.; six sons, Leonard Tolbert, Gaithersburg, Md.; Clinton O. Tolbert, Bland; Archie, David, Donald, and Eddie, all of Rockville; one brother, Danwood Tolbert, Narrows; also 35 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 pm from New Dublin Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. William T. DuBose. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will remain at Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home until one hour before the service. The family will be at the residence of Mrs. Ruby Marshall, Pulaski.

TOLBERT Shelby Ray

Shelby Ray Tolbert died January 21 at his home in Traverlers Rest, South Carolina. Born May 9, 1939 in Pulaski Co. Va. He was the son of the late Elijah W. and Lillie Mae Marshall Tolbert. Grandparents were John S. and Letha Ann Norman Tolbert and Abraham C. and Polly Ann Reece Marshall. He was also preceeded in death by a brother L.A. Tolbert.He is survived by his wife Angela Stehr Tolbert and two daughters Sabrina Hyslop and Melissa Bridges. Three Sons Shelby R. Jr., Ricky and Charles Tolbert He is also survived by two brothers: J. W. and Emmett W. Tolbert, two sisters Ruby Dalton and Thelma Stanton.and nine grandchildren. Also numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held at Johnson Funeral home in Traverlers Rest, S.C. on January 25, with burial in Grand View Memorial Gardens.
Shelby served over 22 years in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Sgt. Major. Graveside Military rituals were performed by the honor guard of Fort Gordon , Georgia with a 21 gun salute.

Born January 31, 1932, he was the son of the late Sidney Milton Tolbert, Sr. and Thelma Chapman Tolbert. He retired from the Celanese Plant with 40 years of service. He attended the Newbern Community Christian Church. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served during the Korean Conflict. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery where the V.F.W. Post #1184 will conduct full military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements for the family.

It's a pleasure to meet you all!!! My name is Richard D. Welch formerly of Pulaski, VA. Although I haven't lived in the area for a few years (5 to be exact) have through some discovery learned that I am also related to the Tolberts. My Grandmother's name was Cennie Elizabeth (McFall) Welch (1934-2006), daughter to Silas (1908-1990) and Lillian "Lilly" Mae (Tolbert) McFall (1911-1990). I never realized there were sooo many.

I may have posted this before but I'm not sure. I am looking for any information on Elmer Jerry Tolbert. Birth unknown. I'm not sure he is still alive. He may not be. He was married to Ethylene Baker. Her birth is also unknown. They were the parents of my mother. She was Joy Diane Tolbert. Born 24 Feb 1954 in Mt. Airy, NC. She had 1 sister and 3 brothers. Linda, Doug, Wayne and Ricky. Their births are unknown. My mother died 21 Nov 1999. I have no other information. I would really like to know what I can find out on him and my grandmother. I do know or was told that my grandmother divorced Elmer. I'm unsure of any dates. My mother and her siblings spent a few years at Mills Home here in Thomasville.

I had posted this some where else around here and someone did find maybe a census record or something that had my mother and her father listed. But I can't remember where it was located or what it was. Please let me know of any information you may have. This is the ONLY missing link in my history.

I'm unsure about death. I believe he might have died in 1862 and might have been a private in the 41st infantry, Cobb County, GA. I am searching for the father of Mary Tolbert who married Alexander Perry. The only Mary Tolbert I can find in this Georgia area was the daughter of an Andrew Jackson Tolbert.

James Chapel Tolbert was born on 31 Oct 1831 in South Carolina or Georgia and died on 16 Aug 1905 in Cherokee County, Alabama, at age 73.
James married Mary Emeline Little, daughter of William L Little James Burchy Powell, on 31 Aug 1851 in Carroll County, Georgia.
Children from this marriage were:
F Mary Tolbert was born in 1855 in Georgia.
F Martha Tolbert was born in 1860 in Georgia.
Martha married James Dobbins about 1879.
M William Franklin Tolbert was born on 4 Mar 1861.
William died on 13 Nov 1933 in Rock Run, Cherokee County,

My grandfather was Robert Marvin Tolbert and my mother was Lorraine Tolbert. I am trying to find ancestors prior to my grandfather and also find out where the Tolbert family originally came from. Years ago, I was told that they came over from Scotland. My daughter is studying at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland for a semester, spring 2009, and would like to be able to maybe trace some of our heritage. Donna Christine Talbert married into my family. She's the only Talbert listed in my family book; however, there are a lot of Tolberts. You had a Thelma Mary listed. I was wondering if its possible thats Thelma Marie. If so that's my grandmother! I tried to cross reference some of the other Tolberts that I have, but none came up in the short time I searched.

We might have something going on here my great grand father was William, Daniel, Frank brother because I was told that there was four brother and two stayed in the United State and two went to Liberia Africa. My cousin Richard Tolbert, he in Africa because he the American and Liberia contection. In 2006 I have the chance meet the Liberia that move here a few few ago.

William Thomas Tolbert's father was Thomas Elliot Tolbert, b, ca 1842 in NC married 16 Apr 1867 in Bedford Co., TN to Frances Ann Andrews, b. 16 Aug 1878 in Tenn. She was the daughter of Richard Andrews and Levina Baker (my ggg grand parents) They were on the 1870 census in Bedford Co. Shellyville, TN and 1880 in Moore Co., TN, 8th Dist. Haven't been able to find them on others as yet. Children were:
John S., b.ca 1870; William Thomas, 1875; Mary Francis, 1868; Emma A., ca 1873;and G.M.J., ca 1878.
