When inquireing about family memembers given the time line
any birth records before july 1931 will not be located in San Juan P.R. you must know the location of their birth to obatain birth records. Midwifes were not documenting the birth of children after 1940s prior to this time it was not documented unless the father went to regester the child mother could not regsester the children with the fathers last name untill the mid 1970's. If the father did go the child would have the mothers last name. The early 1800's it was not required to have a birth certificate. If you know were the person was as a child most likly you can find a babtismal record or find the liven with a family members in the census. Many could not read or write but, would tell stories according to events that took place this will give you a time line to begin a search. Many children were left with family members because labor workers would go to wear the work was and leave the children with family. you may find a person with the mothers last name as a child and cannot find them as adult because by that time they are using the mothers and fathers last name.
