Re: Winslow Parker Toll

Winslow Parer Tolle was the grandfather of my grandfather:

William Wesley Tole, born in Pike County, IL in 1860, to James Henry Toll and Harriett Richards. He moved to Montgomery County, Kansas as a child, and died in Liberty, Kansas in 1916 of tetanus.

As you can see, the name spelling is different over time in various records. Many people did not have extensive educations and hand written records were often spelled at the whim of the scribe.

My family has persistently used the spelling with a single L since the 1870s in Kansas.

James Henry Toll is written on the marriage record with Harriett Richards always appearing with TT at the end of her name in all of the records we have located.

My family tells the anecdotal story that the Missouri Compromise, making Missouri a slave state, prompted the move across the big river from Pike County, Missouri to Pike County, Illinois, where my grandfather was born. I have not found supporting written documentation to validate the family history, but, the family in Kansas was devoutly Methodist. My grandmother was a Kelso who also moved to Liberty as a child. She was born in Montgomery County, Indiana to another devoutly Scotch-Irish family of staunch Methodists, also vehemently opposed to slavery. Her grandfather had been raised with slaves in Maryland and owned them as an adult in Kentucky. He, however, moved to Indiana with all of his families of slaves and settled they all on his Montgomery County, Indiana farm. They, altogether, built two identical adjoining homes at right angles to each other with a summer kitchen outside, serving both homes. The Spencer slaves had been freed upon moving into Indiana, but all stayed together to build the farm and raise the crops, sharing the Spencer family cemetery in a grove on the shared farm in Parke County, Indiana.

You must be a distant cousin, if you descend from our mutual ancestral father who had many children and several wives!

Good luck hunting family!

Susanne, daughter of Janet Tole, daughter of William Wesley Tole, son of James Henry Tole, son of Winslow Parker Tolle.

I believe William Edward TOLL was baptised in 1843 in Bedford (town), Bedfordshire (BDF), England.

I have very little on him - but I have done a lot on his sibblings and ancestors!

He's descended from Robert TOLE (bapt 1725 Pavenham, BDF), wheras I'm descended from Robert's presummed brother, John TOLE.

Robert, John, and John's parents moved from Pavenham to Wilstead (BDF) in about 1750, possibly when the church spire collapsed at Wilstead (they were carpenters).

Earlier generations are less certain, but I think I've traced them buck to the early 1500s in Pavenham (as TOOLDE/TOLD).

Happy to share info.

Kind Regards,

Ken Toll
researching TOLLs (& TOLEs) worldwide
Ellen Toll in Quebec Canada

I am researching Ellen Toll who was born early to mid 1800's in Ireland and moved to Quebec Canada with her family. Her father is John Toll. She has five female siblings:Elizabeth, Mary, Bridget, Margaret and Theresa. Ellen is my Great Grandmother. I can find several Toll names in Census in later years so the name survived. There must of been other male Toll's in the area that may have been related to her father John.

Other related names in this time and region are: Muldoon,Halverson,McCann,Hearn.

I'm not sure that this will help, but here goes...

The only TOLCHINSKY's I've found specifically linked to TOLLs are in England. Rachael TOLCHINSKY alias Renee TOLL died in London in 1946. Her mother was Lottie TOLCHINSKY. Also mention in the Administration of her property were Hyman and Annie - both TOLCHINSKY, but relationship unclear.

I also recall from a Jewish List that many (most?) Jewish TOLLs in the USA are of Russian origin, so it might be worth investigation of that possiblity...

Kind Regards,
Ken,
in rather frosty England.

My grandparents both came to the US from Russia in 1889. Their surname was Tolchinsky which they shortened to Toll between 1900 and 1920. I can not find them in the 1910 census. Were you able to find any information on Russian Tolls that might relate to the Tolchinsky's?
John TOLL, labourer, 25, of Bo'ness, son of John TOLL and Eliza nee CAREY, deceased,
married on 2 Apr 1861 at Rosemount Linthen RC church to:
Anne O'BRIEN, -, spinster, 20, of Linlithgow, dau of Hugh O'BRIEN, labourer, and Anne nee McGuire, deceased.
marriage ref: 668/1/11 Linlithgow burgh.

I note that in the IGI there is a Hugh TOLL bapt 7 sep 1865 in Bo'ness to John & Ann. Also a Margaret TOLL bapt 10 Jul 1863 to John & Ann. As always, appropriate checks should be made before relying on IGI entries.

That should get you back into the OPRs (Old Parish Registers) for Scotland.

'Fraid you can't assist directly with DNA testing - it has to be from a male TOLL for surname studies. Females don't have 'Y' DNA, which is what they use for testing. Females do have mitocondrial DNA, but that passes from mother to daughter, so again, of minimal value to surname studies. But many thanks for the offer though.

Kind Regards,

Ken
Hi Anne,
I'm afraid my Scottish research is not as up to date as some other Countries.
I have extracted the Old Parish Register entries and the civil Registration of Births from 1855 to 1900 (marriages & Deaths for a slightly smaller period).

The only Charlotte TOLL the I have was born 27 april 1888, dau of John TOLL, a coal miner from the Square of Faskine, and Martha nee SMITH.
John & Martha were married in 1881 in Rutherglen.
(I probably have their Marriage Record if you are interested).

They clearly moved about, as there is a trail of children in the Records, e.g. 2 addresses in Calderbank (1890 & 1896).

There is a TOLL family in Airdrie in 1899, but can't see a connection at present.

HTH,

Ken

Ken:

Wm & Bessie emmigrated from England in 1873. According to Wm's headstone, he was born 8 Oct 1848 in Cornwall. He died 22 Dec 1943 and is buried in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery in Salina, Saline County, Kansas. Bessie was born 18 Oct 1858 in Devonshire, England and died 1 Jan 1936 in England. I found something last year that suggested her maiden name was CAME.

Wm filed for his intention to become a US citizen on 22 July 1876 in Saline County, Kansas. He became a citizen 26 Sept 1906.

They had four children: John M., b. 1879 in Kansas; Edwin B b. 1880 in Kansas; Elizabeth, b. 1882 in Kansas; Delia b. 1883 in Kansas.

I find no record of this family on the USA 1880 census. They are on the 1900-1930 censuses.

The entire family traveled to England in 1891 on the RMS Teutonic. In November 1904 Bessie and Delia traveled to England on the SS Majestic. In June 1912 Wm & Bessie traveled to England on the SS Mauretania. In May 1916 William traveled alone to England on the SS Philadelphia.
And in Nov 1920 William & Bessie traveled to England on the SS Imperator. At that time he was 72 and she was 62.

Their son, John, married Sadie (Unknown) and had three children. I don't know about Elizabeth. Edwin and Delia never married to my knowledge but they can be found on the 1920 & 1930 census living together. Edwin served in the US Millitary..don't know more than that.

Well, I hope this helps you. I do know that a daughter of Richard and Rachel's...Maud, decided to record some of her childhood memories when she was 95. One memory she recalled was the other TOLLs living in the area. She said her dad and the other guy talked a while and ended up deciding that they could find no connection between their families.

Marlene
And change Isabelle Francis to Isabelle Frances.

I'll send you my info on William Toll in a separate posting.

Good to hear from you.

Marlene

Hi Marlene, Good to hear from you.
I have done a few more updates to the TOLL of Germoe Tree since we were last in contact. Current Version is issue 16, dated 10 feb 2005. New version imminent. Will send you a text file.

I have Richard Nicholas TOLL (bapt 1845 Germoe) married to Rachel, but didn't have a Surname. I only have one child recorded, Joseph TOLL born about 1868 in Bigland, Maryland. I have his line back to the late 1600s. His brother James (baptised 1843 in Germoe) maried Isabella Francis STEVENSON (I believ you provided this data). Richard & James were the sons of James TOLL and Eliza HARRY. I knew they'd been in Maryland, but hadn't realised they had settled in Kansas too.

William John TOLL (of Treehill farm, Cornwall), is part of the Bere Ferrers (Devon) TOLL family. These locations are either side of the River Tamar, which divides Devon & Cornwall.
William and his 3 Children appear in the England 1891 Census, staying with Ann Moseley Marchant TOLL, William's stepmother?. I've traced this line back to the 1750s.

As always, I would very much appreciate any info on any TOLL family.

I've now started a TOLL DNA project - 3 of us tested so far, including a Bere Ferrers descendant, but no matches so far.

Kind Regards,

Ken

Jeff,

My great-granduncle was Richard Nicholas Toll. He was baptised 29 June 1845 in the parish of Germoe in the county of Cornwall, England. ( I know his tombstone says 1850 but I have a copy of his baptism record) . He died 3 Sept 1898 in Kansas. He married Rachel White before 1879 in Lonaconing in the county of Allegany in Maryland. THey had six children. Three were born in Maryland...Joseph 1879-1952; John James 1882-1899; Lottie 1885-1955. Three were born in Kansas: Walter 1887-1950; Maud Pearl 1892-1994; Harry Earl 1893-1973.

Hope this helps. Please contact me off this message board for more info.

Marlene
mfconner@cox.net

Ken,

It's been a while since we "talked". Hope all is well with you. Hope I can clear up some things about the TOLLs in Kansas, USA. There were TWO different and unrelated families living in the Saline, Kansas area. One family was Richard and Rachel (White) TOLL who I am related to. Richard's brother was James TOLL (my ggf) who I had inquired about with you several years ago. The other family of TOLLs was William and Elizabeth (Bessie) TOLL, also from Cornwall, but not related as far as I know, although I have tried ! On William's headstone it states he was from Cornwall. He and Bessie traveled to England several times while living in Kansas. The farming life must have been good them ! If you would like any further information on them, I will be glad to give you what I have.

Marlene

I have just re-read this thread in full, and I'm still rather confused....

The Thread started with a Richard TOLL, born 1850, Wales.
The year tallies with Marlene's headstone photo.

However, this doesn't agree with the Germoe (Cornwall) baptism of Richard Nicholas TOLL in 1845.
Did Richard not know his birth year?
Or have we got two (or more) Richards?

Just to confuse matters further, Richard Nicholas TOLL (bapt 1845 Germoe) had a second cousin, Richard Francis Henry TOLL, born 1850, Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire (near Wales!).

It would be easy to assume that this second Richard is the one in the photos - except that I have him and his brother in Australia!!! He married Caroline Oats PRIDEAUX in 1874 in Victoria, Aus, and died in Eaglehawk in 1895 aged 45. I photographed the headstone during a research trip in 1999....

Unless I have missed an entry, there are no further Richard TOLLs births Registered 1840 - 1860 in England or Wales.

A quick check on the 1851 Census on ancestry.com reveals NO Richard TOLLs born in Wales, and three Richard TOLLs born in England - the above two plus a third born in Beer Ferrers in about 1843.

This latter Richard was Richard Humphrey TOLL born 1842. He Married Sarah Jane NORTHEY in 1867 and Died in 1926 in Suffolk, England.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Kind Regards,

Ken

Do not know this Tolle, however, there is a Tolle website posted by Thoren Tolle Meyers, who has done a one name study of her ancestral name:

http://members.tripod.com/~ThorenTM/

No one knows more about the Tolle lines than does Thoren. She has been of immensely generous help to me and countless other searchers for Tolle family history. My family spells the name with only one T and she was the first to recognize this and connect me to my family. Since my mother, Janet Tole of Liberty, Kansas, died when I was six, I had very little data...however, Thoren connected me to first cousins I did not know existed.

Susanne, daughter of Janet, daughter of Wm Wesley Tole, son of James Henry Tole, son of Winslow Parker Tolle, son of Jonathon 2, son of Jonathan 1, son of Roger, son of Tobias, son of the Immigrant Roger Tolle, St. Mary's County, Maryland, 1663.

Best wishes as you hunt forbearers,
Susanne

I am looking for any information on my great-great grandparents, John & Sarah Toll Smith. They married in County Armagh about 1854, in Killylea or Killyman (it's hard to read the abstract) then emigrated to Scotland (Dalry in Ayrshire). I've learned from John's death record the his father's name was Michael. They may have had children in Ireland, possibly a son born before 1855. I know they were in Scotland by 1856. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff,

I actually left Maude's information out on purpose as I figured you probably had her information! ;-)

Hmm, no one had ever mentioned Lottie's given name being Charlotte. Considering Lottie moved away from here (Graham County) before my father-in-law was born might account for it. My husband remembers her graveside services as it was the first he ever attended (it was the month before he turned 5).

Thank you for the information on John GRABNER, I didn't have anything for him.

Does Maude's daughter remember anything about Lottie & Neal's children? I know that Nellie married Wendell H. KRULL and they never had children. Once the son, Willard Chester, left home, I haven't been able to find him on a census or any other information except his death date (from California Death Records). Some of the TOLL cousins remembers Nellie, Wendell & Willard visiting Harry & Mattie and that everyone called Wendell "the Professor" rather than his first name.

I'd love to exchange info - if you want to contact me privately, my e-mail can be found by clicking on my name by the word Author above.

Jackie

I'm not researching the TOLL's, but have a collateral connection (I'm researching the GODDARD/GODARD family Richard's daughter Lottie married into) and live in the area of Kansas in which Richard and Rachel came in 1885 (per Lottie's obituary). According to the stone for Richard, Rachel and son John, Richard's birthdate was 5 April 1850. The next time I get down that way, I'd be happy to photographi it for you.
Jackie

This is very helpful.

As I understand it, Lottie's actual first name is "Charlotte" and Lottie was a nickname, according to her neice who is still living.

The other daughter not included in your listing is Maude Pearl Toll (b. February 14, 1892) in Moreland, Graham County, Kansas; and died January 28, 1994 in Duluth, Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA. She was married November 18, 1914 to John F. Grabner. John was born November 05, 1881 in Cloud, Kansas, USA and died March 28, 1966 in Denver, Arapaho County, Colorado, USA. They had one daughter who is still living. Please let me know if you need other info on this line.

thanks,
Jeff

Hi Ken & Marlene -

Thanks for all of your info regarding Richard Nicholas Toll and family. He is the gggrandfather of my wife. I originally thought he was from Wales. But, that must of have been incorrect information, based on what you have previously posted.

My mother-in-law has the original book that was written by Maude Pearl (Toll) Grabner (Richard's daughter) that you have referred to in your last message. I am going to scan that book soon (hopefully) and will have it electronically to share with any of you who want to see what it contains.

Just contact me off-line if you are interested in any of that info (jhannah@nthdegree.com).

thanks,
Jeff

Hi Janet - I realize that your posting is several years old. But, I just found it!! Hopefully this will be helpful.

Richard Toll is my wife's gggrandfather. Here is what we have on him and his wife Richard. I actually knew his daughter Maude Pearl Toll Grabner who died in 1994, just a few days short of her 102nd birthday!!

Richard Toll, born 5 April 1850 in Whales, died September 03, 1898 in Salina, Saline County, Kansas, USA; buried at Anderson Cemetery, Mooreland, Graham County, Kansas, USA; He married Rachel White on August 25, 1878;

Rachel White, born April 09, 1860 in Lona Coming, Lacona County, Maryland, USA; died July 20, 1933 in Salina, Saline County, Kansas, USA; buried at Anderson Cemetery, Mooreland, Graham County, Kansas, USA;

Richard and Rachel had six children. I don't know all of their names. But, their fifth child was Maude Pearl Toll, my wife's ggrandmother.

I don't have any info further back on this line. But, I would like to get other info on your Toll line.

Thanks very much,
Jeff Hannah
Lawrenceville, Georgia

I'm trying to find info on my great-grandma, Alice Anne Toll (spelling might not be perfect!) she married Thomas Mayes and had Kathleen and Robert Mayes. Robert was born about 1918 in Glasgow, but they lived in England later on. This is ALL the info I have and would love more info! My aunt says that Alice took her to Ireland, Scotland, and England to visit distant relatives, but she can't recall who or where.

any info would be very very appreciated, as no one alive today seems to know about my great grandma and my family roots!
