Barnard Tolland (my great great grandfather) was a linen weaver, born in Ireland and married Isabella Morris who was born in Fife. They had 6 children. (According to the 1841 census of Dunfermline Grieve Street, they would have both been around 40 at the time of the census). They lived North Side, Grieve Street, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland at the time.
Barnard died in 1845 at the age of 57 of a cold.
Isabella died age 48 on 20 August, 1846
James born around 1821
Daniel born around 1826married Janet Fotheringham on 15 May 1854. Daniel was a Linen-demask weaver. After their marriage they lived at Pittencrieff Street.
Isabella born 1828 died 9 April, 1829 aged 1 year old and buried 12 April, 1829. She died of measles and was buried in old burial ground.
Isabella born 1831 died age 17 on August, 30 1846 of fever and was buried 1 September, 1846.
Charlotte born 5 April, 1834 married Charles Weeding at Oatlands Tasmania on 20 October, 1859 Bernard born 8 October, 1837 died age 10 on September 5, 1846 of fever.
George (my great grandfather) born 4 June, 1840 married Sarah Dillon.
Isabella born 28 November, 1855 died 9 February, 1857

I have a letter dated 24th April 1845 from Ballymcramercy to James Toland coagh sadler to William Toland in Old Arboe County Tyrone. The client's great-great grandfather Bernard Toland was born in Ireland ca. 1801 (1841 Census, Scotland). He was probably the brother of William Toland of Old Arbo co. Tyrone. The Toland family were catholic. In discussion with our client we decided to check the Valuation Office revision lists to trace William Toland's continued residence in the area. Research was quite successful. We clearly identified the family of William Toland.
Research, using the Valuation Office revision lists for county Tyrone, civil parish of Arboe. The revision lists are the manuscript copies of Griffith's Valuation, first published for county Tyrone in 1851. Evidence of two landholdings in the name of William Toland in the index to Griffith's Valuation.

To clarify, William Toland had a joint holding in Killycanavan Lr. With John Hagan (Roe) and Thomas and Sarah McGuckin from 1851 to 1862, when they surrendered the land to the immediate lessor, Robert J. Alexander. A Daniel Toland also held 8 acres, 1 Rood and 30 perches with an annual valuation of 6 pounds and 5 shillings, of the same Mr. Alexander in Killycanavan Lr.. Significantly, in 1881 Daniel Toland's holding was transferred to William John Toland, who held the plot until 1901 when it was transferred to Patrick Devlin More.
William John Toland took on the land in the townlands of Killycanavan Lr. And Sessia in 1881, a strong indication that Daniel and William [Sr.] and William John Toland were all closely related. We next examined the catholic parish registers of Arboe between 1827 and 1864 to see if we could determine the exact nature of the relationship.
Baptisms:
William J., a son, of William Toland and Catherine (nee Campbele), was baptised on 28 Feb. 1829.
Catherine, a daughter, of William Toland and Catherine (nee Campbele), was baptised on 26 June 1835.
Given the rarity of the name Toland in Ireland, this William J. Toland born in 1829 is almost certainly the same William John Toland registered as occupier in the Valuation Office revision lists for Killycanavan Lr. and Sessia in 1881. It is therefore likely that William Sr. married to Catherine Campbele is the one who sent the letter of April 1845 to your great-great grandfather Bernard Toland.
Marriages:
We found no evidence of the marriage of William Toland and Catherine Campbele, their union may have occured before 1827, the date at which these records begin. We did however note a marriage of a Patrick Toland to Elizabeth Fullam on 23 Jany. 1849 witnessed by a William Toland. It is possible though not conclusive that this is the same William Toland born in 1829 and that William and Patrick were closely related. However the records don't indicate whether they may have been brothers or cousins.
We also found several other entries in the parish register relating to a Tolan family. They may be unrelated but there are a number of coincidences that make this family quite interesting.
Baptisms:
Hugh Tolan, a son, of William Tolan and Susan Campbele, was baptised on 28th Aug. 1842
Hugh Tolan a son, of William Tolan and Maria Campbele, was baptised on 8th July 1846
I cannot explain this coincidence, especially since William Toland was also married to a Campbele, although the name Campbele/Campbell seems to be very common in the area.
Marriages:
On 17 Feb. 1850 a Joanna Tolan married William Conway. A witness at the marriage was a William Tolan. It is possibly that this was William Tolan, father of either of the Hugh Tolans, again this may make him a brother of Joanna Tolan or possibly a cousin.
In conclusion, we found evidence of two Toland family in the parish registers, William and Catherine (Campbele) Toland and their children William J[ohn] and Catherine; secondly Patrick Toland who married Elizabeth Fullam. These may be two families or members of the same one over two generations. Its also possible that the Tolan family is related, and that the name Tolan is simply another variation of Toland.
