I know the Toland/Tolland name was not common to Ireland so I would say any there would be related in some way. I know there was William Toland in Ireland from letters written to the family in Scotland. Most of the family left Scotland and came to Australia but John Tolland went to Leeds England. You haven't said anything about you ancestors to know if they are connected.

Sorry its taken me a while to reply, my grandfather's family comes from Belfast. I believe there are still Tolland's and Toland's in Northern Ireland and in County Donegal. I also think some of my ancestors went to Scotland, Glasgow area, where some still are and others went on to either America or Australia - Perth and/or Darwin I think. Hope that helps.

Mary and George were married at St. Michale's Catholic Church Campbell Town on 24 August 1869 Witnesses were Michael and Bridgett Markkey. Mary's parents were Patrick and Mary and I know she had brothers John Patrick and Michael. Mary died 4 July 1875 at Campbell Town. They lived at Argyle Street Hobart when George Patrick died on 14 September 1879.

Lisa, Before I started researching the Tollands I knew George (my great grandfather) was a widower
before he married Sarah Dillon but I thought he had been married in Scotland. Amazing that I have
found all these Tollands in Tasmania and they have supplied me with this information. I know Mary Markey married George at St. Michael's Catholic Church Campbell Town on 24 August 1869. At the time of the marriage Mary's age was given as 30 years. Witnesses to the marriage were Michael and Bridgett Markey. I assume Michael was her brother and Bridgett his wife. Mary's parents were Patrick aged 45 and Mary aged 40 at the time they were assisted emigrants from Glasgow Scotland on the Flora McDonald. Also listed were their children. John aged 18 years, Mary aged 15 years, Patrick aged 11 years and Michael aged 9 years. Given the age of Mary when she married and the age she was when she emigrated I would say they arrived in Tasmania about 1854. Of course it is possible their were other children born to the parents Patrick and Mary after they arrived in Tasmania but it would be unlikely. I would be interested in hearing from you. Janet

Thanks for your replies Janet. But now I am confused.
I'm not sure if I have the right Mary Markey now.
Mary's older brother was Barnard and she had a younger sister Catherine who married John Dalton in 1866 (these two are my great great grandparents. I don't have her brothers as you have.....but Catherine's parents were Patrick and Bridget Markey....I know I found another Patrick Markey in the
Tasmanian records but the dates were not even close.
I also found a record for a Patrick, Bridget, Barnard, Mary and Catherine Markey sailing in on the "Panama" in 1853.
Maybe I have the wrong Mary. Please share any thoughts or other info you have. I would appreciate it.
I live in Coffs Harbour but are originally from Hamilton, New Zealand where the Daltons immigrated to abt 1876.

Interesting to me after reading your e-mail is that I lived in Park Ridge Il from 1965 to 1983. My exhusband is still there. Do you know if your painting has increased in value?

Hi Rita,
The painting I saw was being auctioned on ebay. I did not win the bid so I don't know what happened to it. From your email, it wasn't done by your relative.
My father's family grew up in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. His name was Leo Tolland, and his father's name was also Leo. His mother's name was Catherine Hickey Tolland. The Tolland's worked in the paper mill there. My grandfather moved there from Appleton, Wisconsin. He was thrown out of a paper mill there for trying to start a union. He came from a large family. Any of this ring a bell? We could be related.
Sincerely,
Trish

Hi Kathy!
My father Leo, was the oldest of four boys. He married Helen Moore and they had seven children, me being one of them. My father passed away in 1978. He was 53, the same age that his father was when he passed away. My mom lives in Randolph, Mass. Next came Joe who married Grace. Joe also passed away around the same age. I think Grace does live in Foxborough. They had a daughter, Valerie, who was sick and passed away. I think she was in her early twenties. They have four other children, one of whom is Joe. Next is John, who was married to Phyliss. Phyliss just passed away a few months ago. (This email is getting kind of sad). John lives in Medford, or maybe Medfield. They have four children. The youngest son, Richard, is married to Charlotte and they live in Connecticut and they have three children.
You must have known Father Cy! Every time I go on ebay (the auction website) I search for "Tolland" to see if anything comes up, which is how I saw the Tolland painting that was mentioned in my first email, and I just won a seafood cookbook from the parish that Father Cy was at. The cookbook was printed in 1978, and it's dedicated to Father Cy. In it is a drawing of him smoking a cigar and holding a fish.
I'm going to show this email to my mom and she can tell me exactly who you are. I'll write back.
Trish

I just talked to one of my sisters who corrected me on my family history. It was my great grandfather who left Appleton, Wisconsin, not my grandfather. My great grandfather was kicked out of Scotland and came to America with his wife and I think they had nine or ten children. They settled in Appleton, where he was also kicked out of. The story goes that he walked from there to Maine and under an assumed name got a job at a paper mill. He was eventually recognized but I don't think he was kicked out of Maine. He ended up in Hyde Park where he sent for his wife and children. She came with all the children. Their youngest son, who was born in Appleton, was my grandfather.
Sorry if I confused you at all. I'll write back.
Trish

Hi Trish,
Every time I get more information on the Tolland family history I get confused but at least now I have the story of your great grandfather straight. My husband, Mark, is the son of Bill Tolland who is Cyril Tolland's son. They, too, lived in Hyde Park and both worked in the paper mill. I grew up a few blocks away from the paper mill. I never met Father Cy but I heard a lot about him from Mark's family. I also heard about him from a woman in Norton where we live who went to church at St. Mary's in Dedham when he was a priest there. I understand he passed away, not too long ago either.
Bill Tolland was one of five children. The oldest was Ed, then Mary, Barbara, Pat and Bill. All but Ed are still alive. Bill lives in Florida with Mae, Mary lives in Plainville with Pat and Pat's daughter Noreen, Barbara lives in Foxborough. Bill had seven children, Michael, Mark, Sheila, Eric, Sean, Tracy and Keith. Barbara had two children, Ricky and Patty. Pat had three children, Noreen, Marty and Patrick. Bill's mother was Nora Tolland. She is the only Tolland I knew from that generation of Tollands. I liked her very much.
I know that a long time ago there was a Tolland reunion. I think it was in Medford. We could not go because Kevin, our son, was just a baby and Mark was away. However, because I teach in Foxborough, I have gotten to know Ginny and Joe Tolland. Both of their boys went to the same elementary school where I taught.
To make this long story short. I am only a Tolland by marriage but I like to find out about the family history for Rita and Kevin to pass on. I would love for you to write back.
Kathy

Tolland family

I'm searching for parents and siblings of my ggggrandfather Jonathan Tolland b. NC about 1797 m. Ann Brown NC and Jacob Toland b.SC about 1791 m. Rhoda Toland. They are all listed in the Humphreys County TN 1850 census. Jonathan came from Somersetshire England, settled first in ILL. then came to TN. Jonathan Tolland and Jacob Toland are both in the 1840 census. Jonathan Tolland is my ancestor and his son Isaac dropped one T in the family name. I don't know if Jonathan and Jacob are brother or not. Any info on these two and their families would be very much appreciated. I have a lot of info on Jonathan's descendents and some on Jacob's and will share with any relatives out there. Thanks, Jessie Parnell Hopwood
e-mail Hoppy31930@aol.com

Both my grandmother and my aunt painted. My grandmother is Theresa (O'Brien) Tolland and my aunt who has passed away is Tracey Tolland, but I'm not sure if this painting is by either of them because they are from Hyde Prak, Massachusetts. It's a possibility though. Chances are the artist is related to my family. I hope I helped a little

Rita Tolland

The painting as far as I know could not be one by my aunt Tracy because the only one anyone knows she painted is hanging on e wall in my bedroom.

Rita Tolland

Hi Trish,
This is Kathy, Rita's mom. She is one of the Hyde Park Tollands, at least her father is. Mark Tolland is Bill Tolland's son, Cyril Tolland's grandson. I have heard the story of your grandfather being kicked out of the papermill for trying to start a union. Is their also a story that your grandfather was one of the Tolland's who were kicked out of Scotland? The rumor is that it was also for trying to start a union at the paper mill there but I'm not sure.
Rita went to Scotland last summer and tried to research the Tollands but could not find evidence of a family
tartan. She did find some Tolland's listed on an employee record at a paper mill in Glasgow.
I know that there is a Joe Tolland in Foxborough. I thought his father was either Leo or Joe. His mother is Grace Tolland who I think lives in Foxborough as well.
Sincerely,
Kathy Tolland
