Tollefsen (Valerie?)/Elias Johannessen marriage

My great-grandmother Mathilde Johanna Johannessen married Ingvard Oscar Anderssen in 1892 (Brooklyn NY). Their marriage certificate shows Mathilde's parents as
Elias Johannessen and ....(?)lorie Tollefsen, Sandakedal Kragero Norway. I guesstimate that they were born around 1852 or so and married around 1872 or so.

Anyone familiar with this line?

It would be helpful if you could offer more detailed information (ie: birth year, death year, name of spouse, children, etc.).

In a couple of Sannes Township, Yellow Medicine County censuses, there is a Sven Olai Tollefson, born about 1874 in Minnesota (rather than Norway). His parents were Tollef and Anne S. Tollefson.

Good luck!

I'm trying to find information on Jacob Bernard Tollefsen (b.1846 Norway to Tollef Jacobsen and Sarah Helene UNKNOWN) and Thomine Lange Tollefsen (b.1845 Norway, Imm. 1872, d.1911 NYC). I'd love to connect with descendants out there.

Re: Lisbot TOLLEFSON - Norway/Minnesota

Biri is the name of a district in Oppland, Norway. Biridahl or Biridahlen would be what they would call Biri valley.

The parish records for Biri are available for your research online.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

"Lisbot" does not sound like a male given name in Norway. You should probably expect that to have been rather oddly Americanized from whatever his original name was.

I have a missing relative named Olaug Halvorsdatter Stensrd who came from Gol Hallingdal in the Spring of 1853. The family entered at Quebec. They were in Iowa before moving to MN. Olaug disappeared between Quebec and Mn..perhaps she married? If you have a Tollefson married to an unknown Halvorsdatter, and any of this info fits please reply. Mange takk

Ms. Ahern -- Yes, I do check this, and I would love a copy of the photo of the Tollefson gravestones!

Ada was my Great-Great-Grand Uncle William Palmer's daughter -- she died at the age of 23, leaving her husband and three very small children, Flossie, Maude and Wesley.
Tollef Tollefson Bio

Langdon ND 1888-1988 Centennial Book
Tollef Tollefson Bio - pg 461

In 1861 Tollef Tollefson Golberg arrived fra Gol, Norway where he was born to Tollef and Kristi Hoftorn Tollefson. He worked near the Iowa-Minnesota border but after coming to Dakota Territory, he did not use the name Golberg. In 1868 in Decroah, Iowa Tollef married Kari Ludderud, who was also fra Gol and had immigrated in 1866. Tollef and Kari farmed near harmony, MN until 1882. Others moving included Tollef's widowed mother; three sisters - Anne Christianson, Ingeborg Anderson and Barbro Quale - and their families; Ole H. Olson, who lived with them from age 6 yrs and Kari's mother, Guri Ludderud and sister, Liv. They came by train to Grafton which was as far as the train went.

It was spring and a sod house was built, but by fall a frame house was ready and the sod house was used for livestock. Tollef had taken a tree claim and soon a beautiful large grove was growing on the prairies. A school was built on the farm so now their children could receive an education and Dovre Lutheran Church was organized.

Later the family became Charter members of North Dovre Lutheran, a mile south of the farm. Tollef and Kari now had six children: Gurine, Theodor, Bertha, Elle, Tom and Carl. In 1894 diptheria epidemic reached the pioneer community and only Gurine and Theodor were left. Their youngest daughter Ella was born that fall and helped the family through a very rough time. In 1905 the big house was built and is still in use today. Kari died in 1912 and Tollef in 1926. They are buried at North dovre with the four children. In 1982 descendants of Tollef and Kari gathered on the farm. --recorded 4/85

There is no photograph.

**NOTE: I am not related to this family. I do not live in ND. I do own the Langdon Centennial Book.

You are looking for relatives in Norway?
Did the family emigrate to somewhere else? If they did, have you determined what area they settled in and where relatives might best be looked for?

I see a Henning A. Kirkvold in Minnesota in 1910 - but his wife was born in the US. From your listing I would expect his wife to be Norway born. Perhaps you could clarify where you are looking for relatives.

You don't give good dates for trying to establish this lineage. Was Arthur born about 1911? Perhaps he was really Roland Arthur? There was a Roland A. born to Arthur J. b abt. 1870 and Bertha Tollefson in Tacoma.

It has been a long time since you posted. Perhaps you have discovered more info by now.

If Arthur J. is yours then his father is probably Paul/Poul Tollefsen Rye, son of Tollev Olsen Hulebak and Anne Henrichsdtr. Poul was born 8 March 1824 in Nes, Buskerud, Norway.

I don't know if you still check this message board, but I recently visited some Grantsburg cemeteries, and I took pictures of Thomas O. Tollefson's and Ada Maud Palmer-Tollefson's gravestones. Hers is particularly impressive BTW. If you're interested and still check this, let me know. Thomas was my great-great grand-uncle.

Here are the photos I took on Saturday, July 22, 2006. These tombstones are all at the Riverside Cemetery in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. I'm not sure about any other Tollefsons in Wisconsin (except for my great aunt, who has her married name now). My grandfather, Floyd Tollefson, only had daughters. He was Henry Tollefson's son. Henry Tollefson was Thomas Tollefson's brother. Grandpa Floyd didn't pass on much information to his daughters about his family. It seems to be a fairly common name, though. Hope these pictures are helpful!

Jana

I am a great-grandson to Tollef Tollefson and Anne Stephens. Amanda is my grandmother. Have you found any Norway information on Tollef? Although there is plenty of info on his American life, his Kongsberg family records seem to be a mystery.

Ron
