Tompkins DNA Testing Will Help ALL of US

We need more male Tompkins participants in the Tompkins DNA project. With each participant, chances of hooking up your lineage to the correct colonial ancestor and ancestors across the pond increase, esp. when you share your herediatary society acceptable lineage, meaning, you have documentary proof to hook up each generation to the next.

If even only half of the Tompkins on this message board would get tested (or get your male counterpart, i.e., father, uncle, brother, or son to do so for you), maybe we could get some answers to the many queries.

The various DNA testing companies are constantly running specials. I have my Tompkins results posted on ysearch, ancestry.com, and at the Tompkins DNA project on worldfamilies.com.

Please get tested and share your results so we can ALL benefit from our ardous research into our Tompkins lineage.

Thank you!

Family history has it H B Sr. was robbed and murdered (with the body being set on fire and found in a ditch)somewhere between Tift County and his home is Southern Worth County.
Cathy, can't remember if we've corresponded before or not. The Thompkins/Tompkins of Greene & Jersey Co, IL hail from Hardin Co, KY. As best as I've been able to determine John is the eldest of 8 probable siblings/cousins, 3 boys and 5 girls; 5 of them crossed the Oregon Trail. I just found two of the sisters this week, so am researching my way down their lines before I upload an update. It's taken me about 5 years to research this group, and I've only been able to narrow it down to a county instead of an entire state. I likely need access to Hardin Co area wills to get any further back (and pray the will wasn't in VA - too many Tompkins).

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=pgoldenman

Marissa

Hi Susan. I don't think we're related but . . . . I have TOMPKINS in Curry County, Oregon by was of California, Michigan, New York. Willis Eugene TOMPKINS married Edna M. HUNTLEY in Gold Beach, Curry Co, OR on 30 Oct 1892. They had children: Mattie Alvira Fay, Clyde Willis, Lloyd J. Cyril D., and Dora.
I'm still trying to prove the lineage and hopefully go further back into the TOMPKINS heritage in New England. Have you visited the TOMPKINS DNA Project? Do any of your TOMPKINS male relatives wish to have their DNA tested? Yes or no, please visit
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/tompkins/
and click on the [Discussion] at the top of the screen to view all the TOMPKINS DNA lineage.
Good luck, Raymond

Was your grandfather, Leland Tompkins? Did your father Darrell have a twin sister Darlene? If you answer yes to these, then your father Darrell who I have met is my cousin. His grandfather John Gardner Tompkins was also my great grandfather. I have a lot of information on the family of Tompkins. Will share information.
Cathy Tompkins Clark

Hi, there is a message on this site concerning the Clan of Tompkins, you can search the volumes of the Tompkins family tree. I know that not all the data is correct, but you may get lucky and find a link to what you are looking for. Of course you then have to try and validate the data!
I do know that the children of those you are looking for are listed in the book

Linda

Re: Walter DeWitt Tompkins, Dutchess Co., NY

I have in my branch of Vails a marriage between Julia A. Vail and William A. Tompkins. I believe William was living in Hyde Park, Dutchess Co. New York at the time of the marriage sometime shortly after the 1870 census. Hyde Park is very close to Pleasant Valley. The Valentine middle name of one of the children of your Walter caught my eye as my branch of Vails is linked to the Valentine/Valyntin family very early on. Nehemiah Veal/Vail dob 1719 married a Mary Archer whose mother I believe was Elizabeth Valyntin. Nehemiah, Mary, and Elizabeth all were in Westchester Co. New York, but Nehemiah and Mary raised their family in Dutchess Co. They had children: Daniel, John, Abigail, Freelove, and Elihu. Elihu died a young man but the others all raised families in Dutchess with the exception of Abigail who with her husband Daniel Lawrence went to Canada after the Revolution. Nehemiah was said to have gone to Canada sometime after 1790 with his second wife unknown Deane. This info is mostly from the Alfred Vail Index Reference available to me through Heritage Quest. Nehemiah's parents and siblings are unknown to me although I suspect he may be the son of Arthur Vail.

I believe I have found the last name she had and that was Fonseca. She married Arthur Wellington Fonseca, born October 8, 1879, Centerville, Alameda, California. She is listed on the 1900 census with his family and a baby name Wilheminia or something, but I believe it is Hattie Adrienne Reilley. I found her birth certificate listed in the San Francisco morning call with the name of Fonseca as the father, but I do think that it is James Joseph Reilley that is the father. They misspell Reilley in the census. Just look for Arthur and look at the bottom. Also, in the 1930 census I find the two. Hattie is Arthurs mothers name?
In 1900 they were in San Jose and by 1918 they were in Daly City and in 1930.
I think they both must have passed between 1930 and 1940. I can't find them. Please respond if you find anything.
Kathy
Thanks Scott, but I have Walter and Abbie located on the census through 1930. I know that Abbie died sometime between 1930 and 1945, as she is mentioned as deceased in her brother's obituary in 1945. I also have Walter Valentine through the 1930 census.

Percy was living with his maternal grandparents in Maine on the 1910 census, and I have been unable to locate him yet after that.

I only have Elizabeth through 1910, I assume she married between 1910-1920. I have Kathleen living with her parents in 1920, and I assume she married between 1920-1930. I have no idea who either of them married.

I only have Everett through 1910, again I haven't been able to locate him after that yet.

Hi,

Not sure about their death dates but just wanted to share some census info:

1900 Federal Census, Dutchess Co., NY (ED 41, Stanford, Jun 19, 1900, Sheet 12B) lists Walter D. Tompkins as a 32 year old farm laborer born June 1868 living in rented home in Stanford with wife of 8 years Abby age 26 born July 1873 (she was born in Canada, her parents Maine, had total of 2 children, both still alive) 4 year old son Persevil born Jan 1896 and 1 year old daughter Elizabeth L. born Jan 1899. Both children born in New York.

1910 Federal Census, Dutchess Co., NY (ED 89, Washington Township, part of Dist 2, Apr 29, 1910, Sheet 7A) lists Walter D. Tompkins as a 41 year old farm manager living in rented farm in Washington Township with wife of 18 years Abbie N. (Housewife, she was born in Canada, came to US in 1892, her parents Maine, had total of 5 children, all still alive as of 1910 census) 11 year old daughter Beth (census indicates she was born in Maine (school), 8 year old son Everette (school), 6 year old son Valentine (school) and 2 year old daughter Kathleen M. Oldest son Persevil was not recorded, could be that he died before the 1910 census was recorded.

Hope this is new info for you,

Regards,
Scott T.
