Re: An American Toms and Brompton (Somerset)

According to a website about Exmoor National Park, "John Toms, a glass stainer, was born in the village [ie Brompton Ralph] between 1813 and 1815, and several examples of his work can-be seen in nearby churches".
From the censuses, I have ascertained that John and Sarah Toms had a son who married and had children - his name was also John Toms, born 1840 at Wellington, Somerset. He was a Professor of Music, and married Delia Kelway in 1862 at Langport, Somerset. They had four sons, Edward John Kelway born 1863; William James Kelway 1865; John Robert Kelway 1868; and Arthur Cecil Kelway 1870 - all born at Wellington.
Also check out a Genforum message for John Toms of Wellington, which advises that Edward J K Toms married and had children before he died in 1890, and that his son William Rathbone Toms emigrated to the US. He could be the man you are interested in.
Maybe someone with access to US census records can help find his location in the US.
My interest in this family arises from John and Sarah's daughter Cecil Toms who was born 1848 married my first cousin twice removed, Charles Gill, in 1871 at Wellington, Somerset.

Jean
TOMS was born Sept. 12, 1816, at West Bloomfield, Ontario Co., N. Y.; here he remained until June, 1833, when he moved to Troy, Oakland Co., Mich. Sept. 29, 1841, he was married and removed to Kentucky and engaged himself in teaching school, following this occupation until 1844, when he returned to Michigan and occupied himself during summers in farming, and teaching winters. In 1846, he removed to Oxford, Oakland Co., and there established himself in the general merchandise business, conducting it until 1856, when he was elected Register of Deeds of Oakland Co., and moved to Pontiac; he held this office two years, and then spent two years in settling up his private affairs, and, in 1860, was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue, holding this office until 1865, when he removed to La Crosse and engaged in the wholesale and retail crockery and glassware business, following the same up to the present time.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

My line from Joseph Toms (b. Guernsey) is:Joseph, Richard Rowland Toms b.1858 Lyme, William Joseph Toms b. 15 July 1882 Reading, Vera Leah Toms b.25 Jan 1911 Reading, Me.
I have some info from Janine Andrea Owen who is, like you, also descended from John William Toms. Charles Toms b. Guernsey, Joseph's brother, settled in Devonport. I have quite a lot of info about them also. Charles was a shipwright. He died 19 May 1913, Devonport. One of his children, Joseph Henry, married his cousin, from Lyme Regis, Sarah Elizabeth Rowland Mills, granddaughter of Sarah Rowland and her 2nd husband, Henry Wills, after her 1st husband died in 1832 (Haslar Hospital).
Let me know if you would like to know more.
jsoutar

His parents were Joseph Toms b.1802 and Sarah Rowland who married in Guernsey on 14th Oct 1827. Unfortunately Joseph died in 1832 in Haslar Hospital. Marriage lines say they were "of Lyme". He was a sailor,as was his father, also a Joseph.
Perhaps we could exchange info.

Hi

I don't know if there is a connection. Certainly a branch went to New Zealand (as a lot of people from Cornwall did around the same time period). Toms was quite a common name in Cornwall and as the cornish records online are quite good, it can be a bit confusing as to who is who!

Nora,

I'm just working through a Toms chart sent to me by another person to see if I can correct the errors in it (there are several!). The is a Jane Toms born 1852 Lanteglos who may be the same one in whom you are interested. Her parents are given (possibly mistakenly) as Francis L. Toms & Elizabeth Prout. Her siblings are given as Mary Ann (1850), Elizabeth Prout (1850), John (1854), Kate (1859), Ann (1859), Grace (c.1861), Annie (c.1864) and Richard (1869), all of Lanteglos. Please note that I have not yet verified any of these details at this stage.

However, if these details seem to connect with your Jane, please get in touch with me.

Edward

Nora,

I've a feeling that you may be in NZ; the elderly lady who contacted me thought that my Toms family of Cornwall may have been connected to hers -- but it is not (as far as we know). She lives in Australia, and her ancestor John first went to NZ before moving to NSW.
Before contacting you I had only got as far as printing off the UK census entries for 1871, 1881 and 1891, and the 1913 shipping record for FRancis & Ethel Toms from England to Canada.
Rather than duplicate what you have done yourself, I am now attaching the typed chart which she sent to me initially. No doubt you will be able to correct and add to this, and we would be most grateful.
It occurs to me that you may wish to correspond with her yourself (particularly as it seems that you may be related), and if so I would ask her for permission to give you her address (she does not have a computer). I'd need to cobtact you off-site to do this. What would you like?
Edward

Arthur Mee's book "Somerset" (1941) mentions a Mr Toms (no personal name) who went from America to his grandfather's village of Brompton Ralph in Somerset (England) to search for family records. He gave money for the restoration of the anscient church screen. Does anyone know who this person was (presumably first half of the 20th century)?
Edward.

Can anyone please help with 2 missing parts of my family tree puzzle. The first part is finding the parents of Emily Jane Toms (nee Pitman) b. 1847 in Chaldon Herring, Dorset - she married Thomas Toms in Sept 1868 in Wareham and they had 9 children.

The second part is trying to find information for the husband of one of the children - Charlotte Emily Toms. All I know is she married William Henry Evans and they had 1 child, a daughter b. 1910.

Any help anyone can give would be greatfully received
