I've finally come up against the same wall as you.
Maybe we should come up with a shortlist of people and BMDs that we want to check, and then I'll see about making a special trip to Hereford record office. It'll need forward planning though because once you start looking at parish records, you keep wanting to go further and further back.
"Oh, so those are his parents."
"That's when they got married, and they're both from this parish."
"Let's find their baptism entries."
"Ah, so those are the parents..."
...and so on, and so on. :)
I was recently looking thru some geneaology papers given to me by one of my Aunty's in Ka'a'awa. A handwritten family tree was included. Ah Kui Tong Hong is on the family tree. I believe he was married to Grace Kaui Aweau. According to this tree she is the daughter of Nakuilauhulu and Kahooio Aweau. Nakui is the brother of my GGG grandmother Margaret Kamaha Aweau Padeken.

Tong Hong and Kaui had 8 children. Sorry that's all I have the pages of the tree are incomplete. Contact me if you would lkie any more info on the Aweau family.

Re: John Tong (Herefordshire@1833)

I have just received my husbands great grandmothers Birth Certificate from England and her parents were John Tong and Sarah Ann Rowe. I have been unable to find her in any census except the Wales 1901 when she is married with children. Her name is Ada Ann Tong she married John Francis and they had the following children,
1) Percy Cecil b 1895 in Wales
2) John Herbert b 1898 in Wales
3) Dora Martha b 1900 in Wales
4) Sidney Edwin b 1903 in Wales

Ada's husband John died in 1904 in Wales and she remarried a Frank Catlin. I have not been able to find where they married but sometime around 1913 Ada moved to Canada. She was married to Frank in 1917 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada as Percy has Frank listed as his father in his War papers. Percy is also going by the last name of Catlin but when he marries he goes by last name Francis.

Percy died in North Battleford in 1933. Apparently John Herbert did not come to Canada with the rest of his family. Dora died in 1966 in British Columbia, Canada and Sidney died in 1973 in Armstrong, British Columbia.

Ada died in 1949 in British Columbia.

My husbands grandfather was Percy.
here's hoping we have some kind of a connection......
You may have the following information but will send what I have. My Tongs are from Ohio also, but I do not think they are in the same linage as yours.

Leander Ransom Tong born July 1842 in Wyandot County, Ohio.
He died sometime between 1920 and 1930. He was the son of George Washington Tong. He was married to Catherine "Kate" Beck. Lenader served in the Civil War. He enlisted November 9, 1861. He was a private in Co. F 57th Infantry. He was discharged on Noveber 11, 1864. This information was taken from the 1890 Sepcial Schedule of the Census.
This is just a guess, but it looks to me as if someone had difficulty reading some handwriting, and read Laurah (variant spelling of Laura) as Sausah. Capital letters can be particularly difficult (for example, in one early census, the transcriber making the index thought a lot of Ls were Ts -- I could understand why when I looked at the census film, but it sure made my Lemasters hard to find!).

Re: Friendship Tongue

Most of my info on the early Tongue families comes from the two editions of the books by Herald Stout. He is fairly careful about stating what he thinks he knows, and what are his educated guesses. Friendship had a posthumous son Friendship, it seems. Friendship Jr. is given as "possibly the father of William." William is the "most likely father of John." William and all the rest are most likely the children of John (although I have also seen it suggested that the father's name is really a James, at present I think John is more likely, given tax records and so on).

Thanks so much for the reference to the IGI. The last time I tried it for Tongues, either the relevant registers had not yet been transcribed, or I just totally missed them somehow....

I have long felt that Friendship's line and the line of the first Thomas Tongue are closely connected, but have no proof. Stein's history of Calvert County names the Thomas who was transported in 1650 as a son of Friendship, but this seems unlikely to me. There is a Thomas Tongue who has a lot of children baptized in the same church as Henry's children back in London, I see in the IGI, who seems to be a bit older. But even so, there is a gap between the early Thomas Tongues and the ones in your line.

I agree with you that the Thomas who married Elizabeth Roberts was most likely the son of James, who was the son of another Thomas Tongue. The probate record is very hard to interpret---too many Thomases, at the very least. I more or less gave up on figuring out if or how I was cousins with descendants of Thomas & Elizabeth (my ancestor is Eleanor Tongue who married Daniel Rankin), although it does seem very likely to me still that all are connected somehow or other.

--Anne

The family moved to Georgetown when he was a child where he lived for most of his life.
From Oct. 14, 1952, to Dec. 29, 1953, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Dick met Ester Eaton at Gerorgetown School, married her, and helped raise her three children.
Dick became a Christian in his late thirties and spent many hours studing the Bible, particulary Romans, and he and Ester led a local Bible study group for many years until they moved to Yerington, Nev.
Hello, My is name Doxie Colene Cruz, My Grandmother's Name is Viola Jenna Tong(ue). She was born August 31,1909 Marion, Grant County-Indiana. Her father's name is Blaine Harrison Tong born abt 1888 and died abt 1946. My grandmother has Blaine's father documented as William H. Tong who marries Sarah Jane (last unknown).
This William I believe middle name to be Harrison, or Harvey, as my grandmother has wrote both. However some good people trying to help me out E-mailed me that his name was William Fred Tong, and he married Jane Sarah Roush. I don't feel as though that is correct. Can't really explain why, its just a feeling. I know this is a real long shot, but I noticed you had a lot of extensive info on the Tong family. Can you help me? Please E-mail me directly at Latinajah1@AOL.COM.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE, ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED.

I am one of the gggranddaughters of Rev. H.F. Tong. My great grandmother was Laura America Tong, listed somehow as Sausah in Goodspeeds. We think it was a misreading of script writing.

My great grandmother Laura A. Tong Howard ? Pirtle Eadie died in St. Louis in 1945 at the home of her son, Grover Judson Howard, my grandfather. Grover and his siblings were all the children of Jefferson Allen Howard and the family lived in Glen Allen, Bollinger County, MO. After Allen died, Laura married 3 more times and survived each of her husbands.

Grover married Lulu May Crader of Doe Run, MO in April, 1909. Their only child, Patricia Louise is my mother. My mother gave to the Bollinger County Historical Society a quilt made by Laura and the Mayfield girls when Rev. H.F. Tong was the CFO for the Academy. It is on display I do believe.

My great great grandfather Rev. H.F. Tong also wrote a book on the history of the Baptist in Missouri.

Are you related to Rev. H.F. Tong, also? Please contact me directly at my email address as I do not always have the opportunity to look at the message boards as I often as I would like. Thanks.

History of Southeast Missouri, Goodspeed 1888 not 1880.

I am the great granddaughter of Laura A. Tong, identified as "Sausah" in the detail in Goodspeed as written by her father, Rev. H. Tong, my great great grandfather. Rev. Tong's other child was my great aunt Caroline, known as "Carrie" by the family.

Our family believes that the spelling of "Sausah" is a misreading of "Laura". No one in the family recalls Laura called by any name other than "Laura". Laura married Jefferson Allen Howard ( known to family by "Allen". ) Their son, Grover J. was my grandfather.

TONG family of Nevada County, Arkansas, circa 1880s-1920s.

Seeking more information about the Reverend Ernest W. Tong family who lived in the 1880s-1920s in the Redland community of Nevada County, Arkansas. Rev. E. W. Tong was a Methodist minister and may have been pastor of one of two Methodist churches at Redland (probably called Oak Grove and Mt. Nebo) during this early period. The Tongs appear to have been related to the Webb, Worthington, and Hughes families, as well as later possibly the Jackson and Ridling families.

The following Tong child was buried in 1902 at Shady Grove Cemetery at Redland, and may have been Rev. Tong's son:

HORACE W. TONG – born 1890, died 1902. Horace, who died at age 12, appears to be the son of Sarah S. Webb Worthington and Rev. Ernest W. Tong—-a Methodist minister at Redland in 1888-1897. Sarah died in 1923, and she is buried at nearby Liberty Cemetery. Rev. Ernest W. Tong had earlier been married to Sarah A. Hughes (born 1841 AL, died in Nov 1888), who helped organize Salem Methodist Church in 1880.

Others who may be related: John F. Tong married in 1897 to Camilla Jackson, with Rev. Ernest W. Tong performing the ceremony. Earl T. Ridling married Etta Tong about 1914 at Redland. E. D. Tong married C. V. Jackson in 1899 at Redland. In 1954 at Prescott, there was a State Trooper policeman, R. Henry Tong, which may also be from this particular Tong family line.
