TOOKE and
JOINER Families (
Mcgahee21016@aol.com)."August 18, 2004DavidI have come across some more information about the Tooke's and
Jenkins. I have Uriah
Jenkins and Charlotte Brett
TOOKE as Ann's parents. There is no doubt that Ann was a
Jenkins but investigating Charlotte further. She first married John
TOOKE Jr. in 1804. She was born 1781 in Brunswick County, Virginia. He was born 1773 in North Hampton, North Carolina. He died about 1815 in Washington County,
Georgia. They had: William L. Tooke, Jesse Brett
TOOKE, Joseph
TOOKE and John Allen Tooke.OK, here is the kicker. When John died, she married Uriah
Jenkins. So if Ann S. was a daughter, then that would have made her first husband John Allen
TOOKE, her jhalf brother. I am checking into Uriah as possibly being her Uncle because there was a Thomas and Liberty
Jenkins. Also in the 1870 Census, Liberty was 89 years old. Anyway we will figure it out.KimPS - Copies of original papers in Washington County. Tried to decypher on paper the best I could. McGahee uncovers family cemetery, Wednesday, February 12, 2003, The Sandersville Progress, by Brenda Hollingsworth, Associate EditorKim McGahee had a mystery. In researching her ancestors in the
JOINER family she knew the grave of Malachi
JOINER, her fourth grandfather, was someplace in Washington County, in an area beyond Holmes Cannery Road. She had directions, from a description written by a Rufus
JOINER, but all she
could see when she folled the directions were fields and woods. It wasn't until she talked with a landowner, that she was able to solve the mystery of the missing
JOINER Family cemetery. But, having him take her to the area was little help because the area was covered in briars, weeds and trees. Determined, Kim braved the possibility of snakes and bugs and crawled into the briars with her camera. With the zoom lens she could see a few tombstones, exciting her interest in uncovering what was there.Returning with her cousins Larry and Terry Coggins they began clearing away the brush, each day finding more and more treasure in the form of legible tombstones. Some were buried and had to be unearthed, while others were still where they had been originally placed over 100 years ago.Yes, 100 years ago. The last burial was Moses
JOINER who died in 1900. Born in 1838, he had fought in the Civil War, returning to Washington County afterwards. The earliest of the marked graves are those of Malachi and Rachel
JOINER. He was born in 1781 in North Carolina and died April 30, 1854, while Rachel was born in 1796 in South Carolina and died August 18, 1871.It was over a year ago that Kim located the cemetery and she and members of her family have been working ever since. She tells of clearing away dead trees which had fallen into the area and discovering bent and twisted wrought iron fence around a square section with apparently at least two unmarked graves inside. The gate on the fenced area says "W.E. Shurling," and a stamp at the bottom says the gate was made by the Stewart Company. She has found a grave marked William Elton and believes that Elton married a Shurling. Elton served in Company E, 32nd
Georgia Infantry, in the Civil War.Twenty-three graves have been located, plus there are a lot of significant depressions indicating other burials. Several graves are marked with slabs of wood, which amazingly are still there, although any markings are gone. There are a lot of graves for children with their markers listing their parents' names. One marker is for Jessie Lee Joyner (note the spelling is different), "son of Jessie G. and Emmeline Gregory Joyner, killed by a gin, April 11, 1869 - November 22, 1875." Kim believes he must have fallen into a cotton gin.Jessie G. (Company A, 28th
Georgia Inf. (CSA) and Emmeline have four other children in the cemetery buried near their daddy. But so far a marker for Emmeline has not turned up. One of their daughters,
Georgia, died when she was 30 years old. According to Kim, she believes
Georgia had married a man named Ivey, but that name does not appear on the tombstone. Baby Jessie C. Joiner lived less than a month. He is buried in a crypt, Kim pointed out.The identifying marks have worn off a large slab of concrete which Kim believes is the grave of John
Joiner, the first born son of Malachi and Rachel.Researching the family, Kim has found an obituary in a newspaper for Florence
JOINER, daughter of W.J. and Adeline
JOINER. Georgia died October 10, 1889, at the age of 19. "Her mortal remains were deposited in the old
JOINER graveyard," says the newspaper. So far Kim, her cousins and family members have not found that one, but they are still looking. She is planning to compile a family history book and is collecting old photographs of the ancestors.Meanwhile, as they continue to clear, they have found interspersed throughout the area beds of irises and lilies. They're looking forward to seeing what the flowers do now that they have sunlight again. And maybe the
JOINER ancestors are looking down on the family cemetery and the clearing their descendants have done and they are smiling at the work that has been done. Kim like to think so.".JAMES THOMAS
TOOKE served in Company E, 10th
Georgia.
