If you're still looking for info re: Harvey Hoff, here are some details I came across while helping my half brother, George Myron Topliff III (He's never used the numerals) with his genealogy. According to the federal census of 1850, Harvey Topliff was living in Springfield, Otsego, NY with his wife Isabel, 51, and children, Clark,20, MaryAnn,18, George Myron,17, Louisa,9, Juliet,8, Rosella,5, and Joseph,2. Hope that helps. My e-mail address is bob@rwhoff.com

Re: Topliff of Argyle NY

THis is an old thread but I'll add some thoughts. I am working on a theory that the Luther who was in Argyle in 1790 was the Luther b. 1737 to Samuel(3) and Hannah Trescott. His wife was Elizabeth. He seems to also be the Luther in German Flats in 1800 and eventually settling in Onondaga county.

I think Mike Topliff has conflated some of the descendants of Calvin/Jerusha Bicknell and Luther b. 1737/Elizabeth. I haven't seen the evidence that Luther b. ca 1816 is the son of Luther b. 1798. Mike also has Morris Topliff b. ca. 1803 as a son of Luther b. 1798! Mike has consistently refused to provide any real references for this assertion, which I do not understand considering how helpful he has been to others.

It seems clear that Morris b. ca. 1803, Luther b. 1816, and a Benjamin F. Topliff b. ca. 1808 were closely related, if not brothers. They appear in Rochester together in the 1820s and also have connections to Syracuse. Thus, I believe that they are from the Luther b. 1737 line, rather than the Luther/Charlotte Eaton line.

One possibility that I am working on is that Luther b. 1737 had an unrecorded son. His children were recorded in Willington, CT., but he seems to have left town and may be the Luther Topliff who enlisted in the Rev. Army from Gageborough (Windsor) MA. His son, Timothy was in the same unit. Luther b. 1737 had a son, Luther, who only survived a short time in 1755-1756. I'm not willing to rule out the possibility that he had another son later whom he also named Luther.

There are two interesting deeds recorded in Onondaga county that may help provide a clue. On 22 April, 1809, J Manley sells a lot to in Marcellus NY to Luther Topliff. On 18 March 1813, Luther Topliff and Elizabeth his wife sell that same lot to Luther Topliff, Jr. Futher, on 13 May 1815, Luther Topliff sells a piece of land with wife, Sally, acknowledging the deed.

I am of the mind that it was this Luther Topliff, Jr. who married Sarah Larned, not the Luther Topliff b. 1798. If born in 1798, Luther "Jr" would have been about 15 when his father sold him land. Possible but not probable. Moreover, Sarah (Larned) Topliff was b. 24 May 1781 (based on her gravestone), which would have made her considerably older than her husband if her were born in 1798. Again, possible but not probable. However, Luther b. 1737 and his wife, Elizabeth, had a second son named Luther, he would likely have been born between 1767 (last recorded child) and about 1775 (Elizabeth gave birth to her first child in 1755).

I have a road trip planned to check out some further records in Windsor, Argyle, German Flats, and Syracuse. I'd appeciate any comments, suggestions, or corrections you might have.

Best,
Brooke

Alfred Topliff, 1799-1879, son of John & Suanna (Jacobs) Topliff, MA>WI

From the “History of Columbia County, Wisconsin – 1880”, there is a biographical sketch under the ‘Town of Columbus’ for Alfred Topliff (deceased); was born in Westfield, Mass, Nov 11, 1799; he was the youngest of a family of eight children, whose parents were John and Susanna (Jacobs) Topliff. Mr Topliff devoted much of his earlier life to teaching in his native State, and, in the spring of 1844, he came to Columbus, Wis., but soon after located in the town of Hampden, and there went to work making improvements, and preparing a home for his family, who were then East; in 1846, he went back for his family, consisting of a wife and three daughters, and when he returned with them he found that he had been elected County Supervisor, an office which he held till the year 1870, when he resigned, but the instruments which he loved so well were not allowed to become rusty for want of use; many were the lines run and road laid out by him. Scarcely a year before his death, did he give up the profession that he had followed so long and faithfully; in 1851, he was elected a member of the Wisconsin Legislature and re-elected in 1852, proving himself to be an active, intelligent and honest member of that body; in 1855, he removed to the City of Columbus (then village) and resided here till his death, which occurred Nov 3, 1879; his wife having died eleven years before him; he left a family of three daughters --- Mrs Chadbourn, Mrs Waterhouse and an unmarried daughter.

I may be able to fill in the gaps a little about one of Elias' children. Newton Reed (I believe the oldest son) is my great-great-grandfather. I don't recall the name/DOB of his wife, but he had a son named Ezra Newton (1880s?). Ezra married woman named Emmaline (that might not be spelled correctly). They had one son in 1915 - John Elwyn Topliff. John (everybody called him by his middle name though) married Ruby Haggart in 1943? and they had one son in 1945 - Harold James Topliff. Harold married Marilyn Ross in 1968 and they had four children - Angela, Aaron, Adam, and Amy (myself.) There are only a few of us left in Jewell Co, but my oldest brother, Aaron, still farms the land in SW Jewell Co. that was handed down by Ezra.

I hope this helps some and if you have any questions, please let me know. My email is amy_topliff@yahoo.com. My dad has an old geneology that might help too. Thanks!
Amy Topliff

Just came into some info that has thrown me. Looking for a Mary Toplif(t) Wheeler who was married to a Lysander Darling? She may be buried in Allamakee County, IA. there isa Toplift family I have found on the 1850 Ceneus for Allamakee that shows a Mary age 16. This means she was born around 1834 and if my info is correct, in Rhode Island. I need to confirm or dismiss relationship to Lysander Darling. A Wheeler name is also connected in here; she may have been a married to a Wheeler first. Thanks, Judy

i was watching tv a few weeks ago and spotted the name 'john tapley'in the credits. i am 70 years young and it's the
first time i have ever noticed a name that could be a
possible relative. i can't remember the name of the movie
but it was british and i think the reason i saw the name
is that they were listed in manner they appeared and he
was the first name to show up. also, i wonder if he is
related to our very popular possible relative 'john topley'.
the gentleman who has given us topliff's in america
information worth a king's ransom. i thank you john for
all your hard work.
i hope someone reads this tidbit...dan topliffe

topliff - topley - tapley - british film 'the safe cracker'

i posted a similar message a few days ago but i remembered
the name of the movie 'the safe cracker' starring ray
milland and others. the name of 'john tapley' showed up as
another starring person and this is the first time i have
ever noticed a name that just might be a relative. this picture which is very british, was an old army film. i'm
not sure who still may be alive. i wondered also if this
john tapley could be a relation of john topley who most
of us know of as the gentleman who has given us topliffs
etc. a kings ransom worth of information of our geanalogy
family of many years gone by. i thank you john topley
for all your hard work. i hope someone reads this tidbit
and responds...thanks

Re: can anyone help?

On the Otsego county NY genweb it shows a Harvey Topliff in the Middle Village Cemetery in Springfield town, died 6/11/1856 at age 51 years, 1 month and 29 days. There are no other Topliff names listed there. In the census (I forgot make note of year, either 1860 or 1870)there is an Isabell Topliff in the Springield NY. So it looks like you are on the right track.

The 1880 census I find a George Topliff in the Dakota territory, showing he and his family all born in NY. But this same family seems to be the same one in 1870 in Oak Glen, Steele county MN, which lists him as George N Topliff, age 36, born in MA, his wife Hannah 34 NY, Clarence 13 NY, Charley 11 WI, George M 9 WI, Laura 8WI, Willis MN.

I found a bio on George W. Granger in the History of Olmstead county MN, born 1869, that says his mother was Louisa, daughter of Harvey Topliff from Otsego county NY. It looks like she was born about 1827. She married Abner Granger.
