His father is Henry Byron born 1 sep.1897 Mo. we beleive his father is Joseph A. Torrance 26 Jul 1876 Ks.married in Trenton 8 nov.1895 he married Ada Catherine Oldfather. I'm searching for John Freeman TORRANCE born 13 Jun 1884 either in North Dakota or Wisconsin (conflicting census info). He married Julia MOEN around 1908. They had three children: Ernest Bertram (1909), Crystal Geniveve (1910) and Ada Maxine (1913 or 1917), all born in ND. I THINK he may have been the son of Ira and Jennie (Jane?) TORRANCE, perhaps married in Wisconsin 1875?

I am researching Archibald Torrance born c 1762 in Dalkeith Midlothian Scotland. He may of been the son of Archibald and Ann nee Clelland but there are others born around that time. He married Agnes Turnbull a widow with two young children he died pre 1825.
Chidren Agnes, Isobelle, George and Mary they children married into Stewart, MacMillan, families.

I am conected to Archibald Torrance born c 1762 around Newtown Midlothian a flaxdresser in Scotland, he married Agnes Turnbull.
He was the son of Archibald Torrance and Ann Clelland.
You sound as if you have done more research than I as I have only gone in Scotland not back to Ireland.
Maybe we can compare notes and put this together

Archibald TORRANCE, Glasgow

Hello,

I have traced my line through six generations of "Archibald Torrance." My brick wall now is with Archibald Torrance, b. ~1801 in Ireland; m. Storie GAVIN ~1820 (presumably in Scotland). Children Archibald (b. 1821), Alex. (b. 1831), Daniel (b. 1836), Rebecca (b. 1838) and John (b. 1845). All kids except Arch were born in Scotland.

I am fairly sure that his father was Archibald Torrance, b. ~1775, m. Margaret McLaughlin/McLachlan (who was b. in Ireland in 1780). However, I have no record of any births, deaths, or marriages here.

I am looking into whether the elder may have been in one of the fencible infantry regiments stationed in Ireland around 1800. That seems to fit.

Any info on any of these folks would be great. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it would appear we are related as Edward McLean Torrance was my father and I can only presume that we are related through one of his two uncles, Charles and William.

Sounds very much as if we are distant relatives. Catherine McLean is one of my distant cousins. I tracked this side of the family through Edward McLean Torrance. The McLean side of things is proving very difficult to research. They originated on the Isle of Skye. My research suggests Donald was one of at least 3 brothers and two sisters. I have just finished updating my McLean tree and would be interested in sharing any information you might have.

My gg grandfather was :

John Torrance, Born 1813 in Northern Ireland possibly Donegal. Died May 28, 1872 in Stanley Township,Ontario.
He was a farmer near Newtonville in Durham County.
Moved to Huron County in 1867

He married Mary McKennet-Long, November 27, 1849 in Clarke Township, Port Hope, Ontario.

They had the following children:

1 John Alfred* Torrance.
Born December 25, 1850 in Clarke Township, Port Hope, Ontario. Died May 13, 1928 in Bayfield, Ontario.

3 Margaret Anne Torrance;

Hi Bruce, sorry it took so long to reply. The James Torrence I had d. in IL his first wife Margaret Arbuckle d. by 1859 as he remarried her 1st cousin Margaret Sickman/Sigman in Guernsey Co.,OH. He had 3 daughters with Margaret Arbuckle. Sarah, Matilda "Tilley" and Mary who I just recently found out about. He had sons, as 2nd wife d. at one of their homes in IL.

City of La Crosse

JOHN TORRANCE, son of Gaven Torrance; was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Jan. 1, 1833; he received his education and learned the trade of a molder in the city of Glasgow; here he worked at his trade until 1852, when he emigrated to America and located in Troy, N. Y., where he remained but six months; he then went to Delhi, Delaware Co. N. Y., and for six months was in the machine-shops at that place; he returned to Troy, N. Y., and remained two years, then went to Paradise, Ky., where he worked at his trade until 1858, when he came West and located a farm in Houston Co., Minn.; he remained on the farm but a short time, however, having located in La Crosse in the spring of 1859. His ability as a tradesman soon won for him the foremanship in the foundry of Leech & Paul, in which capacity he was employed until 1862; during this year he started a foundry at the foot of State street, having associated with him Archibald Gould, under the firm name of Torrance & Gould; in 1865, the shop - a frame structure - was burned, and the business was abandoned. He again entered the employment of Leech & Paul, and subsequently worked with C. C. & E. G. Smith, and also Thornley & James. In 1876, in company with his son, he established his present business, which, guided by Mr. Torrance's experience and business qualifications, now ranks amoung the leading foundry and machine-shops in the city. Mr. Torrance was married, in Delhi, N. Y., Jan. 3, 1852, to Isabella Torrance, daughter of William and Mary (Johnston) Torrance; they had six children - Isabella, Mary, William, Nettie, John, Annie and May, who died in August, 1880. Mrs. Torrance died Nov. 14, 1866, in Evansville, Ind. In 1876, Mr. Torrance crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the third time, and, while in Edinburgh, was married to Mrs. Mary Gibson, nee Patterson, in May, 1876. Mr. Torrance belongs to the Universalist Church, and is a Knight Templar.

I have no specific Alexander but thought there might be a connectin.
I am a direct descendent of Thomas(Andrew) Torrance reportedly born in Larkhall 1735 and died there 1805. I have found no records for him. He had 5 sons Thomas (b 1776), John (b 1786), Benjamin
(b 1788), James (b 1789) and William b1790). I have found an OPR that locates Benejamin and his mother in Sorn. The sons migrated to Canada in
the early 1800s. One record shows that the first named Thomas may be alternately named Andrew. Andrew is shown married to Marion Gibb. The Gibb name is common in that William my ancestor married Isabella Gibb. Also
James Gibb came to Quebec and worked with William.
Any information about these family members and their ancestors/origins would be appreciated. I do know that they were merchants in Canada. What might have been the reason/s that they left Scotland? What might have been occurring there about 1810-1815. I suspect the were Presbyterians.

More about Torrance/Cook union: James states his residence when married as Lucas Manitoba. I have found the death register for his wife (I think) Rebecca Cook/Torrance. She died Dec.15 1889. They were married almost 2 yrs before she died. Signature & description of residence for informant is J.S. Torrance of Grey Township. Am wanting to know if they had any children before she died & who James remarried or if he did. Thanks

William Torrance, b 1739ish Dartsmouth (son of Alexander Torrance & Mary Cannon) is part of my direct line.

William was the Gson of Arthur Hathaway & Sarah Cooke and the GGGGgrandson of Francis Cooke (1583 - 1663) and Hester Mahieu.
(I've recently been told that the Vaughn line also connects to this Mahieu family.)

Could you explain a bit further what you know on the ancestors and descendants of William David Torrance and Margaret Jane Cook? All of these first names are seen in my line, too.

I have just started building the family tree for the Torrances based in Edinburgh. My grandfather was Andrew 1879 who married Catherine McLean 1879 whose parents were Donald McLean c.1855 and Euphemia McAskill c.1855 possibly from Elgin/Nairn.

Andrew (1879) had two brothers Charles (1878) and William (1883) who married a Christina Dawson c.1890. I believe his descendants may have emigrated to Australia.

My great grandfather was William Torrance c.1849 who married Jane/Jeannie McLean c. 1852 in Elgin. Her parents were Jane McPhail (1811) daughter of Alexander McPhail and Ann Clark, and Charles McLean c.1814 son of Charles McLean and Ann Grant..

My great great grandfather was Andrew Torrance c.1825 who married a Mary Morrison

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

After many months searching in the Scottish records, I finally found from the 1861 Census in Edinburgh, that my GGgrandparents Andrew TORRANCE c.1800 and Mary MORRISON are listed as born in Ireland. I can't find my Ggrandfather's birth, their son William TORRANCE, so he may have also been born in Ireland.

The family seems to alternate the names Andrew and William or Charles in successive generations. Does anyone have any links?
