I do not know if they had any more children etc. If you have further information I would love to know about it.

Hi - I have done a little research on this family in Balto. Co., mainly census. My ancestor, Sarah Tovell (1799-1854) was born in Md., and named her oldest son Nimrod Skipper (1819-1852). She is probably connected to Caleb Tovell, but I don't know how. Caleb is still alive in the 1860 Census for Balto. Co. He is 84, a farmer, born in Md. wife Mary age 70, and Samuel age 35, carpenter. The name is spelled Tuble in the census. Next door is a possible son, Rumber (?) Tuble. In 1850 Caleb Tovell is 71, a cooper, with wife Mary age 60, and children Reuben, 26, Samuel, 27, and Sarah, 23.

TOVELLS OF CHELMONDISTON

General:

I am interested in researching the TOVELLS of Chelmondiston. I was born Christine TOVELL and descended from Daniel TOVELL - my g.g. grandfather was his son John TOVELL whose son Hazell TOVELL (b.1868 died 25.3.1950) married Rosina Cosker and moved to Windsor and Eton. His son was Herbert TOVELL and my father Kenneth TOVELL.

I would very much like to know what happened to Hazell's siblings - Horatio, Frederick, Charles? The younger siblings were born in Woolverstone. I would appreciate any help. I have only recently started doing genealogy.

Doug,
Thanks for your response, and information on the TOVELL family in Baltimore county. I think this is probably the right family, and my ancestor, George Lafayette Tovell must be related to them. Considering the ages and generations, I think it is likely he was connected to Sarah Tovell, and possibly a brother? His daughter, Phebe Ann TOVELL, was born in 1826. George Lafayette TOVELL was probably a young adult in about the same generation as your Sarah TOVELL. Do you know any more about Sarah's family, her parents and siblings? George was a travelling salesman for some time in the early years of his marriage, and so is hard to pin down in records. Eventually he became a harness maker and in old age settled in York County PA. Thanks, again -- Judith

Hi Peter

Thanks a lot for your e-mail. Please could you tell me where Samuel and Martha were married? Was it Chelmondiston?

I must get my own records out this weekend. I had started putting everything on to the computer but I tend to do my genealogy nowadays in fits and starts. I do have quite a lot of info (from baptismal/marriage/deaths recorded in parish registers) on the Manning family but can't remember off hand just how far back I went.

You mention Windsor -- do you know any of the current Chelmondiston or Ipswich Tovells? Until you came along I had no idea we were in Windsor!

Anne

Hello Anne - I spent a while at the Ipswich records office and found a marriage on April 19th 1787 of Samuel T to Martha Manning (b July 16th 1765), Samuel was stated as being from Erwarton and Martha from Chelmo. Further information from that marriage (not fully confirmed as it was nearing closing time) seemed to be as follows:
Martha Manning, daughter of John Manning (b Jan 12th 1745, d 19th Oct 1785) and Martha Asbys (m 28th Nov 1764), was (maybe) the sister of Walter M (b 24 Oct 1784), Thomas M (b 29th Oct 1780), Benjamin M (b 10th April 1774, d 6 Oct 1781), Joseph M (b 26th April1767, d 14 April 1794) and James M (b 9th June 1771 and subsequently married Esther Skipper on 8th Dec 1795, having children Sarah 1796 and Esther 1799). John Manning was the son of Thomas Snr and Suzannah (d 18th Dec 1775). There's plenty more but I don't want to confuse you; it all seemed fairly clear at the time, but the above is from my notes.
My connection is through Samuel junior (brother of Daniel b 1801) who went via the British army to settle in Windsor (long story).
Hi Peter - thanks for your e-mail.

Please could you tell me exactly how you know Samuel Tovell came from Erwarton. I have spent hours looking through Suffolk parish records and could not find out his birthplace. Because so many Tovells originate from Essex I began to assume he had come from there especially as another contact of mine, Judy Kimber who has also been doing research on the Tovell line, came to the same conclusion.

Also, what is your own direct ancestry line? Mine is through Samuel/Martha - Daniel/Maria Cleveland - Daniel/Ada Alberta King- Walter Edward Tovell (my grandfather)/Kate Maud French and George Alfred Tovell (my father).

Have you been doing genealogy for long? I first started almost 30 years ago now.

Hope to hear from you.

Anne

Hello Anne - Samuel (husband of Martha Manning) came from Erwarton, was born about 1769, and died Chelmondiston 24 May 1804. He was my G3 grandfather. If you'd like to compare notes please email me on tovell@cwcom.net , Peter

I have only recently come across this site and was interested to learn (at least I am assuming this is the case) that you are a descendant of the Chelmondiston Tovell family. My own father, George Alfred Tovell was the son of Walter Edward Tovell (whose sister Mabel married Walter Gardiner - whose daughter Toni married King Hussein of Jordan). Walter was the son of Daniel Tovell and Ada Alberta King. Daniel was named after his father, Daniel who married 3 wives but Maria Cleveland was his mother. Daniel in turn was the son of Samuel who married Martha Manning. So far all were rooted in Chelmondiston - but with Samuel the easy road becomes more difficult as he appears to have come from elsewhere and to date I have not discovered exactly where. Would you know?

If you have the time to respond I should be very glad to hear from you.

Anne

Hello again Malcolm - have just read another of your messages about Daniel and Maria. Daniel's father was Samuel Tovell who married Martha Manning. Parish records suggest that Samuel originally came from Essex - possibly Raintree (I think that is the name) but I didn't go further there. Daniel's Maria was one of 3 wives. As I'm at work I cannot remember the exact names of the other 2 but Maria Cleveland I seem to remember was the second wife and the first was also called Maria - I think!

If you respond to this then I'll try to give you more info.

Anne

Hi Malcolm

I was born a Tovell and am a descendant of George Alfred Tovell, Walter Edward Tovell, Daniel Tovell and Daniel Tovell - all of whom were born in Chelmondiston (with the exception fo my own father who was born in Ipswich). I have been doing genealogy on and off for over 25 years. I have just come across this site and wonder where you yourself fit into the Tovell line (if at all). I am also wondering if you have had any contact with a Patricia King?

In the early 19th century some Tovells settled in Windsor. I am trying to find which part of Suffolk/Norfolk/Essex they came from. The second Windsor generation was Samuel Tovell 1805-51. Samuel's father's dates are 1786-1850. Samuel's children were Henry William, Emily, George, Samuel William, Charles, Walter and Frederick Augustus. Any help much appreciated. Peter T

Hi Bob,
I unfortunately married into the family and my father - in - law died about 7 years ago, and as for the family history, I am afraid I was kept in the dark, have you tried geneology.co.uk,
there is an ancestry site for the name of Tovell, If you contact my daughter at cdisales@mweb.co.za, she should be able to give you the e-mails address, unfortunately I have deleted it .

But I must say that there was a large contingent of Tovells in Sufforlk and the surrounds, where the name originated from.

I must admit I was only trying to contact my childrens Grandmother who married an American, or their aunt who is somewhere in the UK, its just that they need to find their roots, the history given to them by their Dad was vwery sketchy as there was some problems in the family unit.
If you find anything else out I would very much appreciate it if you could inform me.

Thanks in advance

Tessa

Hi. I'm wondering if you are related to the Reverend Isaac Tovell (1800s), whose Father was either born or married in Suffolk, England. My Great Great Grandfather, Robert Nichols and Isaac's Father, married sisters. I would very much like to find out the maiden name of Isaac's Mother, as it would be the same as Robert Nichols wife's maiden name. This would help me confirm a marriage record. Thank you.
