The TOVREA / TOVERY Surname DNA Group has been organized.
The goal of the TOVREA/TOVERY/TOVERA Surname DNA Project is to determine if there is a familial relationship between these lines. This relationship can be confirmed or disproved with Y-DNA testing. Are men with these surnames descendants of a common ancestral line? Other spellings of this name have included TOVEREA, TOVREY, TOVARY, TOBERRY, TOBERA, TOWERY, TAVERY, LOVERA, LOVERY, and even LOWERY.
Early records include the states of MD, VA, and PA. Later records, from 1800, are found in Anderson Co., TN, IL, IA, LA, OR, TX, AZ (where the Tovrea Castle is located.)
Some family traditions claim a Maryland connection, and that is where the TOBERRY surname is found in the latter 1600's. It is very likely that the TOVREA lineage is the same. Also the Thomas TOVERA / TOVERY / TOBERRY who served in the Rev War from PA is probably the same Thomas that is listed with the "Flying Camp" of MD (these RW military units spread across several states, and a Thomas TOVERY from PA was also listed).

That will take you to a website at FamilyTreeDNA where you can sign up to join the study and order your DNA test kit. Fill out the form and select which test you want. It is recommended that you start with the 25 marker test if it is affordable to you. That is the second choice on the list, it is called Y-DNA Plus. It will make comparisons within family lines easier. Also, later on, you can add the extra 12 markers to complete the 37 marker test. 37 markers are used to determine at what generation your line branched off when other lines match yours. Some people just go ahead and do the whole test if they can afford it.
You can pay by Credit Card when you make the order or you can have them send you an invoice and you can send them a check.
The kit should get to you in about 3 days. It contains two little toothbrush-like things and two little bottles with some liquid in them.
You take the little swab/brush out of the packet and rub the inside of your cheek for about a minute. Then you put the brush in one of the little bottles and use the plunger on the end of the brush to push the little brush loose from the stick and into the liquid in the bottle. Be sure the cap is on good. Wait at least 8 hours before you do the second brush just like the first. There is also a piece of paper (green) in the kit that you should sign that lets the project compare your results with others.
The results will be back in about 6 weeks and the company will send the result to you and to us. We will get in touch with you to tell you what we have learned from your test.
If you have a questions, please let us know.
