George W. Tow aka Dow????

Hello, my great grandfather was George Washington Tow. He was born in 1856 in Indiana, and died 12/28/1946 in Washington Arkansas. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Wallen. She was born Oct, 1867, in Wolfe, Kentucky. She passed away May 27, 1924, in Hartshorn, Oklahoma. My grandfather was William Tow, married to Jenny "Mae" Terrell,
my mom was Joyce Helen Tow.

I have found some information that shows a George W. Tow, then it shows his father to be Henry Daniel Dow, and mother to be Elizabeth Baggerly. I found a censes record as well showing the information, same age.
Just wondering if anyone has heard of this. I can send you the link if you like.

Jeannie jeanbritton@hotmail.com

Hi Gavin,
I found a document showing the name Dow. It has George W. Tow, and then his father as Henry D. Dow. I also found a family tree with the same information.
I am not sure if it is legitimate or not. I will send it to you if you let me know what your e-mail is.
Tow/Towe/Tower/Towers DNA testing...looking for participants

I am the administrator for the Tow/Towe/Tower/Towers DNA Surname project on familytreedna.com. We currently have four participants and looking for more. One is a known descendant of William & Rebecca Lance Tow. Since so many of these lines seemed to spring from the south or the North Carolina area, we hope to find a connection between these.

Go to this link:
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Tow/Towe/...

To participate, you must be a direct male descendant. The surname of Tower/Towers has been added since we do know that one branch out of William and Rebecca Lance Tow changed the surname to Tower/Towers.

I will say I'm nowhere near understanding all that this DNA testing tells...so I am not able to answer any questions on what all this is telling us other than whether or not lines are related. Familytreedna.com was chosen due to the time frame they have been conducting this service, references from others who have used the service and reliability. I also asked others who have done the project which marker test they recommended and the majority said the 37 marker test. A special pricing is being offered through July 7th so it's a great time to participate.

Tony Pope
pope1966@att.net

Hi Susan or Gavin,

I have a Tow relative that contacted me and she is interested in the DNA project, here is her email address.
Her name is Betty Tow
fbtow@att.net

Also my distant cousin Carl Martin gave me this information posted below. Hope this is helpful. :)

Cheyrl Velten
cvranch@gmail.com

Hi Cheyrl;
Finding the Tow males would be a tough job. William Tow had 4 sons and two of those (Monroe and James) had no children......that leaves William Riley who had several sons....but I have no addresses and John Calvin who had five sons of which one died infancy and Uncle Marion had no children. Uncle Johnie Tow had one son who died infancy and one daughter. So from John Calvin that leaves two sons who had sons......Uncle Henry had a bunch of sons and their families are scattered all over from Indiana to California. Uncle Wade had only one son who also only had one son who lived in Memphis....but I don't have names or addresses and I think that line ended up all girls in Memphis.
You would probably know more about Wilson Tows male descendants and I know they are scattered all over too. I think it would be quite a task to try and find all of these people. I know nothing about a DNA project on the Tow family.
Gavin, I am descended from William Tow & first wife, Rebecca Lance Tow out of Buncombe County, NC who settled in Union County, GA. Along with several other Tow/Towe researchers, we have been working on tracking lines for awhile and even had a meeting of the minds in Asheville, NC last June. We are still trying to figure out my William Tow's parentage (believe it highly likely to be Jesse Tow & Nancy Haws Tow). I have been looking at www.familytreedna.com as the place to use for our family tree dna testing. Hoping to get this done within the next week and order a kit for one of our direct male descendants.

Tony Pope
pope1966@aol.com

Hi Gavin,

I have the same question. I am a descendant of Wilson Tow, who arrived in Texas from Missouri about 1850. No one has been able to prove who his parents are or to connect him definatively to the Tow families in North Carolina, although it seem most likely that he did come there. One of my brothers would be willing to participate in a DNA test if we could find a male who can prove descendant from Christopher Tow of North Carolina to participate as well.

If anyone is interested, I would be willing to set up a DNA group through Ancestry so we could share our results and let other Tow's participate in the fun.
Susan Tow

William T finally settled in Nevada, Vernon Co, Missouri.
As to her relationship to Lorenzo - well, I just don't know. Her grandfather is a first cousin, twice remoced. What I am trying to do is to tie the various Tow/Towe lines to her line and I've run into a lot of confilcting information. Most of it appears to arise with the glut of Williams in the early 1800s. Everyone wants to be directly related to Chris Junior's son, William while no one wants to claim any of his three (William) grandsons.

Mike
1860 census - Tennessee

1860 Federal Census for Campbell County, Tennessee:

Has anyone tried to sort this out? On this Census they designated only male or female – not ”Head, Wife, Son or Dau”.

Wm R Tow Age: 26	B: abt 1834	North Carolina
Mary Tow Age: 22	B: abt 1838	Tennessee
Alexander Tow	Age: 18	B: abt 1842	Tennessee
Nancy Tow Age: 19	B: abt 1841	Tennessee
Lorenzo Tow Age: 22	B: abt 1838	Tennessee
Riley Tow Age: 13	B: abt 1847	Tennessee
Archibald Tow	Age: 11	B: abt 1849	Tennessee
John Tow Age: 9	B: abt 1851	Tennessee
Nancy Tow Age: 7	B: abt 1853	Tennessee
Mary Ann Age: 5	B: abt 1855	Tennessee

Judging form the original, Mary could be the wife of Wm R & Nancy the wife of Alexander.
None appear old enough to be the parent(s) of the youngest five children. The way they are positioned on the census they could be the siblings of Lorenzo and possibly of Wm and Alexander.

Anyone have any ideas?

Mike
William Tow -Kelsay/Lance/McCarty

Who married Mary Jane Kelsay?
Who married Rebecca Lance?
Both, apparently married a William Tow born in the early 1800s.

Who are the real parents of William, Nicholas, James & Julia Tow?
Are they John & Mary McCarty Tow?
Or are they Ezekiel and Margaret Minerva (unk) Tow?

I have been attempting to expand the Tow side of my wife's family tree with information available on-line – documents, obits, newspaper articles, published family trees, etc.
I ran into trouble was when I tried to incorporate the information of various family trees into my files. It seems that both the Kelsays and the Lances wanty to lay claim to the same william Tow and the McCartys and Margaret Minerva's line can't decide who the real parent are of the kids.

Does anyone really know?
Hi! I can solve the mystery for you. What is confusing about this census, is the errors the census taker made in recording the ages. Where some of the people are recorded as being in their 20's, they should be in their 30's.Now as to who is who. Wm R., Mary, Alexander, Nancy, and Lorenzo are brothers and sisters. The children listed under Lorenzo are his. His first wife died and he went to live with his siblings. Hope that clears it up for you. Lorenzo is my great great grandfather. How are you connected?

And since Charles named a son William, this older William could be a brother of Charles.

Charles' son William names a son Charles A. in 1876, (by his second wife Pernicia Roberts.) William's much earlier son, James Washington Tow, (by his first wife Rebecca Lance), likewise names a son Charles A. in 1876. Thus this trend of naming sons Charles tends to support the likelihood that Charles of 1798 is the progenitor of William of 1822, as further evidenced by the aforementioned Census migration patterns.
1 2 3
Change Date: 19 Feb 2008 at 00:00:00

Marriage 1 Sarah b: ABT 1800 in , , NC, USA
Married: ABT 1820 in , , NC, USA
Children
William TOW b: 1822 in , , NC, USA

Sources:
Title: US Census: 1830, NC, Buncombe Co.
Title: US Census: 1840, NC, Buncombe Co.
Title: US Census: 1850, GA, Gilmer Co.
#################
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...
ID: I5464
Name: William TOW
Surname: TOW
Given Name: William
Sex: M
Birth: 1822 in , , NC, USA
Death: in Sonoraville, Gordon, GA, USA
Burial: Concord Bapt.
Nancy M. Tow/Towe & Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Hite (GA & AL)

I recently came across info. on FamilySearch about Andrew Jackson Hite (or A.J. Hite) who married Nancy M. Low of Lumpkin County, GA on Nov. 16, 1871. I also came across a posting on Ancestry.com from Ann Gable-Lingerflet on ANDREW JACKSON HITE (b. 1852) who married NANCY M. LOWE. I believe that Nancy's name has been transcribed wrong from the original document...a case we have been finding on others in our Tow/Towe (pronounced like cow) line. Apparently many of the transcribers to do not recognize the Tow/Towe surname and believe that the writer's T's are actually L's. As you can imagine this has created a lot of extra effort in tracking down our Tow/Towe line.

Nancy Melinda Tow was the daughter of William Tow & Rebecca Lance Tow. Rebecca was the daughter of Martin B. Lance and Jerusha Fletcher Lance in the Buncombe County, NC area. William had helped with the removal of the Cherokee somewhere and had signed up in the Buncombe County area. He moved to the Union County, Georgia area where he lived pretty much the rest of his life.

We knew that William and Rebecca had a daughter named Nancy M. based on the census we found in Union County, but we didn't know what became of her (who she married, etc.) until we came across some estate records of Martin B. Lance after he died and then some real estate records after Jerusha Lance died (Rebecca's parents).

The Lance family did not have records of Rebecca and only after some of the family happened to make contact did they discover that she had apparently been written out of the family. A year or two ago, one of our family contacts found research from the 1970's or 1980's by a Lance family researcher at the North Carolina State Archives. A note on a page about children of Martin B. & Jerusha Lance's children had a daughter Rebecca who had married a Tow and moved to Georgia against her parents wishes. Rebecca happened to die before her parents. Martin B.'s estate record lists all of her children as receiving Rebecca's part of the estate which equaled about $10 each.

Real estate records later after Jerusha has died shows Rebecca's brother, Newton, paying Rebecca's children for Lance real estate they had apparently inherited. Once again the children's names are listed with the location of where they were living and for the females, it listed their married name and their husbands name. Nancy was listed as Nancy M. Hite and married to A.J. (or Andrew J. Hite) and living in Bartow County, Georgia at that time. Also listed was Nancy's sister, Dolly/Dollie who was listed as Dolly/Dollie Garland and living in Bartow County, Georgia too. No husband was listed for Dolly, but we have surmised that she was married and widowed young. We have found very little info. on her, but did find her living in the household with A.J. and Nancy M. Hite in the 1880 census for Forsyth County, Georgia. I want to say that it was around 1882 or 1883 that she was living in Bartow County, Georgia when the real estate transaction took place.

I came across some other research by a Merry Ann Simmons looking for information on this Hite line and she is apparently descended through Andrew & Nancy's oldest daughters children who are listed as living in Andrew & Nancy's household in Cherokee County, Alabama in 1910 census. A different wife from Nancy is listed...so I think she must have died and Andrew remarried by that time. Looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully getting more information on this lineage. I have tried contacting Merry Ann Simmons, but have yet to find a current e-mail address...and even tried snail-mailing an address she had post. No result from any of them...e-mail addresses no longer active and has moved from that address.

I am pasting below information on William Tow and his children. He was married first to Rebecca Lance Tow and second to a Pernecy/Perniece Seabolt Lunsford1 Tow2. I am descended through William and Rebecca's son, John Tow...brother to Nancy. I had trouble finding John's death certificate here in Georgia until someone suggested that it might have been misspelled...and found it right off under John LOW.

Some of the line moved from Union County, Georgia and then to Gordon County, Georgia and into Bartow and Floyd Counties of Georgia. Around the turn of the 20th century we began to see most of the lines add an "e" to the original spelling of TOW. We have pictures of the following children of William & Rebecca: Martha Jane Tow, James Washington Tow, John Tow, Samuel Lafayette Tow, and Sarah Emiline Tow.

Below is information on William Tow and his children...including Nancy.

Descendants of William Tow

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 TOW was born Abt. 1820 in North Carolina (Source: Rhea Cumming Otto, 1850 Census of Union County, Georgia, (CR: 1990), 54, Household #110.), and died January 26, 1896 in Sonoraville, Georgia (Gordon County) (Source: Samuel Lafayette Towe, Letter from Samuel Lafayette Towe to Department of the Interior, (Written: August 19, 1897).). He married (1) REBECCA A. LANCE Abt. 1843 in Prob. Buncombe County, North Carolina, daughter of MARTIN LANCE and JERUSHA FLETCHER. She was born Abt. 1827 in North Carolina (Source: Rhea Cumming Otto, 1850 Census of Union County, Georgia, (CR: 1990), 54, Household #110.), and died 1869 in Union County, Georgia. He married (2) PERNIECE ELIZABETH SEABOLT May 07, 1871 in Union County, Georgia. She was born 1844, and died Aft. 1900.

William & Rebecca had the following children: Martha Jane Tow who married Thomas Bishop; James Washington Tow who married Nancy Hannah Everett; Mary Jerusha Tow who married Lorenzo Byrd "Bud" Posten/Poston; Jesse Martin Tow who married Lourania Luraney Lunsford; Nancy Melinda Tow who married A.J. (Andrew Jackson) Hite; John Tow who married Elizabeth Holloway; Samuel Lafayette Tow who married Mary Jane Wallace; Dolly Rebecca Tow who married an UNKNOWN Garland (and possibly an UNKNOWN Lee later); and William J. Tow.
Re: 1860 census - Tennessee

Mike, I was in Asheville, NC back in early June with several other Tow/Towe/Lance researchers. Two that were there, Sandy Jordan and Frieda Klopfenstein have worked with Betty Tow of Texas (think she knows you or your wife). Sandy, Frieda and Betty have all done extensive work on documenting Tow/Towe's coming out of North Carolina. I agree about all the William's! Frieda has ties with one line of Tow/Towe's, Sandy with one, Betty with one and me with one...and we've yet to find a connection...though it sure seems highly probably there has to be. They all came out of NC (surname is unusual) and lived relatively near one another. We think that my William who married Rebecca Lance of Henderson County, NC /Buncombe County, NC might be the son of Jesse Tow & Nancy Haws Tow. William & Rebecca had ten kids...and almost all of them have names that can be traced back to Rebecca's siblings. However, there are two kids who have names that seem out of place...a son named JESSE Martin (Rebecca's father's was Martin B. Lance) and NANCY Melinda. We think this adds more to the case that William may have named two of the kids after his parents...Jesse & Nancy.

Tony Pope
Pope1966@aol.com

Tow/Towe & Garland connections in Union County, Georgia

Looking for anyone with ties to Garland's who lived in Union County, Georgia.

I and other family researchers have been trying to track down the first husband to an elusive ancestor, Dollie/Dolly Rebecca Tow. We know she was married to a Garland based on her name listing in inheritance papers for her grandparents, Martin B. Lance & Jerusha Fletcher Lance of Henderson County (or Buncombe County), North Carolina. We know she was still listed as a Garland in the 1880 census for Forsyth County, Georgia living in the household of her sister, Nancy Melinda Tow Hite and Nancy's husband, Andrew Jackson "A.J." Hite.
I think I'm on the right track for Dolly's first husband...the unknown Garland.

While recently reviewing the 1880 Census for Union County Georgia I found a Caroline Garland and her family living very near some of Dollie's siblings and other family members.

In the 1880 census, Caroline Garland is listed as 35 (though I think it actually is 5-5 and not a 3-5) and a widow. In the household are daughter Mary (age 30 and widowed), son Elisha (age 30 and MARRIED), son Jason (age 22 and single), son Jefferson (age 17 and single), and son Marshall (age 9 and single). Notice Elisha's says "married," but where's his wife???

I went back and checked on Dollie Rebecca (Tow) Garland who is listed in the 1880 census in Forsyth County, Georgia in the household of her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy M. (Tow) Hite & Andrew Jackson A.J. Hite. Dollie is listed as 18 years old...and MARRIED! However, there is no husband for her listed in the household.... Could Elisha be her first husband? If so, why are they separated? Elisha would be about 12 years her senior if his and her birth ages are correct. Nancy has had one child (Frances R[ebecca]) who is 4 I think it says. Could Nancy have been pregnant and Dollie gone to help???

Also, I recently noticed Caroline Garland lived one household before Benjamin Austin Harkins and his family (this is the same BAA. Harkins who lived near William Tow at various other times....is my g.g. grandfather). One household BEFORE Caroline are Samuel & Mary Tow and family...Samuel was the son of William Tow and Samuel's wife, Mary Jane Wallace Tow is the step-daughter of Benjamin Austin Harkins'being the daughter of his second wife, Lavina "Vina" Millsaps Wallace1 Harkins2.

In the household before Samuel & Mary Jane Wallace Tow is the Henderson Poston family. Henderson and Ann Poston are the parents of Birdie Poston who is listed in the household before them along with his wife...Mary Jerusha Tow Poston...daughter of William & Rebecca Lance Tow.

I should note that in the 1870 and 1880 censuses I only found one Garland family living in Union County, Georgia...and that was Caroline Garland's family both times.

In the 1870 census for Union County, Georgia I found:

Garland, Caroline, age 35, born in GA
Garland, Mary A., age 21 (female)
Garland, Elisha, age 18 (male)
Garland, Minna, age 16, (female)
Garland, Jasper, age 14, (male)
Garland, Minda, age 13, (female)
Garland, Jefferson, age 4, (male)
Garland, William, age 2, (male)

Now to put an extra spin on this in our family briar patch, living in the household BEFORE this Garland family is Martha Bishop...that would be Martha Tow Bishop, oldest child of William & Rebecca Lance Tow AND oldest sister of Dollie Rebecca Tow. In this household are Martha (age 30), Alfred (age 8), Mary C. (age 6), Rebecca (age 4), and Jane (age 3).

Also, three households AFTER the Garland family in the 1870 census is James Tow (age 25), Nancy (age 25), and Pernecy/Pernica Seabolt (age 24) listed as a housekeeper. This is the same Pernecy/Pernica that will marry William Tow (father of James W., Marth Jane, Dollie Rebecca, etc.) within two years. This is also the census we have William's household first listed without first wife Rebecca Lance Tow (having died in 1869). Also the conflict with a "James" age 27 and "Dolly" age 25 in William's household and not sure if James Washington Tow (above) and wife Nancy were somehow counted in William's household as well as their own.

Back to the Garland's, more info for those interested, in the 1880 Census (Coopers Creek District) of Union County, Georgia...

Garland, Caroline, age 55 (she has jumped in age 20 years from previous census), born in NC?
Garland, Mary, age 30
Garland, Elisha, age 30
Garland, Jason, age 22
Garland, Jefferson, age 17
Garland, Marshall, age 9

What's funny is that there wasn't a "Mr. Garland" in the 1870 census or the 1880 census, but Caroline had had a child, Marshall, age 9 who had been born AFTER the 1870 census if that was correct. I wouldn't say we've figured out which one is Dollie's first husband. Are Jasper and Jason the same person? William from 1870 would have been 12, but the other ages are off as well...esp. Caroline's whose age reflects a 20 year difference between 1870-1880.

We know that Dollie R. Garland is listed in the 1880 census as 18 years old (born abt. 1862 which conflicts with the birth info. she gives in 1900 census as 1864) and living in Forsyth County, GA in the household of her sister (Nancy Melinda) who has married Andrew Jackson "A.J." Hite. Nancy and A.J. married in 1871 (when Dollie would have been about 9).

I think the best bets would be Elisha, Jasper/Jason, or Jefferson...but if it's one of them did they divorce Dollie? Did she go to visit or help her sister Nancy and her husband died?

We know that Dollie's sister, Nancy was married in Lumpkin County, Georgia...but I've yet to find Dollie's marriage listed...though I think I've looked in Lumpkin County marriage records. Have also looked in books on Union County, GA marriages..but I know for a fact those books are missing data AND have wrong data. The Tow/Towe surname has been misspelled many times so it's possible it is misfiled...but I have also tried looking up "Garland" and nothing matching.

I'm hoping someone out there in cyberland ties into this line and might have a notation about a Garland relative in Union County, Georgia marrying a Dollie Rebecca Tow.

Thanks in advance!

I am a descendant of William Tow and first wife, Rebecca Lance Tow. Rebecca was the daughter of Martin B. Lance and Jerusha Fletcher Lance. She and William were out of Henderson County, NC/Buncombe County, NC area. We have an active on-line group of Tow/Towe researchers...some from other Tow/Towe lines we are trying to connect our William too. Right now, we haven't proven this William's parentage, though it is highly likely based on where Rebecca's parents lived, that this William was the son of Jesse & Nancy Haws Tow(e).

E-mail me at:
Pope1966@aol.com

Tony Pope

What is your Lorenzo Tow(e)'s lineage?

I'm descended from William Tow & Rebecca Lance Tow who came out of the Buncombe County / Henderson County, NC area into Union County in North Georgia. Several of us Tow/Towe researchers met in Asheville, NC the first week in June to compare notes, etc. We also met with one of our Lance kin up there who took us around. From research he has done, we think it highly possible that our William's parents were Jesse Tow & Nancy Haws Tow who didn't live far from Rebecca's parents.

Please e-mail me at:
Pope1966@aol.com

Tony Pope

I have been trying for years to find back ground on my husbands family. I had hoped to finish it before he died but now I continue for my chldren that they may know their heritage. My husband's father was Cameron John Towne, it is said that he added the e on the end of his name when he came to the U.S. with his Mother, Jessie Mae Tyo of Martintown, Ontario, Canada. Cameron's father's name was George James Tow, his father's name was Robert John Tyo and all of his children went by the last name of Tow. I can't seem to get past this point. All had several children as did we. I would appreciate any help out there. The reason that I persue this is that a very bad heart disease has been passed down through this family. It killed Cameron's brother Leonard and my husband and now my youngest son now has the early stages of it. I have been told that George Tow was Irish with red hair and that red hair has come down through the family. I know that Robert married Diann Simpkins from England. It is an awful mess to untangle. I have joined Ancestry.com in hopes of getting some help on this. All help would be appreciated.
Millie Towne

I have just recently located the Tow last name in my family tree.... My ggggm was Margaret E. Tow who married Charles Alexander Pabst. Their son William M. Pabst was born in 1901 in Texas. They are all from Llano, Erath Co., TX. One census had that they married about 1887, but I can not find any other information about them.
Re: Tows with the wrong name

Mr. Jim Tow,

I understand it has been years since you posted this but it still rings true. I have been researching my family line of the Tow's for years and have seen these very issues. More with the Tow/Towe spelling than with anything else.

My Grandfather was Clarence Anderson Tow(1892-1940) from Clarksville TN. He died when my father, also named Jim, was almost two. Clarence is listed in the 1900 census with three sisters(Rosa, Ida, Norah) and his mother(Mary Elizabeth Williams, Mar 1864) but his father William died prior to that, when why or how I cannot find out. I know his name was William from Clarences social security application.
I also know William was from North Carolina, as were a great number of Tows.

The only other information I have on the family tree was passed from my Grandfather to my Uncle was Clarence wished his middle name survive and that name was Anderson. I have found several references to Anderson Tow and one moved from Buncombe Co, NC, to Tennesse with a son named William. Any connections I have made at this time are only speculation since I have no proof. There is also an Anderson Tow living in Montgomery Co. TN, same county as Clarksville which I believe to be the same Anderson but with second wife.

I also recently found out my Dad has a half sister by Clarence and her name is Margerette. My Dad was told this by his brother that she (Margerette) showed for my Grandfathers funeral and she was a twin of one of my Dads sisters Betty Lou (1930-1983). I can find nothing on her either.

If you have any information on this line of Tow's I would greatly appreciate it.

Robert Tow

Rebecca & Andrew Tow Jefferson County Missouri

I was at an end trying to find Rebecca in Missouri as I knew Andrew Tow had died sometime in 1867, of wounds from Civil War. They had only girls: Mary Jane b: 1849; Martha, Sarah Anne, Soffronia, Nancy, & maybe Eliza Ellen. I found the following site: SOS, Missouri-State Archives: Birth and death Records, Out of web site: Godfrey Memorial Library. In this site is a Death Record for Rebecca Tow died 1887 in Bonhomme Missouri. Going back to the 1880 Missouri census I found Rebeca Ton & daughter Emma Ton age 17, living with Rebecca's daughter Nancy Milican & Nancy's husband Thomas Milican. I sent a change name to Ancestry & they do have an Icon on the name of Ton. If you run Tow you won't come up with the name with Rebecca & Emma Tow. You have to run the last name of "TON"? I'm still unable to find this family in 1870, & there are a few Tow women marriage certificates in St Louis, Mo. I'm still looking.
