Allan -- Thanks for upddate on Edward Towe. The Certificate of Registration of Marriage from B.C. has Lloyd claiming his occupation as "modelling" and Myrtle claims her occupation as "entertainer." Wonder what she did? Do you know the name of her mother's 2nd husband? Lloyd & Myrtle left Las Vegas sometime after 1933, the year their son died there.
BTW, Lloyd went to Vancover because our BROWNs (uncles) were there,
Barbara

Allan: Lloyd Henry Brown died 11 Jan 1980 at Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. His father was Russell John Brown, and his mother Pearl Morgan. Actually, she was Bertha Pearl Morgan, but she HATED the name Bertha, refused to use that name, would not respond if you dared to call her by that name, etc. Except for Uncle Lloyd, we were all born in Ontario.

For Myrtle, I have birth date 31 Mar 1909 at Nelson, B.C. I nave no death information. Did Myrtle re-marry? If so, to whom & where? I have her parents as Edgar Alexander Towe and Florence Arabella Waterer. I have her sister as Mabel Elizabeth, and her brother as William John Leonard Towe. I know of no spouses, etc.
Barbara

Allan: Thanks for the reply. Uncle Lloyd & Myrtle, "Mary," had one son, Gordon LeRoy Brown, b. 1925 at Vancouver, and died 1933 at Las Vegas, Nevada, of Scarlet Fever. Lloyd was probably happy to return to the Detroit area, since the BROWNs were in that area. Lloyd & Myrtle were "entertainers" of some sort. I know that Lloyd and my father were live mannequins, modeling for the finest men's clothier in Detroit, posing, unmoving, in wonderful clothes in the store's plate-glass window.
Re: DNA mystery for surnames TOWE and WOOD

I received and e-mail from someone who had some knowledge about a family involved in a shipwreck: Nancy's maiden name was Hawes. We have found out interesting things about the line of Jesse Tow. Jesse's mother was Mary Tow (spelled Tough at least on one document I think). When Jesse was born in 1791(?), a William Wood signed a Bastardy Bond in NC. It's my understanding that these Bastardy Bond's were done when an unmarried female had a child. Generally it was the supposed father of the child, but could also be a male member of the family or community who said they would help take care of the child financially. We started a DNA study of Tow/Towe descendants last spring and our specific line out of William Tow & Rebecca Lance Tow appears to go back to Jesse & Nancy. Our primary tester out of our known line of descendants noticed that he wasn't matching other people with the Tow/Towe surname...but a lot of people with the last name of Wood/Woods was appearing as matches. We also know that Jesse & Nancy lived very close to the parents of Rebecca Lance Tow, Martin B. Lance & Jerusha Fletcher Lance.

Have you come across any male Tow/Towe descendants that are known descendants of Jesse & Nancy? While we are 99% sure that our William is out of Jesse & Nancy, we wanted to find a known descendant to participate in the DNA study.

Based on pension papers, census records, etc. we estimate our William's birth to be between 1816-1820. We know for sure he died 26 Jan 1896 in Sonoraville, Georgia [Gordon County].
I wonder if we are talking about the same family. The Cora I know is a Stamper and her mother is Naomia Rogers, Father is John Stamper. She was born August 7, 1892 and died October 28, 1985. This was about seven years after I spent a week at their house.

UPDATE on Tow/Towe DNA study

This is a reposting & UPDATE from a few months ago...

I am the administrator for the Tow/Towe/Tower/Towers DNA Surname project on familytreedna.com. We have had several participants in our Tow/Towe DNA project and are looking for more. FamilyTreeDNA is having a special pricing on the 37-marker test until the end of the 2009 year for $119. Since so many of these lines appear to spring from the south or the North Carolina area, we hope to find a connection

One of the people who participated is a known descendant of my particular line, that of William & Rebecca Lance Tow out of Buncombe County, NC. Documental evidence seems to point to Jesse & Nancy Haws Tow as the parents of this William. Already, we have strong DNA evidence to support a connection on this line. Paper trails show that Jesse Tow was the son of Mary Tow. In the 1790s when Jesse was born, a William Wood signs a Bastardy Bond for the child of Mary Tow, Jesse Tow. When our known William & Rebecca Lance Tow DNA applicant's results came in, he did not match any other Tow/Towe in the study...but he was showing that he was matching several people who were participating in other studies with the last name of WOOD/WOODS. Those I was able to contact indeed went back to the aforementioned William Wood.

We are looking for a male descendant of Jesse & Nancy Haws Tow to participate in the study. Another applicant who traces ancestry back to a Tow believes to be a brother to Jesse, also matched the Wood/Woods lineage...once again showing that William Wood apparently fathered children through Mary TOW.

If you are interested in joining this study, try this link:

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Tow/Towe/...

If this does not work, e-mail me and I will send you an e-mail to join.

To participate, you must be a direct MALE descendant. For instance, I cannot participate since my direct male lineage goes back along the POPE/PABST line. Females also ARE NOT eligible since the DNA is passed father to son. The surname of Tower/Towers has been added since we do know that one branch out of William and Rebecca Lance Tow changed the surname to Tower/Towers.

I will say I'm nowhere near understanding all that this DNA testing tells...so I am not able to answer any questions on what all this is telling us other than whether or not lines are related. Familytreedna.com was chosen due to the time frame they have been conducting this service, references from others who have used the service and reliability. I also asked others who have done the project which marker test they recommended and the majority said the 37 marker test which is currently on sale for $119 + shipping.

Tony Pope
pope1966@att.net
We can trace back to William Tow & first wife, Rebecca Lance Tow who came out of Buncombe County, NC to Union County, GA around 1840s. I have a lot of pictures posted on my personal website on FaceBook too that I have managed to collect through the years. My Tow/Towe line came out of Union County to Gordon County, GA. Lines ended up in Bartow and Floyd County.

Tony Pope
pope1966@att.net

DNA mystery for surnames TOWE and WOOD

I took the yDNA test and just got my results back last week. I am hoping to get past my brick wall, Enoch Wood, with the test results. I have an exact match with a Wood family in Washington County AR that goes back to 1750. The other match I have goes back to about 1650 in VA. I only supplied the dates so that you know my line is from a male Wood ancestor. My brick wall, Enoch Wood, was born in SC in 1794 and can be found on the 1830 census of Habersham county Georgia, 1840 and 1850 census of Pope county AR.
Now the mystery. My yDNA test results match exactly with a male whose surname is TOWE. The match is from a 37 marker yDNA test, with no deviation, which means that we have a 99% probability of sharing a close male relative.
My question is, are there any TOWE families with a mystery origin?

On 1870 TX census William Tow age 59 b: N.C. with wife Mary b: Kentucky and son William age 23 b: Mo, and other children. Also listed is Wilson Tow age 53 b: Tn wife Margareth b: Kentucky and children Rubin 19 yrs b: TX, and the other boys born in TX were Richard 15, Charles 13, Samuel 11. There is a John age 20 b: Mo., wife Lucinda. I'm looking for Tow/Towe relatives in Tow Valley Llano Tx. I believe William and Wilson were brothers of Thomas Tow, b: N.C. who then went to Missouri. He was married to Lucretia, born about 1770 in Nansemond, or Yeopim (Powhaten) lands, Southampton, VA and died in Perquimans Co, NC.
Tow/Towe & Garland connections in Union County, Georgia

Looking for anyone with ties to Garland's who lived in Union County, Georgia.

I and other family researchers have been trying to track down the first husband to an elusive ancestor, Dollie/Dolly Rebecca Tow. We know she was married to a Garland based on her name listing in inheritance papers for her grandparents, Martin B. Lance & Jerusha Fletcher Lance of Henderson County (or Buncombe County), North Carolina. We know she was still listed as a Garland in the 1880 census for Forsyth County, Georgia living in the household of her sister, Nancy Melinda Tow Hite and Nancy's husband, Andrew Jackson "A.J." Hite.
I think I'm on the right track for Dolly's first husband...the unknown Garland.

While recently reviewing the 1880 Census for Union County Georgia I found a Caroline Garland and her family living very near some of Dollie's siblings and other family members.

In the 1880 census, Caroline Garland is listed as 35 (though I think it actually is 5-5 and not a 3-5) and a widow. In the household are daughter Mary (age 30 and widowed), son Elisha (age 30 and MARRIED), son Jason (age 22 and single), son Jefferson (age 17 and single), and son Marshall (age 9 and single). Notice Elisha's says "married," but where's his wife???

I went back and checked on Dollie Rebecca (Tow) Garland who is listed in the 1880 census in Forsyth County, Georgia in the household of her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy M. (Tow) Hite & Andrew Jackson A.J. Hite. Dollie is listed as 18 years old...and MARRIED! However, there is no husband for her listed in the household.... Could Elisha be her first husband? If so, why are they separated? Elisha would be about 12 years her senior if his and her birth ages are correct. Nancy has had one child (Frances R[ebecca]) who is 4 I think it says. Could Nancy have been pregnant and Dollie gone to help???

Also, I recently noticed Caroline Garland lived one household before Benjamin Austin Harkins and his family (this is the same BAA. Harkins who lived near William Tow at various other times....is my g.g. grandfather). One household BEFORE Caroline are Samuel & Mary Tow and family...Samuel was the son of William Tow and Samuel's wife, Mary Jane Wallace Tow is the step-daughter of Benjamin Austin Harkins'being the daughter of his second wife, Lavina "Vina" Millsaps Wallace1 Harkins2.

In the household before Samuel & Mary Jane Wallace Tow is the Henderson Poston family. Henderson and Ann Poston are the parents of Birdie Poston who is listed in the household before them along with his wife...Mary Jerusha Tow Poston...daughter of William & Rebecca Lance Tow.

I should note that in the 1870 and 1880 censuses I only found one Garland family living in Union County, Georgia...and that was Caroline Garland's family both times.

In the 1870 census for Union County, Georgia I found:

Garland, Caroline, age 35, born in GA
Garland, Mary A., age 21 (female)
Garland, Elisha, age 18 (male)
Garland, Minna, age 16, (female)
Garland, Jasper, age 14, (male)
Garland, Minda, age 13, (female)
Garland, Jefferson, age 4, (male)
Garland, William, age 2, (male)

Now to put an extra spin on this in our family briar patch, living in the household BEFORE this Garland family is Martha Bishop...that would be Martha Tow Bishop, oldest child of William & Rebecca Lance Tow AND oldest sister of Dollie Rebecca Tow. In this household are Martha (age 30), Alfred (age 8), Mary C. (age 6), Rebecca (age 4), and Jane (age 3).

Also, three households AFTER the Garland family in the 1870 census is James Tow (age 25), Nancy (age 25), and Pernecy/Pernica Seabolt (age 24) listed as a housekeeper. This is the same Pernecy/Pernica that will marry William Tow (father of James W., Marth Jane, Dollie Rebecca, etc.) within two years. This is also the census we have William's household first listed without first wife Rebecca Lance Tow (having died in 1869). Also the conflict with a "James" age 27 and "Dolly" age 25 in William's household and not sure if James Washington Tow (above) and wife Nancy were somehow counted in William's household as well as their own.

Back to the Garland's, more info for those interested, in the 1880 Census (Coopers Creek District) of Union County, Georgia...

Garland, Caroline, age 55 (she has jumped in age 20 years from previous census), born in NC?
Garland, Mary, age 30
Garland, Elisha, age 30
Garland, Jason, age 22
Garland, Jefferson, age 17
Garland, Marshall, age 9

What's funny is that there wasn't a "Mr. Garland" in the 1870 census or the 1880 census, but Caroline had had a child, Marshall, age 9 who had been born AFTER the 1870 census if that was correct. I wouldn't say we've figured out which one is Dollie's first husband. Are Jasper and Jason the same person? William from 1870 would have been 12, but the other ages are off as well...esp. Caroline's whose age reflects a 20 year difference between 1870-1880.

We know that Dollie R. Garland is listed in the 1880 census as 18 years old (born abt. 1862 which conflicts with the birth info. she gives in 1900 census as 1864) and living in Forsyth County, GA in the household of her sister (Nancy Melinda) who has married Andrew Jackson "A.J." Hite. Nancy and A.J. married in 1871 (when Dollie would have been about 9).

I think the best bets would be Elisha, Jasper/Jason, or Jefferson...but if it's one of them did they divorce Dollie? Did she go to visit or help her sister Nancy and her husband died?

We know that Dollie's sister, Nancy was married in Lumpkin County, Georgia...but I've yet to find Dollie's marriage listed...though I think I've looked in Lumpkin County marriage records. Have also looked in books on Union County, GA marriages..but I know for a fact those books are missing data AND have wrong data. The Tow/Towe surname has been misspelled many times so it's possible it is misfiled...but I have also tried looking up "Garland" and nothing matching.

I'm hoping someone out there in cyberland ties into this line and might have a notation about a Garland relative in Union County, Georgia marrying a Dollie Rebecca Tow.

Thanks in advance!
Tony Pope
Pope1966@aol.com
Re: Towe Family

I am descended through Cage Tow / Towe's father William Tow's first marriage to Rebecca Lance Tow. Cage was descended through Pernecy/Pernecia Elizabeth Seabolt Lunsford1 Tow2, William's second wife. I am one of a group of Tow/Towe researchers working on tracking down descendants in all of William's lines. I am descended through William & Rebecca's son, John Jasper Tow who married Elizabeth Holloway. My line moved out of Union County, Georgia into Gordon County, Bartow County and eventually into Floyd County, Georgia. We have collected a lot of information on William & Rebecca's side, but much of William & Pernecy's (later went by Elizabeth) children have been hard to trace, but I do have some information I was able to find thanks to Darla O'Neil, descendant of Cage. I was recently at a Literature Conference in Athens, Georgia and found nearly 20 Towe names in the phone book I plan to send information to via snail-mail and hopefully make a connection with. Also, I have a copy of Cage's death certificate and information I found via that.

Tony Pope
Pope1966@aol.com
