I just saw your 2001 post. I had a cousin called "Mark" Towell; Marvin Lee Towell 18 September 1893- 14 June 1995. I have solid Towell ancestry through my mother to John F. Towell(1784-1860) of Rowan County, North Carolina. Would you like to swap GEDCOMs? I am willing to swap with anyone who has a surname in one of my lines.

Larry Hayer
2lhayr@gmail.com
Kannapolis, NC

On the 1810 Augusta County census there is a John Towels, Jr with the following members include in his household. One male under 10, One male age 16-25, One male over 45, one female age 16-25 and one female over age 45.

Is it possible that this household is your John J. Towell with his wife and son & his parents, John & Nancy Blair Towell? The ages look right.

There is another Towell on the 1820 census in Augusta County, but I haven't looked to see who it is yet.

Have you contacted the Augusta County Courthouse to see if there were any wills/probate records for either John Towell or Nancy Blair Towell indicating possible children? What about land records in Augusta County? In any of your research on the Towell surname have you come across any possible location for John & Nancy Blair Towell's death, burial, birth or marriage including approximate dates.

I am just starting on my Towell surname and have yet to inquire at the Augusta County Courthouse concerning records for this couple and would appreciate any possible ideas or leads.

Have you come across anymore information pertaining to John Towell & Nancy Blair from Augusta County, VA? I am descended from Margaret Towell Stover of Augusta County, VA. She was born in 1779 in Augusta County, VA. On her death record, it lists she is the daughter of John & Nancy Towell. On her maarriage bond to Jacob Stover in Sept-1800, it also states she was the daughter of John Towell. I have no other information on her parents than what was listed on her death record & her marriage bond. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

I am descended from John J. Towell abt 1784 - abt 1855. He appeared in the 1820 US Census in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1820 with a wife and two children. The wife evidently died because he married Mary "Polly" Bowers in 1823. The 1850 Census shows he was born in Virginia. He may be the son of John Towell and Nancy Blair of Augusta County, Virginia.
My Towell ancestors were also friends or Quakers. My second great grandfather was Issac Towell, born in North Carolina came to Indiana thru Tennesee. He Married Sarah Marshall and when she died leaving 3 children, He married her sister, Amy Marshall. I have some so work on the TOWELL family, I would share with you. My big question is who are Sarah and Amy's
parents. I have William and Elizabeth Marshall(Marshell) Do you know how many William Marshall married and Elizabeth> at Least four. The Quaker records have the sisters with different sets of parents.THe Society of Friends as they like to be called used the same names over and over. On my Hadley branch, I Have a family that a Hadley married a Hadley and 4 of their ten children married Hadleys. I think I have that branch straight. Would love to hear from you.
I am searching for information on the children of Isaac Towell and his ancestors and descendants. He was married twice; first to Mary Whitworth -they purportedly had ten children; second to Artimissa Glass - they had five. I have good supporting evidence for five of the supposed ten children of Isaac and Mary and for four of those of Artimissa Glass. I have at least 8 generations of information to share with any descendants of Margaret Harrison Towell, dau. of Isaac and Mary. I have family pictures and letters from 1870. Anyone interested can contact me at pjordan315866501@aol.com Thanks, Pamela Jordan

surname Towell in Indiana

All the Towells in my family tree came to Indiana from North Carolina.

Most importantly for researchers they were members of the Religious Society of Friends, aka Quaker. My great-grandmother was very proud she was a birth right Quaker

The Friends kept extensive records. I've not seen the Friends mentioned in any post and am suggest mining the society's records would be very helpful to many.

Found a contemporary Irish internet site that stated Towell is a variation of O'Toole. Today the surname is most common in County Waterford.

My records imply that Sarah Dewe married Richard Fowell in Barbados. When Fowel died in 1678, she married Edward Middleton, and they moved to Charles Town, SC.

Sarah Dewe was probably the daugher of Capt. Thomas Dewe & wife Mary (McKenzie?) Thomas Dewe is thought to have died sometime before 1690 in Barbados.

Hi Edward--

You may not even be checking this site anymore, but if so: it seems we have a common great-grandmother in Sarah Emily (Hobbs) Towell. I am her g/granddaughter through her daughter, Opal. For the last several years of her life she stayed with Opal, until her death (3/30/1979, and she was in fact 99); I was 7 when she died and I have some pictures taken with her and memories of her while I was growing up (like she drank Mountain Dew all day long and warm milk before she went to bed, stuff like that). As far as I was told, she was a full-blooded Creek Indian, but I don't think she was registered as such.

Anyway, if you ever get this post and would like to swap info, I'd be happy to.

Andrea

Hi Glenda--

I just recently started doing in-depth internet research on my father's side of the family, and I arrived here b/c your post this past February has the info I was looking for regarding my g/gmother, Sarah Emily (Hobbs) Towell. I couldn't find her maiden name and couldn't recall her husband's name. I am the granddaughter of her daughter, Opal (d. 1998) and Opal's husband, Warren Campbell (d. 1982). I couldn't gather what your connection is, or if you were only responding to someone else's query, but I remember this lady very well and have several pictures of her from when I was a kid. I believe she was full-blooded Creek Indian. She was living with Opal in Eureka, MO, for several years before she died, and I visited them quite often. She died right after I turned 7. I can't really offer any further backwards research but I can give you some lateral and forward information from Sarah E. Towell on.

And all of this info on John Isaac Towell is good to have as well. I couldn't pin down which John Towell he was. I only found him through looking at Ripley, County Missouri Records of marriages. He is listed on 2/9/1898 to "Emma Hobbs" which is I guess what Sarah went by. Very interesting. Anyway, if you'd like to share info, let me know. Andrea
