Hi Jane, I am trying to extend my sister-in-law's Towler ancestry but have very little to go on. Currently I am stuck at her grandfather, Mr William Towler, b.1928 in Jack's Brae, Aberdeen. This is less than a mile from where your relatives lived and I hoped maybe you might know of a link? William joined the army and was stationed in Wiltshire, England where he lived till his death in 2007. I realise you haven't logged on in a while but hope to hear from you when you next do so. Many thanks, Toby.

If you look on line at 1930s WPA project about birth records of slaves (partially available on line search google "Towler slave Pittsylvania" you will find that there were recorded 12 births of slaves belonging to Absolem Towler. They don't give the mother's name as some do just the child's name and year born. Among this list is John Booker ---- b 1856, Elisha b. 1858, Granville b 1858, Charity b 1861, Sam b 1861, Tom b 1861, Read b 1857. etc.
The 1880 census seems better in figuring out these people more so than 1870 census: 1880 census Pigg river district:
John Booker Toler 24 in 1880 census Pigg river district is correct age to be John Booker ----b 1856
Granville Toler 22 is correct age to be Granville b. 1858
next to him is:
Elisha Roberson (male)22 he is the correct age to be Elisha b 1858
Now going on Booker middle name there is in Chatham district:
Booker Toler 35 (near him is Charity Younger 20 who is about the correct age to be Charity b. 1861.

All of this doen't solve Henry Clay Towler (Toler) but the more you figure out. It looks clear that some of Absolem Towler/Toler had the Toler name and some didn't.
In 1880 census there is a Henry Toler 25 farm hand at Callands working for Gerry Mays? Near him is an Anderson Clay 44 & wife and a Dick Toler 30 next to Anderson Clay. Going to 1870 census a Ralph Towler mixed ancestry is adjacent to Benjamin J. Towler (white). (This Benjamin J. is probably related to my dec'd father). Not with Ralph, but on the same page of 1880 census is Henry Towler 12 who seems to be the Henry Toler 25 in 1880 census. I would suspect this Henry is a son of Ralph who being adj to Benjamin J. Towler (white) in 1880 census might be related to Ben J. Towler
The one draw back of all this is this Henry is in Callands/Chatham area.
Other sources of information:
-His m. bond might name parents
-deed to Pigg river land
-Personal property tax records post civil war (at least in Albemarle) have on what farm African-Americans are working if they don't own property. (Men over 21). perhaps Pittsylvania's does also. I have only looked at Albemarle's not Pittslyvania's so I don't know.

Sam Towler

My maternal grandmother was Alice McKay Towler who had 5 children with Bill Robertson (they never married). She also had another child - Walter - I think. I have researched my family tree and have gone back to my great great great grandfather who was a sergeant in the 78th highlanders. Mary Tester is my great great grandmother and her parents were george and Jessie Young. Her husband William Towler was born in 1838 and they lived at 29 Netherkirkgate Aberdeen. They had a son James Towler who married Ann Brown in 1884. I believe They lived at 42 West North Street Aberdeen.

Hope this info is useful.
My Aunt has parish magazines for Settle - several covering most of the 1890's if I recall. Not sure if they cover Giggleswick too. I remember reading them when I was little - very grand leather bound copies!! Tracing the family tree has been on my 'to do' list for years - they still have the little slips of paper I inserted in the births, deaths etc pages. My grandfather was Edwin Towler from Settle - borthers included Henry - my grandfather must have been born between 1870-1880. I am due back to the UK in a couple of weeks and will be visitng my Aunt. If you have any specific names or details from the late 1890's I will try and look things up. Sadly her memory is far from what it used to be but she has good recall of childhood etc - I really should tap into her knowledge as she is my only surving link to a family past.

Re: New Toler/Towler Book

I just have to chime in here, Mr. Toler's book, Following the River Wide and Deep, is 286 pages long, and starts with Charles Towler of the Virginia Company and works its way forward. The primary focus of his book deals with the Toler/Towler's of Virginia (from which I descend), but also talks about the North Carolina Toler clan. The book is well cited, and very well written.

The book is filled with pictures, maps, charts and personal stories. Unlike many books that are written about a particular surname, Ray Toler's book is written as a narrative. The fact that book is written in a narrative style makes it enjoyable and very easy to read.

Unlike some other surnames, there are very few books that have been published on the Towler/Toller/Toler surname, and this is a welcome addition to the few that we do have.

I highly recommend that you visit the site, and consider purchasing a copy of the book.

My great grandmother was Lucy Ellen Kingsnbury Deering. She was married to John Deering. I have some family research my uncle Ferdie Deering did. He tells about Big Aunt Mary Fraim. Her said she was a very large woman. My grandfather was the son of Lucy and John Deering, Norman Henry Deering. My mother was the oldest child of Norman and Hattie Deering. She was born in Gainsville TX. Later they moved to Ada OK where my grandfather opened a butcher shop. He died in 1935 after being kicked in the stomach by a cow. there were 10 children born to Norman and Hattie. My mother was Laura Lucille Deering Brandon. Maybe we are related somehow. If you like I will try to send you what information I have. I do know that John (Johann) Deering and Lucy Kingsberry were married in Louisana. They moved to Boerne TX and bought some land from a relative. I can't remember the man's name right now but he was a Dentist and apparently had money. I would love to hear from you and compare information.
I would like to acquire a little more information on this family. I am working on the Charles Moore Palmer family whose mother is believed to be Elizabeth Kingsbury(C 1805/1810 to sometime after 1870) from New York. She more than likely married a Kingsbury and had at least two Kingsbury children-Lucy Ellen Kingsbury Deering and Mary A. Kingsbury Fraim. Mary A. Kingsbury Fraim was born in Ohio in 1836 as was
Charles Moore Palmer in 1842. Mary A. Kingsbury Fraim died near Silsbee, Texas in the early 1900s. Charles Moore Palmer died in 1914 and is buried in the Guedry Cemetery near Liberty. I know he lived in both Limestone and Liberty Texas.

Thanks,
Nita Keider - nkeider@wildblue.net
Re: George Towler Descendants

Shelagh,
Hi I have a George Alexander Towler (b.1872) and who married a Margaret Eddie Robertson (b.1870) 30th April 1897, Margaret had earlier been married and had a son George Robertson (b.1887) who married Elizabeth Duguid 14th Nov 1913, his second marriage also? Her second marriage with George produced: 1) James Miller Towler b.1898 d.04 May 1899 2)James Kerr George Towler b.1899 d.22 Nov 1899 3)Margaret Davidson Towler b.1900 4)Elizabeth Saunders Towler b.21 Sept 1903. I have George Towlers parents as William Towler (b.1840 d.1918) and Mary Tester (b.1842). I believe George had siblings: John, William, Mary-Jane, Margaret, Robert and I think James (not convinced on that one yet!). John, Robert and William married and I have followed their lines also.
I am currently trying to locate an Elizabeth McGregor (b.1938) - mother Margaret Towler (b.1902 in Aberdeen)and married to James McGregor Nov 1935 (although unlikely to be the father). Know she was born in Edinburgh and may still be there? My father and she share the same mother but have never met so am desperate to find her, my father is now 77 years old and named Norman Towler.
Please contact me if you can help in any way. Many thanks
Jane

We finally found Debra, the birth sister my friend was looking for, but sadly, we just found out that the brother we were searching for passed away on 11-12- 2002, all we know was that it was in Colorado. He was born 11-4-51, can anyone please help locate an obituary for him, and or any living relatives? We also heard that he'd married and had children, but cannot find out any names. William was adopted, and we only recently found out his adopted name, the only name we'd known was his birth name, Guy Lynn Towler, born in OK.

TOWLER-BOYD children adopted out
Hello, I'm helping a friend, Tina locate her half siblings, GUY LYNN TOWLER, b. 11/4/51(we think) in Ada OK, or adopted out there, and DEBRA JEAN TOWLER, b. 7/23/53 in Merced CA., although, because she is younger than Guy, we assume she may have been adopted out of OK. too. The birth parents for the children were CLEBURN SPENCE TOWLER, and HAZEL MARIE (BOYD) TOWLER. I have posted on adoption websites too, so hopefully will find them. I've included some family of the mother, HAZEL BOYD below to see if anyone is related to this family and can shed some light, or atleast let us know what ever happened to HAZEL, as she was divorced from CLEBURN in '54.

HAZEL is related directly to the 4th person on this list, JOHN BOYD and ADELLE YOAKUM, they are her parents. The rest of the people listed are JOHNS' siblings and parents.

Children of MARY KATHERINE WEBB and ALFRED TERRY BOYD are:

1. NEARL EDGAR BOYD was born in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma. He married AMY WILICHCO.

2. ALBERT LEE BOYD was born in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma. He married FRANCES JACKSON.

3. IDA JANE BOYD was born 16 Dec 1905 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma, and died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She married CARL FRANCIS KILE.

4. JOHN ELMER BOYD was born 16 Aug 1907 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma, and died 1924 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma. He married ADELLE YOAKUM.

5. BILL BOYD was born 22 Jul 1910 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma, and died 9 Apr 1934 in Gerty, Hughes County, Oklahoma. He married IMOGENE MANUEL 1933 in Gerty, Hughes County, Oklahoma. She was born 3 Sep 1911 in Huff, Arkansas, and died 9 Apr 1934 in Eric, Oklahoma.

6. DELIA ETHEL BOYD was born 17 Jun 1912 in Stuart, Hughes County, Oklahoma, and died 14 Jul 1992 in Allen, Ponotocs County, Oklahoma. She married VICTOR TROY MANUEL 28 Apr 1933 in Round Pairie, Hughes County, Oklahoma, son of DANIEL JESSIE MANUEL and JENNIE CONNOR AUTEN. He was born 15 Jul 1907 in Independence County, Arkansas.

7. CARL JAMES BOYD was born 25 Dec 1914 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma, and died 1991 in Holdenville, Hughes County, Oklahoma. He married MARGARET LOUISE LOFTIS.

8. HUBERT AL BOYD was born 16 Feb 1917 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma, and died Nov 1917 in Allen, Hughes County, Oklahoma.

Hi Linda
I am researching this family for a friend (as I have time and he doesn't) and George and Isobel are on our tree. Our friend, Rod, is descended from George's brother Robert Towler of Sheepwash b abt 1743 who married Mary Peel. I have looked at the Giddleswick registers and some of the siblings have a baptism date and others do not. I have not been able to find the birth of their father Henry Towler and I think the mother may have been Agnes but I have no proof - can't find a marriage as yet.
Juliet

I have researched back to my 5th Great Grandparents George Towler and Isabel Buck c1749 in Giggleswick, Yorkshire. I would love to here from anyone with a connection. I am particularly interested in George's siblings. Other family names from the same area are Carr and Coats.

John Towler, Army in WW2

Searching for information for a John Towler who had basic training at Ft. McClellan at Anniston, AL in Co. B., 16th Battalion. I don't have any other information other than he enlisted in 1942 and had basic training in Dec. 1942. Based on WW2 enlistment records, possible DOBs in 1900, 1917, or 1919. Possible he worked at Camp Swift in Bastrop, TX before enlistment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
