Since I posted that photo, we've convinced ourselves that the photo is in fact of Aaron and Leslie Town and their girlfriends as indicated in the 1877 diary. Images of three of the four from the 1890s seem to be consistent with the 1877 photo. The girlfriends were Eva A. Palmer and Parthenia Jay. I've put the two diaries (1877 and 1878) on line at these temporary addresses:

http://www.frontiernet.net/~towne56/Town_AaronWard-1877Diary...
http://www.frontiernet.net/~towne56/Town_AaronWard-1878Diary...

They are somewhat dry reading, but they are interesting in a couple of ways. One is that they give the reader a feel for day-to-day life on a farm: the rhythms of the days and the seasons, the planting and the harvests, upkeep of the farm, and delivering produce to market. The other way is that Aaron describes the comings and goings of himself, his family, and visitors of various types, including relatives, friends, and people there and elsewhere for business. They were surprisingly (at least to me) mobile, on some days going one place in the morning, and another in the afternoon, sometimes 10 miles or more at a stretch. There were often meetings, dances, or 'sings' in the evenings.

In the web pages, the pages of the diary are displayed as page images at the bottom of the web page. Click on the diary page to advance.

Does anybody have any data on Jane Johnson Towne daughter of Elihu Towne and Ann Roberts?? I am decendant of Jane.. and yes the family did come to Wood County Ohio and some may be buried around there. Jane was my great great great (do I have the right number of greats?) grandmother.. I am amazed I found you people. please email me at daisyhalo@yahoo.com I sure am relieved to be connected to the family. My grandma's mother died when my grandmother was very young and her dad died when he wss pretty young also leaving her pretty uninformed. I have scratched and turned over rocks to get here.. I'm amazed.

Do you know when Marjorie died? It can get complicated but it's also fun to solve the puzzles. Come to think of it, I was in NYC at the historical society looking at old city directories last year and I don't know why I didn't look for her name. I had a long list of others but didn't think to look for Marjorie. But I found lots of info on others I looked up. Do you know if Marjorie had any children with John Semple? Good luck with all your searches.

It was ever thus. In the old days the majority did not know how to write their name and relied on the better educated to write it down for them and they wrote down what they heard."Correct" spelling was far less important then than survival.Different writing could produce a flourish at the end of the name that could look like a final "e" or "s" and so a change is born.
Unfortunately many researchers take no note of this; insist on the accuracy of their family name, and spurious family trees are the result.

For what it's worth -- my father was one of 4 brothers born in the early 20th century, descendants of Wm Towne, who arrived in MA about 1635. 300 yrs later, my father & 1 uncle were Townes, & my other 2 uncles were Towns. My grandfather & great-grandfather were (mostly) Towns, but the spelling has varied thru all the generations since Wm Towne arrived from Great Yarmouth in the 17th century.

obit for Howard Elson Towne, born 1867 Michigan, died 1936 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, April 16, 1936, page 10:
HOWARD ELSON TOWNE
Howard Elson Towne was born January 16, 1867, in Saginaw, Michigan, and departed this life April 9, 1936, at his home, six miles northwest of Tescott, Kansas, at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 24 days.
His mother passed on to the other world when he was eight years of age. He then made his home for six years with an aunt in New York state. From that time on he made his own way through life. Having to shift for himself at so early an age he acquired a very active and self-reliant personality. At the age of 18, he came to kansas, living first at Delphos, later at Minneapolis, where he had employment with the Santa Fe railway which was extending its lines west of Minneapolis.
He was married on April 29, 1887, to Miss Eva Wormser, of Ada, Kansas. To this union eight children were born. His wife and two sons, Lawrence and Robert, preceded him in death. Those left to mourn his loss are his sons and daughters, Claude Towne, of Oak Park, Ill., Mrs. Harry Beichley, of Ada, Kans., Mrs. Harry Pierce, of Tescott, Kansas, Jay and Eugene Towne, of Cresswell, Oregon, and Clara Towne, of the home. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. John Morrison of Chicago, and by ten grandchildren, and by a number of other relatives and many friends.
He was a member of the Antioch church, of Ada, for many years, later transferring his membership to the First Baptist church of Beverly, Kansas.
The funeral was conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30, at the Community church, Beverly, by Rev. A.W. Lee, pastor of the Baptist church, Ada, and Rev. Flood, pastor of the Beverly Community church. Burial was in the Beverly cemetery.

Do you have any information regarding descendants of Elihu Ford, grandson of Elihu Towne? His father was Daniel D. Ford and his mother was Caroline Towne, daughter of Elihu Towne and Ann Roberts. The last information I have gleaned shows Caroline living in Woods, Ohio in 1860 with her son Elihu and her father, Elihu Towne. The post from Lloyd Marshall tells me he married Laura J Harper. I would love to know if there were any descendants as Elihu is a lost member of my great grandfather's family.

Hello,

I am looking for anyone who has access to the Towne Family Association newsletter from, I believe, 1982. There should be an article in there about the family of Samuel Clark and Mercy/Marcy Towne. If possible, I'd like to know which sources are cited in the article, other than the Sutton Vital Records. Specifically, I would be interested in knowing what ties Elijah Clark of Hollis, NH to Samuel Clark of Sutton. If anyone can provide me with a quick summary, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

The Descendants of William Towne ... by Edwin Eugene Towne says that Samuel Towne b 10 Feb 1809 was "said to have settled in Michigan". He was son of Daniel Towne and Susan Evans; had brothers Mark and Oka. Daniel died in 1814. All same source.

Daniel was son of Israel Towne and Lydia Hopkins
Israel was son of Israel Towne and Grace Gardner
Israel was son of Joseph Towne and Margaret Case
Joseph was son of Joseph Towne and Phebe Perkins
Joseph was son of William Towne and Joanna Blessing

The Towne Family Association is an excellent resource for this family. For $15 dues you get 4 excellent quarterlies that provide lots of history about Townes of interest.

You do know that 3 of William Towne's daughters were accused during the Salem Witch Hysteria, don't you?
Found information on son of Evero. Warren Pillsbury Towne died 18 July 1904 Albany Maine of "cholera morbas". Albany Maine Vital Records, LDS microfilm. My grandfather was Frederick Towne, brother of Evero. I believe Evero was visiting Fred in Albany. Also, I have an entire photo album belonging to another brother, Sidney Towne, but no photos are identified (other than Clara Bow!). Would love to see if any can be identified, do you have any older photos of that generation that we might be able to match up? Thanks - Judith

Asher Nathan and Emma Neuenschwander Towne (s/o Zera and Nancy Townsend Towne)

Zera and Nancy had children: Loren and Asher Nathan Towne.
Asher and Emma had children: Jesse, George, Seth and Hazel. The following is a request for info regarding Seth and Jesse.

I am looking for information on Richard M. Sheppard. He is listed on the 1930 Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington Census as a nephew of Jesse N. and Grace M. Snow Towne. He was 2 years and 5 months of age. Also listed were another nephew, Robert C. Towne (5 yr) and niece Betty L. Towne (4 yr. 3 mo) and Grace's mother Elizabeth Snow. Robert and Betty were children of Seth Towne. (Seth and Jesse were brothers) I believe his wife was Laura Maxwell. At the time the census was taken Seth was living in Everett, Snohomish Co., Washington. He had another child, Hazel, who was not listed on the census with Jesse. Seth died in Nov. 1930. I cannot connect Richard to anyone. I don't have much on Grace and thought maybe he could be a nephew through her, if not through the Towne family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I didn't prove anything definitive on the sons of Truman P Town, so I guess this is my last installment. I'd love to know the results after you write for the death certificate on Elma. I hope it shows parents for her.

OK, I'm starting to rethink some of the research. Matilda is pushing the limits of age to be the mother of Elma, and th Louisiana thing isn't fitting, so here's what I've done since the last post.

On ancestry.com:
Minnesota Death Index, 1908-2002
Name: Mrs Truman Poland Town
Death Date: 21 Feb 1915
Death County: Lyon
State File Number 006838
Certificate Number: 006838
Certificate Year: 1915
Record Number: 162049

Wisonsin Marriages pre-1907:
Name: Truman Town
Marriage Date: 6 Apr 1854
County: Dane
Volume 01
Page 0228
[ this could be the same Truman Town as 2 of his children in the 1870 census show WI as birthplace]

US General Land Office Records 1796-1907
Truman Town
Issue Date: 10 Nov 1855
State of Record: Wisconsin
Acres: 120
Accession Number: WI2200_.027
Metes and Bounds: No
Land Office: Mineral Point
Canceled: No
Reservations:
Mineral Reservations: No
Authority: April 24, 1820; Sale-Cash Entry (3 Stat. 566)
Documnet: 19712
Legal Land Description:
Sec 33 Twp 8-N Range 6-E Meridian 4th PM-1831 MN/WI Counties: Dane
Sec 34 Twp 8-N Range 6-E Meridian 4th PM-1831 MN/WI Counties: Dane

The Truman P Town that was married to a Matilda served in the Minnesota Infantry (B8) during the Civil War.
1909 Jany? * Widow Application No 911215 Minnesota

Civil War Pension Index:
Town, Truman P
B8 Minn Inf
1874Nov 9 Invalid 197.388 Certif: 294.665

Minnesota Civil War Soldiers:
town, Truman P Pvt
Age 40
Induction Date: 11 Nov 1862
Birthplace: Vermont
Town of Residence: Sargeant
County of Residence: Rice
State of Residence: Minn
Notes: Disc for Disability
Discharge Date: 10 Apr 1864

US Civil War Soldiers 1861-1865
Truman P Town
Side: Union
Regiment: Minnesota
Regiment Name: 8 Minnesota Infantry
Regiment Name: 8th REgiment, Minnesota Infantry
Company: B
Rank In: Private
Rank in Expanded: Private
Rank out: Private
Rank out expanded: Private
Film Number: M546 roll 9

From footnote.com:
Civil War Pension Index: Infantry, Infantry, Regiment 8, company B:
He died 8 Dec 1908
Truman P Town
1874 Nov 9, 1907 Mar 8 Invalid 197.388 age certif# 294.665
1909 Jan 8 Widow 911.215 a

11th census of the US 1890
Schedules enumerating Union Veterans and widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War
In Galso and Springdale, county of Redwood Minnesota in June 1890
House No 66; Family 66: Truman P Town Rank: Private, company B, Name of Regiment or Vessel: B Minnesota ??; Enlistment: 1862; Discharged: 1863: Length of Service: 10 Months; Post Office Address: Walnut Grove Minnesota.

1860 Shieldsville, Rice county MN Census
120 114 Town, T P 37 m farmer 1000 250 VT
, Matilda 26 f NY
, Benj 8 m Wis
, Josephine 6 f Wis
, Fred 4 m MN
, Eda C 2 f MN
, Jane 1 f MN

Truman and Matilda were supposedly married in 1854 in Dane County Wisconsin; however, Benjamin is shown as 8 years old in 1860.

Matilda's in the 1850 Dane County Wisconsin census born in New York around 1833 are:
Matilda Williamson in Blooming Grove
Matilda Lawrence in Farmersville

The book "Town Family" by E E Towne 1901 lists the family of Truman P Town under it's "UNKNOWN" section - as far as how they relate to William and Joanna Blessing Towne. That section of the book shows Truman with the children I've listed in the census records above, but shows him as being born in Canada. It also shows his father as Salem Town.
The information given in the book on Salem is:
Salem Towne b. at Waterbury Vt. m. Rachel Poland, dau of Asa Poland at WAterbury, Vt, where she was b. Their children:
Electa b. at WAterbury, VT
Daniel b at Waterbury VT
Albert b at Waterbury VT
George b at Waterbury VT
Statiria b at Waterbury VT
Truman P b at Granb Sheffield County Canada
Ada b at Granby Sheffield County Canada
Mary b at Granby Sheffield County Canada
Hannah b at Granby Sheffield County Canada
Salem b at Granby Sheffield County Canada

The book has a whole section on this family, and shows the children of Truman being born in Wisconsin etc, so it's the same family I've been following. The book shows a daughter, Edna, born in 1883 and does not list an Elma - that 1886 birthdate is a problem with the 1890 census missing, although the Alma living with them in the 1900 census is interesting - even though the date is "off".

If Matilda was born in March 1835 and Elma was not born until 1886, that looks like Matilda would have been too old to be her mother (age 51). It's possible, but not probable. Maybe Elma is the granddaughter of Truman and Matilda. I'll start going through the sons of Truman and Matilda to see if there is an Elma... It would have to be George, Fred or Benjamin, as Truman, Lee and Albert are too young to have a daughter born in 1886.... BUT, Elma lists her father's birthplace as Vermont and her mother's as NY, and those sons of Truman were born in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
In the 1930 census, Elma shows NY as her father's birthplace and Louisiana as her mothers.
In the 1920 census she shows VT and Louisiana
In 1910 she shows Iowa and Iowa.
SO, all we know is that she's PROBABLY related in some way to Truman Town, as his daughter and granddaughter attended Elma's funeral.

1910 Tracy Ward 1 District 94, Lyon County Minnesota Census
9 9 Town, Matilda head f w 73 wd 13 11 NY NY NY ?income

Also in Lyon count MN in 1910 is:
1910 Tracy Ward 2 District 94, Lyon Co MN
Morgan Street West
112 117 Town, George head m w 42 m1 22 MN VT PA salesman confectors store
, Eleanor wife f w 41 m1 22 4 4 IL VT NY
, Louis son m w 21 s MN MN IL
, Frederick son m w 17 s MN MN IL
, Roy G son m w 15 s MN MN IL
, Cora? M dau f w 12 s MN MN IL
IF this is George, son of Truman and Matilda, he's NOT the father of Elma, as he and wife had only 4 children, and they're all listed here.

There is also an Alir? R Town in the same county, but he's from Indiana (looks like Jndina)

I think I may have found her parents. I found an obituary for Elma on ancestry.com. I traced some of the people who came in from out of town for the funeral from Minnesota. Mrs W R Barnes and Mrs Clarence Hillig turned out to be Nettie Town and Alice Town. Tracing these folks, it looks like Elma may be a sister to these woman. If that's the case, then the parents of these women are: Truman P Town and his wife Matilda. Writing for a death certificate for any of these women might help prove the name of the parents. Truman was born in Vermont and so were his parents. I'll post what I've found since my last post.
TOWNE vs TOWN - same family, names spelled differently

Does anyone know about this name? I have Zera Town and Warren S Town whom I think is his brother. Warren was born 1828-1829 in NY and Zera, July 1831 in NY. They married sisters in Illinois.(Warren married Susan Ann Townsend and Zera married Nancy Ann Townsend.) Some of the descendants of these people started spelling their name as Towne. I am not sure which is the correct spelling. Some of the descendants ended up in California and some in Washington State.

I too would like info on Hattie and Samuel Long. Have you found out anything? I can give you tons of info on the family (Townsend connection) beginning with Loren and working back but nothing on Hattie and Samuel. Loren's great grandfather (Daniel Townsend who married Pricilla Peterson) and my great, great, great, great grandmother Rachel Townsend (who married Aaron Shaw) were brother and sister. Hattie is my 4th cousin twice removed.

I have just finished the book by Ruth Warner Towne, which is less than complimentary to the above mentioned, Myron Stewart Towne. I find there are several errors in this book regarding my own family, which married into the Towne family, and would like to hear more about Myron's branch from one of his descendants. Thank you.

Samuel Town(e), Oka's Brother?

I've been unable to find any information on the parentage of Samuel Town(b. 1809 NH). He moved to Southwest Michigan around the same time as Oka Town(b. 1806 NH). I found out from another thread that Daniel Town(b. 1774 NH) was the father of Oka. I'm almost sure that they are brothers, but I suppose they could also be cousins. If anyone could help, that would be great.

Does anyone have any leads about Reverend William Towne DD who was born 1762 and died in 1829. His wife was Catherine Choppin and they never emergrated to America. I am hoping to find more information about his parents, I know his brother Reverend Thomas Towne of Royston and the children of both families, please could anyone inform me of Thomas and William's parentage?

Hello, I had posted over at the TOWN board but should have posted here too.

My husband is from the line of Grover Town. Grover's daughter Alice is my husband's grandmother. This is a direct line from Edmund. See below:

Edmund Town b 1628, married Mary Browning
son Joseph b 1661, married Amy Smith 1687
son Nathan b 1693 @ Topsfield, married Phebe Curtis
son Jonathan b 1724 @ Boxford MA, married Esther Gould 1751
son Asa b 1770 @ Oxford, married Sally Frazier 1792?
son Aaron b 1794 @ York, NY, married Lucina Harvey
son Martin H. b 1821 @ Arkwright NY, married Caroline Smith 1856?
son Edgar Martin b 1859 @ Arkwright NY, married Alice Persons 1882
son Grover b 1885, married Lottie Spurr
daughter Alice b 1915 married Charles Williams

I believe many are still in NY. Alice and Charles went to CA and some of us are now up in WA state.

Alice Town is still alive at age 93. I believe her younger brother Earl is still living as well.

Re: Marjorie Rhodes Towne Semple

Sorry, I don't have much more info than what I posted. She married John Semple in 1934 and by 1942 his enlistment record says he is separated. Recently found his obituary which says he had a son John and a few grandchildren but we are not certain if son John is by wife Marjorie. Do you know when she died? Also might want to check if she has a passport application which will have photo and some info though they only go up through 1925 as yet. We found a photo of John Semple that way. Good luck. If I find anything new, I'll pass it along.
