John William Trattle

Hi - interesting to see messages about Trattle- I've been struggling to find out about this name.

My husband's grandfather had a half brother, John William Trattle b c1883 Portsea Island. His mother was Mary Ann Savage, but don't know about the Dad. He was born before Mary Ann married William Puchase, so may have been illegitimate. I wonder if the father was John Trattle on 1889 census- 58 yrs old, a naval pensioner, living in Portsea Island as a boarder at 7 Peel Place.

Can anyone throw any light on this John Trattle??

Thanks

Fiona

Hello there everyone
I have just found this message board and have yet to fully read all your messages with great interest!
My mother Edna TRATTLES(still living) was born in Middlesbrough, Cleveland (Nth Yorkshire at the time-1926), married George SANDERSON (M'bro 1925-1988)
Her father John James TRATTLES (b. Stockton - 1890), married Olive PERCIVAL (b. M'bro 1900)
His father (My great grandfather) John TRATTLES
b. "Steers"/Staithes 1846), married Frederica Sophia BRADLEY (b. Richmond -1857)
This is where my problem begins! - Which John is this - I have done a fair bit of searching, to no avail....any ideas welcome.
I have attempted to compile a database of all Trattles from IGI / Census / Parish Records etc....as probably many of you may have done....I now have over 1400 names and will now try and see where you all fit in from your notes.
Look forward to hearing from you all

My Great-grandfather was aTrattles

I'm looking for any information on Laban Eldorus Trattles. He was born on April 16, 1856 in Three Rivers, Michigan. He married Phoebe Jane Gillson on July 23, 1882. He died in Sauk Centre, Minnesota on September 20, 1910. The only other information I have is that his father was Joseph Trattles from England that married Maria (Anna) Jones on October 16, 1851. My grandmother, Mabel Madora Trattles, told my mother that a relative of hers was a coachman for the Queen of England when their family lived in England. Any help out there? I'd love to hear from you!

trying to contact Tony Trattles re John Trattles

Hello,

This message was originally for Tony Trattles with regard to his research on John Trattles, but it seems that there might be other people on this board who would be interested in the topic as well.

I am a history professor at the University of Washington, researching a new project on color blindness in British workers. I have become fascinated by the case of John Trattles and his difficulties with the Board of Trade. From my point of view, the episode is a particularly interesting episode of government and medical or scientific authority versus an individual mariner.

Thus far, my research has been limited to "official" sources - mostly Parliamentary debates or reports in _The Times_. But I am certain that these sources do not reveal the whole story, and I am hoping that someone here might know of a way to fill in Trattles' own interpretations. At the least, I would be delighted to interview anyone who has family recollections about this case.

I have tried to reach Mr. Tony Trattles at tratts36@hotmail.com but the email keeps bouncing back to me. Is there a new address, or other people on this list interested in this topic?

I would be happy to share more details of my research. Thanks to all of you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Jordanna Bailkin
History Department
University of Washington

bailkin@u.washington.edu
