No doubt I could help you. I put together most of the core that got you where you are now. Try the local historical society or library. A well thought out post would include a donation of approx. $15 but Jim... you would know that. We talked about this on many occasions. Send a few bucks to the local historical society or library and you will have your answer.

Treadway Cemeteries In/Around Lee Co, KY?

I know someone on this forum has mentioned finding burial places for Treadways in and around Lee Co - especially in the Beattyville area, I believe. I'll be going to the Red River Gorge area soon, and would love to be able to find the burial place of some of my ancestors. Especially interested in finding the place where Thomas Jefferson Treadway and Demandia/Demia Lutes Treadway are buried.

Can anyone help with this?

Hello again Jim,

By the way, I am very curious as to how you were able to connect me and my aunt Odessa from this site for the Treadway side of my life? My Mother and her sister Odessa's maiden names were Owens, which is the surname that my Mother gave me when I was born, since she was never married to my biological Father, Eldridge Treadway. You seem to be a really good sleuth at your hobby. I am really impressed and I feel that I should enlist you to help me locate some of his living relatives. I would really like to meet and get to know some of that side of my blood line before we all get too old. I am still working full time and never seem to have time to do much investigating online.

Looking for information about Okey Treadway. His father is Charles Elmer and grandfather Joseph Treadway. Can anyone help me locate his death certificate (date & obituary)? He was listed as a farmer in the 1930 census and wondered if he worked at the Morgan County Infirmary. Any information appreciated.

You will see your father's family and click on that. Tell me how it goes. I think it goes back about 1800. One more click . Click on Aftenal, and it will how how far the family goes back.
Re: Thomas Jefferson Treadway (b. 1821, Lee Co, Ky) - Two Mysteries

I obtained some information today that, in my view, raises serious questions about Thomas Jefferson being the son of Moses Treadway and Mary Catherine Dewitt.

I obtained a copy of the marriage bond for Thomas Jefferson and his second wife, Armina Barrett from the Lee County, KY Clerk. Thomas Jefferson and Armina married on 14-DEC-1892. This was Thomas Jefferson's second marriage at the age of 71. Armina's age is listed as 27. Unfortunately, it doesn't list the names of the parents of the groom or bride. But, it lists their places of birth. The groom's father was born in Montgomery County, KY. The groom's mother was born in Clark County, KY. According to the best information I have found regarding Moses and Mary Catherine, their places of birth were MD and VA, respectively.

The marriage bond indicates that the marriage ceremony took place at "Moses Roberts", presumably the home of Moses Roberts. The ceremony was officiated by J.M. Roberts and was witnessed by Moses Roberts and Peter Barrett, Armina's father. Thomas Jefferson and Peter Barrett signed the marriage bond as principal and surety, respectively (Peter made a mark "X", which was noted and his name filled in.)

"The Descendants of Moses Treadway" was written in the 1930's, about 30 years after Thomas Jefferson died. According to that document, much of the information was obtained from William T. Treadway, who was Thomas Jefferson's grandson. William T's father, Wiliam M., was alive at the time of the document's writing. Both of them were old enough to have personally known Thomas Jefferson. So, it's hard to believe that this document would be incorrect. Moses would have been William M's grandfather and William T's g-grandfather. I have to believe they were close enough to the Moses Treadway generation to have known that they were descended from Moses. But, was it "The" Moses Treadway who was married to Mary Catherine?

My theory (which I can't prove at this time) is that Moses and Mary Catherine may have had a son, Moses "Jr." who would have been the father of Thomas Jefferson, or that one of Moses' brothers had a son named Moses.

BTW, I was able to recently obtain records from the National Archives pertaining to Thomas Jefferson's service for a Kentucky regiment on the side of the Union during the Civil War. Aside from the fact that it verifies Thomas Jefferson's service in the Civil War, it verifies his date of birth as 01-FEB-1821. This is on a medical document signed by him. I have seen several different DOB's for him.

I've raised more questions than answers. I hope we can solve this mystery soon.

Harold Damron

I hope someone can help me, my gggrandmother was Nancy Jane Treadway, she was married to John Scott Young. I first find them together in the 1870 census in twp. 12 in Calhoun County in Alabama post office Ladiga.

John Young 53
Nancy Young 30

then in the 1880 census they are in Cherokee County Alabama they have 3 sons

James Matthew Young 14
William Josh Young 10
John Harland Youing 4 months

I have Nancy's obit - she died June 03, 1903 at the age of 58, she is buried in Rome Georgia. I run into problems on the Treadway sites that have Nancy married to Thomas Young, this is not true. The other problem is her father is listed as Ezekiel Treadway son of Daniel and Mary Buffington. I have Nancy with her father James M. Treadway in the 1860 Floyd Springs District in Floyd County Georgia her mother and her brothers. Nancy named her sons after her father and her brothers.

Where I need help is on the Treadway web site they have Ellis and Ezekiel Treadway son's of Daniel with the same children and wife. I think that Nancy's grandfather is Ezekiel and not Ellis from the naming in her family - Ezekiel is found in my family tree but no Ellis but I have no real proof, can anyone help me? thanks Jim Young

Well done, Harold. This is a tough nut to crack, apparently. I think one of your theories must be correct: that TJ Treadway is indeed descended from Moses Treadway, just not the Moses Treadawy born in MD.

How to prove that is, however, something I don't know.

Please email me if you have any information that you could share with me on my great grandfather Fletcher Treadway. I am the daughter of Betty Gene Treadway, Ruthie Mae's daughter. My mother Betty, and her mother Ruthie Mae have both died. I have been told that my grandmother Ruthie Mae has a sister, Georgia Lee. Not for sure if she is still alive.

Hi SueBee,

Do you have some kind proof that Benjamin Franklin Treadway (married Esther Neil) is the son of John & Onijah Holt Treadway?

Another message I've seen online was that he was the son of Unwed mother Elizabeth Treadway. Thanks. Best regards, Jim
