Hi Tony

Good to hear from you again.

Last summer I went down to Somerset where all the Treasures originate from and had a look around. All the little villages are still there although the coal mines are long gone. In Radstock there's a very interesting coal mining museum - the conditions in which our ancestors worked were really appalling - Goodness knows how so many of them lived to such a ripe old age!

I'm not sure if you've found my tree but you can access it at
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/r/e/Richard-P-T...

Help yourself to any stuff you need and don't hesitate to contact me at richardandannetreasure@hotmail.com if you think I can help

All the best

Richard T

Leroy Treasure arrived in the USA from Wales at the age of 4 on 14 April 1908 on board the good ship Cymric in the port of Boston, having sailed from Liverpool. He was accompanied ny his mother?, Alice aged 37.
This particular twig of the Treasure family had moved to Wales from Somerset to open the mines at Blaenavon.

I'm not sure how we're related but we probably are.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for that interesting bit of history on the Treasures and mining in Somerset and Wales. That paralells my husbands ggggrandfather Edward George Treasure who was a coal miner, born in England most likely Somerset. Sometime after he married Elizabeth (last name unknown) we believe he went to Wales to work and from there to the U.S. George and family left Newport, Wales, on the Barque Tiberias. The Passenger List was produced at the Custom House at Newport on 31 June 1838. They arrived at the port of Baltimore on 10 Sep 1838 as part of a group bound for George's Creek Coal and Iron Company in Allegany Co. Maryland. When he filed a declaration of intent to become a citizen in 1839 in Allegany Co. he gave his nationality as English though all the other miners he sailed with were Welsh. His oldest son, William T., was born 11 Jun 1817 in England but was said to have spoken Welsh. Besides William, the other children were Job, Ann, Susanna, John, Hannah & Caroline. From Maryland, most of these Treasures eventually moved on to the coal mines of Pennsylvania.

Do these Treasures fit in with any of those bits and pieces you have collected? So far I have been unable to connect them to anyone.

Your message caught my eye as it contains two of my family names. Are your Treasures from Somerset? I have a gggrandmother, Jane Treasure b. 1853, Coleford, Somerset, daughter of Francis Treasure and Ann (?). And I have a ggggrandfather, Leonard Denmead Padfield, b. 1828, Leigh on Mendip, Somerset, son of Henry Padfield and Sarah. Do any of these people fit into your Padfield or Treasure family? Thanks

OBIT: Passing Of J. Thomas Treasure ~ born near Louisville, Kentucky
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 23, 1908

The Ledger is pained to learn of the death of J.T. TREASURE, a former resident of Whitebreast Township. He was born near Louisville, Kentucky, February 11, 1848 and died at his home two miles southeast of Kirksville, Mo. on Tuesday, April 14, 1908. He had been in declining health for about three years but confined to his bed only a week.

He leaves a wife, three sons and four daughters -- one son, WILL, preceding
him to the grave three years ago. he was laid to rest as was his desire, in
Highland Park Cemetery, a mile from the family home, on Thursday, April 16.

MR. TREASURE grew to manhood in the State of Missouri, but in his early
manhood he and young wife located in Jackson Township, Monroe County, later
purchasing a farm in Whitebreast Township where the family resided until
moving to Kirksville, Mo. He was an honest, upright citizen and ever did a
neighbor's part in the community in which he dwelt. These sterling
characteristics form a better monument to his memory than mere words of
eulogy on marble shafts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
February 13, 2005
iggy29@rnetinc.net
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm
posted at this site with Nancee's permission.
Hi there Tony Treasure,

You mentioned in your message board posting that your brother was David Treasure - the RL footballer - didn't he play for Bradford Northern? Anyway when my first son was born my wife and I struggled for a suitable name - until she proposed David - I remembered at that point that there'd been a David played in the RL Cup Final and it sounded OK - so we called him David - just thought your bro might like to know
Cheers Richard Treasure

Gary Newsum

The Treasures were originally coalminers, working the Somerset coalfield in England from the earliest days of the Industrial revolution. The mines in Somerset were notoriously difficult to work , the seams of coal often were no more than 14 inches thick but nevertheless they earned a good living from it. Most of their children were educated to the ages of 14 or so and most survived their infancy. Some Treasures were sent to Wales where they helped to develop the South Wales Coalfield. A good many of them also emigrated to the USA where again they seemed to go wherever there was a mine to dig. Pennsylvania, Colorado, Claifornia and Kentucky - anywhere there was mining. The same applied to Australia and South Africa. I've done a lot of work on the family and now I must put all the pieces of the family jigsaw together

Hi Debra
I'm Richard Treasure of Lincoln UK. The furthest back I've managed to get (at the moment - although a trip to Somerset and the records office is planned) is John Treasure (1680) who married a Sarah and had a least one child Samuel (1702) who married margaret Densley they had at lest one son, Jonathan who married Dianna they had 2 sons Isaac (1770) and Reuben (1759)

Where do Levi and Tobias fit into this - or maybe they don't?

It seems that most Treasures worldwide stem from Somerset in England. To date we have got back to 1680 and John and Sarah Treasure.

Any information you may have about JTT's ancestors or descendants would be gratefully received

Richard Treasure, Lincoln, England

VESTA DENNISON died in the hospital at Omaha, on Monday, April 19 at 2
o'clock p.m., after an illness of nine weeks. Her death was caused by blood
poison. Had she lived until July 15th, she would have been 21 years of age,
and been married only a little over a year.

Her remains were taken to Kirksville, Mo., the home of her mother, MRS. MARY
TREASURE, for interment, reaching there on Tuesday of last week. She was
the daughter of MR. and MRS. THOMAS TREASURE, formerly of Whitebreast
Township. Thus, a young life has gone out, which a short time since was
filled with promise and the natural gladness of hearts has turned to
mourning.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
June 29, 2005
iggy29@rnetinc.net
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm
posted at this site with Nancee's permission
