Godefroi Tremblay married Rose de Lima Bruneau on 30 Apr 1872 in Ste. Angele de Merici, Quebec. They had one child baptized in Ste. Angele de Merici, Joseph Ferdinand who was born 23 Jan 1873 and was buried 22 Sep 1873. Godefroi and Rose appear in the 1881 Census, living in Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur, Rimouski, Quebec, with three additional children: Marie Rose, born abt. 1875, Marie, born abt. 1877 and Joseph, born abt. 1879. Parish baptism records not found for these children and, so far, no further census, or parish records found for this family. Any help appreciated.

A little bit of extra information, in case anyone can help me:

I now know that Exina Savoie was the wife of Philias for certain. I also now know that he was born Jan 15, 1865 in St. Alban's, Vermont.

This information is from an old obituary that was kindly provided to me.

Anyone else have anything on this?

Thanks,
Christopher J.
Philias/Phillip/Felix Tremblay

Hello,

I'm trying to trace my Tremblay side back into Canada, and I've gotten stuck at my GG grandfather. My grandfather was Raymond Tremblay, son of Lucien Tremblay, son of Philas/Phillip/Felix Tremblay.

Philias had a son, Philias Jr., who is often seen listed as Felix Jr., and so I've included the Felix as a possible name.

Philias was born in 1865 in Vermont, according to several census records. He died in Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1947. His wife's name was Exina (maiden name was possibly Savoie, born in Canada; I have no information on her either).
I have no information about his parents or siblings, though I'm willing to bet that Philias's parents are likely from Canada. I have him on the 1900 and 1910 US censuses, but that is it.

If anyone can find out any other information, no matter how little, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Christopher J. Thibeault
Woonsocket, RI
Jean-Baptiste Tremblay m. Marguerite LaRose

Hi, I'm looking for help with this couple. It may be Jean-Baptiste's second marriage. Their one confirmed daughter's birth is Elizabeth TREMBLAY, b. Nov 1858-1861 in Moose Creek, Stormont Co. Ontario. Elizabeth was married in Sept 1882 in Embrun, Russell Co. ONT (confirmed) to Francois ASSELIN.

J.Bpt (54 y.o.) might be in the 1871 Roxborough/Stormont co census; online is only the Head/Stray index. And I think it might be him (widowed) in the 1851-52 (37 y.o.)Charlottesburgh/Glengarry census co.

Also, the LaROSE name looks fairly "popular" in the history of Embrun. And a witness named at Elizabeth's marriage was "Hormisdas SIGOUIN", another name with a little history in that area.

Any help at all would be most appreciated to help me unwind these confounded branches! Lynne :)
What is the source of your statement that the Tremblay family are the largest single family in North America? Is this referring only to people living today? Is this referring only to people who have retained the TREMBLAY surname? According to PRDH (U. of Montreal) the name TREMBLAY is 19th in frequency from 1629-1799. Thus I would expect that the surname ROY (of which there are numerous dit variations), which was the most frequent from 1629-1799, would be larger.

What are the sources used in these books? Do they give the information about where to find the documents? For example, what is the source documentation for information about Philbert Tremblay and Jeanne Coignet, parents of Pierre (b. 1626; first Tremblay in Quebec)? What is the source of a death date for Pierre Tremblay?

Books are not considered "documented sources" themselves. The only documented sources that are reliable are vital records, church records, wills, property records, etc., written contemporaneously with the event. Secondary sources for records that far back are acceptable. However, any posting on the internet of any genealogy should be considered an unverified "clue" unless source documentation information is provided, and should never be used as a "source" when passing on information.

Regards,
Sharyn Hay
TREMBLAY Message Board Administrator

Since we do not know how old you are or when your father was born, it is hard to figure out where to start looking for your grandparents. So, here's what we need to know - approximate birth dates and locations, marriage dates and locations for your parents and grandparents (any living people may be omitted), and names of your grandparents' children with approximate birthdates. Women's maiden names are very important.

Most searches start with census, marriage, birth, and death, records. These are found by approximate year and *location*. Thus, that information is very important in order for anyone to help you.

Regards,
Sharyn

It sounds to me like you need to begin at the beginning, starting with yourself, and work backward. That is how genealogy has to be done to be successful.

First, obtain your own birth certificate.

Second, obtain your parents' marriage license and a copy of the divorce decree.

Third, interview all known relatives and find out as much as you can, especially names of all members of your father's and mother's families and their father and mother's families.

Fourth, if these are the correct persons, obtain a copy of their Social Security applications, birth, death, and marriage certificates:

Lawrence Tremblay born 12 Oct 1893; died Jan 1965; last residence Buffalo, Erie, New York; issued in New York (Before 1951 ) SSN 133-10-3690

Clifford L. Tremblay born 16 Nov 1928; died 10 Jul 2000; last residence Buffalo, Erie, New York; issued New York (Before 1951 ) SSN 086-20-3362

Regards,
Sharyn

I found a record that looks like it could be yours.

According to the Drouin, there was a Antoine Gadbois who married Aurelie Tremblay November 16, 1852 in St-Urbain-Premier, county of Chateauguay, Quebec. Her parents were Magloire Tremblay and Catherine Bezier (married in Longueuil in 1831). His parents were Antoine Gadbois and Louise Pitre (looks like that anyways).

I hope this helps.
Steve Rock
srock@saurette.com

Would like to hear from your grandmother

Thanx for such a quick reply. I'd sure be interested to hear what your Grandmother knows. I think I remember my Mother, who by the way - is also named Rosanna, saying something about Chesterville (?) or somewhere like that. I remember we took a ride up to Canada when i was a child and we visited my Great Grandmother's grave. She is buried in Rouses' Point. Not sure if that is actually NY or Canada? I know it is right on the border. We did go into Canada to visit relatives but there wasn't any conversation on myself and my brother's part as we don't speak French...lol. My Grandfather was fluent in French so he had a great time!! Anyway, to name a few of my Great Grandmother's children besides my Grandfather (Andrew) there was Harry, Rose, Bertha, Lena, Antoinette, William, and Larry. I believe there were a few that died as a very young age also. Maybe your Grandmother will remember some of these names. I also believe Larry had a different Mother than my Great Grandmother Rosanna. Anyway, thatnx for such a quick reply and i look forward to hearing from you. Thanx.......Patty
