Does anyone know anything about him?

It appears he married my Aunt Ethel Schoettner because in the 1930 census, he is listed as married to her.

Other than that, I cannot find any record of him.

There were Tribe clockmakers at Petworth in Sussex for many generations, and their long case clocks are now collectors items. The business still operates at Sturminster Newton in Dorset as Tom Tribe & Son, (no connection to me).

Hello Tom Tribe from another Tom.
I have a family tree dating back to before 1500. My family came from Fernhurst in Sussex where they were Yeoman farmers and blacksmiths.
A branch went to Canada in 1832 and another to Australia later in the nineteenth century, but my branch after moving on from Fernhurst to Tillington then went to S. Lambeth, London at the end of the nineteenth century - and now we are everywhere.
Of course there are many Tribe families so you may not be connected to this at all.

I am looking for information regarding my great grand father Frederick William Tribe who was born in Guildford Surrey circa 1888 to parents Frederick Charles Tribe and Ellen Nash. His siblings were called Gladys and Albert. Following Fred's divorce from Helen Lucy Shephard in the 1920's nothing more is known of Fred. He was a Manager of a Tile Manufacturer in the Manchester area. Any thread would be good

my late mother in law was married to kenneth tribe who served in the second world war and died in action in italy in 1944. His family were from Giusborough in N. yorks.father william james Tribe mother Mabel Williamson.

Albert Henry Tribe m. Elizabeth King

Looking for any info on Albert Henry Tribe. He was born on August 18, 1871 and died May 18, 1954 in Peckham Rye, London. He married Hannah Elizabeth King in 1929. He was married before, but do not know the wife's name. He waited till she had died, but still had four children by Hannah, then he got married.
The story is that the family disowned him due his affair with Hannah. It is also told that his family was well to do and from Kent, England, but have no proof of this.
Any info you might have or where I can find some, I would be greatly appreciated.

I really dont know, but he was supposed to have been in Australia since 1865, story goes that he jumped ship from the "Hellespont" [can't prove this] his trade was Engineer & fitter, I guess anything is possible.

Francis TRIBE trade Moddler & Casts birth & death date unknown, wife unknown.
Son. Francis John TRIBE born London 1845 Trade Engineer & Fitter entered Aust [c] 1865 married Mary Ann HAWTON 1873 at Gurley NSW.

John died aged 44 of heart disease 1889 they had seven daughters and two sons. Mary Jane, Francis John, Rosina,
*Carolyn, Edward Joseph, Sara Ann, *Gertrude. [*two girls died before their parents] I am desperate for information on the parents and siblings of John Francis TRIBE.

Thanks for that . There is a big west Mids contingancy and I think originally it may have been a germanic name. HAve you any knowledge about the 'german' bit? Might be interesting to know. I had hoped it would be French as with the rest of my family names but you cant have everything I suppose!!!

Sorry, from the records I have, I cannot find a Bedelia. That is not to say there is no relationship, but from the records I have, Ellen Crome and her husband, George Tribe resided in Illinois most, if not all of their married life. I am looking for some info on this line of my family. Bedelia Tribe b. ? d. 1955 in Pontiac, MI. She married Thomas Nichols and had 6 children, Tom, Clara E., Violet Bell (b. July 23, 1910 in Jerrries, WS, d. July 1975, Lapwai, ID), Joe, Joyce, and Jackie. I know she had 2 sisters, ones name was Algertha and she married Norman Rodgers and had 3 know children, Bud, Lois Ruth, and Bill. Bedelia Tribe m. Thomas Nichols

Hello,
I think there might be a connection with our families.
You have a Bedelia Tribe marrying a Thomas Nichols.
And you said that she is in the 1920 census at the age of 38 born in Canada.
This is a long shot but my info says Kadelia Adeline Tribe and a1891 census says Adelia Tribe born Feb.10 1882. In a newspaper clipping that I have when her brother my grandfather died it says survived by Mrs. Thos. Nicholson from Pontiac Mich. that was in 1933.(Nicholson could be a newspaper typo, as I have found this alot) In Aylmer Ont. Canada.
The sisters don not seem to match though.
My info says Emeline Malvina Tribe born March 9 1876, Amy 1884, Caroline 1886,Elizabeth R. 1871, Annette Jane 1865. Plus many brothers all children were born in Bayham Twp. Ontario.
But some did move to the States in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Her sisters in the clipping that I have are addressed as Mrs. Almy of Wisconsin, Mrs. A.E. Thomas of Idaho and two brothers Joseph and Warren of Pontiac Michigan. My g.grandfathers name was Ambrose Tribe , Their brother.

Hi I have just found this site and was interested in your ancestry as I have a William Tribe married to a Agnes Charcroft in my family history. According to the info. i have William was born in 1553 and married Agnes on May 27th 1575 he died in 1597. I am a descendant of Martha Tribe who was the daughter of William and Hannah he had a cousin Henry who died in Ontario in 1832. I have press cuttings related to the emigration of many villagers from Sussex who went out to Canada circa. 1830@s

Unfortunately I don't know who John married. All I know is he died sometime before 1875 and he had Ann Elizabeth who married Alfred Haslett of Tillington. I've sent out a few queries on the Tribe message board hoping I'll make a connection.

Hi Shirley. In doing my own family history research, I've come across many, many Tribe families in West Sussex. As the Tribe name is rather popular, you should have an area in which to start from. My great-great-grandmother was born Ann Elizabeth Tribe. I have not researched her side of the family yet as I have been doing more recent work. I believe her father's name was John but that is all I know at the moment. Ann married Alfred Haslett in Tillington, W.Sussex and had 13 children. Good luck.

Sorry Gordon, I have not searched Mary Ann Puttick's family. She married Robert Tribe September 1844 Lodesworth. Mary Ann according to my records gives her birth as being Cuckfield. When Mary Ann & Robert's first child Charlotte was born 1844 they were living in Lodesworth. Have you checked the census?. When their last daughter Mary Ann was born 1852, they were living Midhurst.

My son-in-law has a great great grandfather David Odell who married Sarah Tribe and they lived in New Brunswick. We have been unable to find the parents of Sarah Tribe. The 1881 Canadian Census shows David G. Odell as being 40 years of age and Sarah as bing 39 years. and both of there birthplaces being New Brunswick, Canada. Do you possibly have any information concering Sarah or any members of her family..

No-one knows - but: there is a theory that the Tribes, which was already quite a common name in the Hampshire/Sussex area 400 years ago are descended from a "tribal element" in that area called "Tribus" during Romano- British times. I personally don't believe this - 1000 years is a long gap and surnames are a comparitively modern invention. I think it is more likely to be a corrumption of the Germanic "Trieb " which is a surname which still exists in the German speaking Europe. There are a few examples of this spelling in area around Petworth in the 16th C. The change of spelling from Trieb to Tribe is logical - to get any from the un-english double vowel and to mirror a known english noun.

A Thomas Tribe lived in Elgin County, Ontario, Canada. He married a Jane. They had a son Rueben who married a Cora and they had a daughter Alice who married a Higgins. Got this all from the tombstone in Smucks Cemetery on Jackson Line Road off Highway #19 just south of Straffordville, ON. Hopes this is of some help.

Odell's daughter - Annie, married William Neville Dawson in 1917 but she sadly died shortly afterwards (Aug 1918) before they had any children. William is my third cousin (twice removed) but his father Edward wrote regualrly to my great grandmother and I have the letters. In one he mentions the marriage and subsequent death of Annie (I am happy to provide transcripts or scans of the letter).
