Hello again,

I have been in contact with Eric Trickeys family so I have as much information as they know. I am still trying to find the other two brothers Eugene Leslie, and Harry/Harvey Fane.
Eugene died in Illinois in about 1976, and Harry Fane died in Kamloops in 1937. Eugene went as a home boy from Liverpool in 1913 and Harry went in 1901, both to Canada. They both fought in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France. I can find little information about their lives after WW2.Thank you for being in touch, my grandad would have loved to know as much as I have discovered about his brothers.

Regards
Pauline

Hello Al:

No, I am Joe. I follow the John -> William -> Thomas Trickey line from MO to TX.

I agree with you regarding Giles II. I also have him as a son of John and Sally. This is their first child and also in the same year that they marry (possibly the reason?).

Giles serves in the army and I have discharge papers for him in 1818. He moves to AL and has a son, William, who serves in the civil war.

Happy to compare notes!

Joe

Hi JH:

Are you Jack? Giles II was born about 1795, quite a bit after either of Giles I sons, John or William. Some say Giles II was the son of William. I have settled on a son of John, largely because of a teenager who appears in the household of John (before he left for MO) who is otherwise unaccounted for.

Please contact me and let's compare notes.

Al

I have some census records for Parson County, NC that list a John and William in the Giles Trickey household. Also the will of Giles Trickey leaves property to his son's John and William.

Regarding the Giles Trickey in AL. It appears that he was a soldier in the war of 1812 and received land for his service. I have a reason to believe that this Giles Trickey is the first son of Giles Trickey of Broadclyst, England and who settled in N.C. I know that this is somewhat out of date to the post, but happy to share information.

I am a decendant of Thomas J Trickey b1833, son of William Trickey and Catherine Garner Trickey. I am happy to help and share any of the research that I have conducted. The Trickey's that arrived in the Cape Girardaeu area from North Carolina are difficult to pin down sometimes. The line as best I have been able to determine goes back to Broadclyst, England.

Brother David m/ Hester Hanscom

in the book "The ancestry of joseph Waterhouse 1754-1887 of Standish, Maine" by Walter Goodwin Davis, mention is made that three of David/eleanor Trickey
married first cousins.
If you can't find this book, You an order it from the LDS, #6051074. It had many details about the Libby family, starting on Page 115.

P. S.

I can only add that at the time of Eleanor's birth Francis was the only possible father. Francis was known to have resided in Kittery, while Thomas' children are better known and Thomas never appears anywhere else than in the Dover area where he ran a ferry. Francis had a single son, John, who aparently died childless.

I have that Eleanor was the daughter of Francis and Sarah Trickey. Francis was the brother of Thomas Trickey of Dover.
They arrived in NH around 1737. I can offer much source on Thomas and Francis but little on Eleanor.

Unfortunately my NEHGS membership has lapsed or I would look it up for you. She must, at least have appeared in some issue of the Genealogical Reister. You might also check her appearances in the OneWorld Tree to see if anyone has offered a source.

They would have embalmed him and send him on to Hudson WI. Or where his family wanted him to be sent. I believe it is Hudson.
The records are in Hudson? Maybe in the family cemetery.
If it is important to any one I can go to the Douglas County Court House Superior WI and find his death certificate.

Thomas Donehue Wells my grandfather b 1858 in Morristown NY lived in Stillwater MN over the mississippi to this WI 1880-1901 area
This I believe to be his Uncle and Aunt Sylvester Trickey. I have a obit for Julius Cole. Some of this info is from Al Trickey. I found the obit
e. Sylvester W. Trickey, born: ca 1825, Ontario, Canada. He married three times. He married first to Esther Cole (Thank you Mallory Smith for the info on Esther). Esther died in 1875, and is buried in the Warren Cemetery, Robert, St. Croix Co., Wisconsin. Children: John K., Frederick Lee, Hiram M., Mercy M., Silas Shipman, Alfred Hall, and Laura Trickey. Sylvester married next to Susan H. Bell on 11 Nov 1875 in St. Croix Co., Wisconsin. Susan was born ca 1830 in Canada. Sylvester and his family were listed in the 1870 Warren, St. Croix Co., Wisconsin Census. Sylvester was listed in the 1900 Kalispell, Flathead Co., Montana Census. Sylvester married lastly to Annie _____ in 1902. Annie was born ca 1835 in Canada. They were listed in the 1910 Kalispell, Flathead Co., Montana Census records. Sylvester died on 23 May 1912 in Montana (Thanks again Mallory).

In 1852 Sylvester Trickey and Esther Cole were in Escott, Leeds, Ontario. They can be found at collectionscanada at image #24a. Four images later (#28a.) there is the family of John (age 30), Elizabeth (age 23), Lyman (age 10). Elizabeth (age 3) and Julius (age 2) Cole..
This John Cole appears to be the brother of Esther Cole who married Sylvester Trickey and immigrated to St. Croix County.

John Cole died in Dunn County, WI. Even more interesting son, Julius Cole..

OBIT: Julius Cole B 1859 D Nov 27, 1933
Died at his daughters home in Superior WI Daughter W L Hocum 1208 Et 6th St.
He was a resident of Hudson WI for 60 years. His body will be brought to Hudson WI for burial/funeal service on Tuesday. His body is at Z A Downs funeral home Superior WI Has a daughter Mable Cole and a son Eugene Cole of St Paul MN There is Downs funeral home yet in Superior WI Please post to who may find it of interest.
You do ask the tough ones. I have only two Shipman marriages and one was long after the birth of Silas. The other one would be an odd way to acquire a name. But....who knows?

Sylvester had an uncle by the name of Henry who was married to an Ann Truesdell. Henry died in 1846, and before the year was out, Ann had remarried...........to a Charles Shipman.

But perhaps the answer lies with a Shipman marriage to a sister of Esther Cole.

That happened here and I apologize. Sylvester had several wives (some say four).

Hi Irene:

I'm not too sure whether it is interesting or just confusing. Thomas Trickey and Emeline Wells had a son named Wilson Trickey. He crossed the border into New York State to fight in the U.S. Civil War. Wilson had a brother (Lewis)who did the same.

But Wilson also had a sister named Alzina. The name is not common. The confusion comes from the fact that Wilson also married a woman named Alzina. She was Alzina Nolan Goff. I suspect she was born Alzina Nolan and married a Goff, then was widowed and married Wilson Trickey. After Wilson died she married Robert Cane (actually Robert Cain of the Caintown Ontario Cains).

When Trickey researchers found the same marriage you found it was puzzling. Wilson's sister, Alzina Trickey was known to have married a George Pennock White. Yet here was Alzina Trickey marrying Robert Cane. It took some time to realize that this Alzina was using her married name, not her birth name, and that she was Wilson's wife, not his sister.

As far as I know, only one of Emeline Wells' sons ended up in Wisconsin. Several crossed the border into New York around the time of the Civil War to join the Union forces. One who wasn't in the Civil War settled permanently (more or less) in Alexandria, NY.

Wisconsin ended up being the home of many Trickey clans. Sylvester was the closest relative of yours in St. Croix. But most of the others who settled in St. Croix county were also descendants of Christopher Trickey; and were related to Sylvester. By the way, Sylvester later moved on to Kalispell, Montana. But his wife, Esther Cole, is buried in Roberts, St. Croix along with at least one of his childtren.

In Waushara county (Plainfield) there was a family who spelled their name Trickie. Two generations back, their name was Trottier and they came from Quebec.

Right next door to Plainfield (in Oasis) there was a Trickey family who came from Maine. They were descended from the first Trickey in America (Thomas, who arrived from Devonshire, England in the 1630s).

Then, in Oconto county there was another family of French Canadian Trottiers whose name had changed to Trickey. They may or may not have been directly related to the Trickies of Plainfield.

Wisconsin was a 19th century destination of Trickeys from many clans.

But the largest of these was in St. Croix, and all of those were relatives of the Thomas Trickey your Emeline Wells married.

Regards,

Al

Hi Irene:

Ouch! Maybe you shouldn't go here. Alzina Nolan Goff Trickey became Alzina Nolan Goff Trickey Cane in that marriage.

The bride's deceased husband was William Nelson Trickey, a son of your Emeline Wells. But go no further because when you learn of the rest of Emeline's children it can only deepen your confusion. :-)
Hi again, Elly:

Not good news I'm afraid. There was only one Cole in Yonge in 1820. His name was Peter and he was alone. Could he be Esther's father? No way to tell that I know of.

I did find one interesting thing. The John Cole of 1852 Escott can be found online in a tree. (John E. Cole, b. Feb 1822) He apparently died in Downing, Dunn, WI in 1902. The tree I saw had no parent info, but maybe if you can find his descendants...................

Good Luck,

Al

Hi Elly:

Unfortunately I know of no tree with any iformation on Esther beyond her marriage to Sylvester. But perhaps I can give you some information to help nudge you in the right direction.

In 1852 Sylvester and Esther were in Escott, Leeds, Ontario. They can be found at collectionscanada at image #24a. Four images later (#28a.) there is the family of John (age 30), Elizabeth (age 23), Lyman (age 10). Elizabeth (age 3) and Julius (age 2) Cole.

This John Cole is only 4 years older that Esther, and very likely he is her brother. I find no other Coles in town, so her parents are either deceased or not in Escott.

Since Sylvester spent much of his youth in Front Yonge, I suspect the romance may have started there. But there is a problem. The early census years of Yonge are online at the Leeds and Grenville Genweb. But they only go up to 1820 so there is a big gap up to 1852. And, of course, the early listings will only provide ead of household.

But I will check Yonge in 1820 an let you know if I find any Coles.

Al

MI. pages 10 and 11.

On page 10 it shows Sylvester W. Trickey and his wife, Esther Cole. At the bottom of that same page and the top of the next is the household of Esther Cole's father and step-mother with many of Esther's siblings and a half-sibling.

Hi again Elly:

Before I get you totally confused, I should square away one thing.

I said that Sarah was Sylvester's 2nd wife. That may not be quite true. Esther died in 1875 and is buried in Wisconsin. But then who is the Sarah of 1870, and where is Esther?

The answer may be that Esther was actually either Sarah Esther or Esther Sarah. In the 19th century the alternate use of first and middle names was quite common. And, if I recall correctly, Esther was buried as the wife of Sylvester Trickey.

So, when looking at Sarah, we may be looking at Esther.

Al

Mea culpa. That's what I get for playing "hurry up" genealogy.

John Cole (wife Elizabeth) was indeed a brother of Esther and not her father. That, in turn, makes Julius Esther's nephew, not her brother.

John and Elizabeth were also in Escott in 1851.

Truth will out, despite embarrassment.

I hope nobody will mind if I don't sign this.

Yes that is me. Keep forgetting my password and have to change. Haven't had time for genealogy in a year or so.
Silas is my husbands great grandfather. I switch computers about 1 1/2 years ago and my old program would not go on the new so having to enter everything again. Having to do it the old fashioned way for now so bear with me. I have never found reason for the Shipman name and would be very interested in that. Elly

I only know she was the wife of Sylvester and I believe the first wife. I know she died in Wisconsin. I may have info on his other wives. Will look that up and let you know. Do you have any information on the parents of Esther? Thanks.

I have found that as well. Also the John Cole in that census must be her brother, not father.(check the ages)
I am hoping to have a visit (only an hour or so) to that area and want to check records, but never sure when that might happen. Between Sylvester's children there are small age gaps until Alfred and then 7 years unitl Sarah. So a late child or new wife?? If they divorced why list her as wife of Sylvester?? Isn't genealogy fun?

Thank you so much for your trouble. Esther Cole is the one link I could not continue until now. Had actual seen this John Cole but not able to place with Esther. She is not listed on this census either so it is confusing when trying to connect. Thank you again. Elly
