Re: John Trigg, Gwent, Wales

Hi Emma-Jayne,

I have searched the B/M/D records for your Grandfather and have come up with the marriage record for Betty J. Sawford and John H. Trigg. Married in Bedford in the 4th quater of 1949. The reference is Volume 4a Page 56.

Also the marriage of Linda M. McCLoy and Henry G. Trigg married in Bedwellty Monmouthshire 2nd quater of 1919 ref. volume 11a Page 289. Linda and Henry would be the parents of John Trigg.

By ordering these certificates it would give you the names of both men's fathers, also their addresses and occupations.

If you order through ancestry.co.uk it will cost £23 sterling each certificate. We have a General records office in London with whom I have an account, and the certs. only cost £7 each. If you are interested you can send a cheque to me and I will order them for you, and e-mail them to you or send the certificates on to you. They take about 10 days to arrive with me after ordering,

Hope this might help, regards, Sandra.

I have a copy of our Trigg family done by a cousin of mine. Abram Trigg is listed as a son of William Trigg of Bedford County, Va. William and his wife Sarah Sanders had 11 children. Abram Trigg was born in Bedford County, Virginia on October 17, 1779 and died at his home in Perry County, Alabama on June 11, 1841. He married Martha Saunders,(his cousin) who was the daughter of Thomas Saunders. One of their daughters was named Mary Ann. This may or may not be the same one you are asking about. I can scan the page about him and send it if you'd like to see it.

Reason Trigg

Depending on your point of view, Reason Trigg was either a hero or a villain. I'll let you decide.

The story starts out innocently enough. James Foster, Sr. (my ggg grandfather, had a grand-daughter named Nancy Park, daughter of Overton Park and Mary Ellen Foster. Nancy was born 0n 5 Oct 1846 in Benton County, MO and on 8 Nov 1865, she married a neighbor boy, Reason Trigg. Reason was born om 15 May 1840 in Ohio to John and Elizabeth Trigg and had moved to Missouri as a young man.

Reason and Nancy lived in Missouri for about 10 years and then moved to Piatt County, IL. They lived a farming life with eleven children. Nancy died in April 1913 and on January 14th, 1914, Reason Trigg made a startling confession.

On July 4th, 1886, a man named Henry Wildman murdered his wife in Monticallo, Fiatt County, Illinois because she would not turn over a $12,000 inheritance. He then tried to kill himself by cutting his own throat, but failed, leaving himself gravely ill. He was believed to be dying but somehow he pulled through. This was particularly troubling for the people of Monticello. A man named Lawrence Dewees had also killed his wife and was released because his trial was postponed too many times. When Henry Wildman hired a high powered attorney who got his trial delayed, he sealed his fate.

On the night of 13 Oct 1886, a gang of men showed up at the jail on horseback. A carefully coordinated plan was set into motion. Guards were set out, a battering ram was brought and the brick wall was broken down. Henry was dragged from the jail and hung from the tree outside the jail. Ten bullets were fired into his body, just to be sure. By the time anyone from the town showed up at the jail, the lynch mob had dispersed. All that was left was a wife-murderers lifeless body hanging fr4om the tree.

No arrests were ever made. The townsfolk seemed content to let the whole episode be forgotten about. But not Reason Trigg. He was the mastermind of the lynching and had personally thrown the rope over the tree branch. For 28 years the incident had weighed on his shoulders. He couldn't confess as long as he had a family to support. He became a Christian and knew that he should confess his sin. After the death of Nancy he could bear it no more. He first confessed to Philo Wildman, Henry's brother. He then went to the Piatt County jail and confessed to the County Sherriff.

No one knew quite what to do with him. the lynching in 1886 had made national news and was an embarrassment to the county. Now, this story was even bigger news. The whole sordid affair was brought back out. Where were between 100 and 300 people in the lynch mob and no one had ever broken the code of silence. Would they all be tried now?

On 6 Feb 1914 the Grand Jury convened. They did what a good citizen of Monticello would do, they simply chose to ignore it and refused to return an indictment. Reason Trigg left the courthouse and said, "I am content, and my conscience has been satisfied,". he returned to his farm. Reason lived for 16 more years, dying at the age of 90 on 5 Sep 1930.

So ends the story of Reason Trigg, the husband of my first cousin, three times removed. So what do you think? Hero? Villain? Something in between?

SEARCH. DOCUMENT.

David, I had a look through the Pallot's Marriage Index and found a marriage of John Trigg and Susanna Fisher in Ramsey Hunter I think it says - in 1828.
That was too late for my John and Susannah (Joseph was born in 1818) but would explain some of the problems I have found with censuses and deaths - there were 2 Susanna(h)'s.
On the deaths and marriages of their children in Australia she is referred to as Susan (I thought her daughter's marriage certificate in 1861 would be closest) Mursell. On Henry's death certificate in 1876 it looks more like Susan Merssle.
I have been unable to find any other reference to a marriage so far.
Ann

Hi David, I am also researching John Trigg and Susannah Mursell. I have ordered what I hope to be their death certificates - if you find their marriage I would be thrilled to hear from you.
Their son Henry came to Australia with his wife Mary Bidnall and daughter Emily Ann Trigg with Henry's sister Martha and her husband Eli Wright on the Black Eagle in 1867.
Sadly Martha died a year after arriving in Australia.
They followed their brothers Joseph and John and sister Sarah to Australia.
Eli Wright was a witness at the wedding John and Susannah's daughter, Sarah, to Thomas Amos, in Geelong in 1861.
Sarah died in New Zealand and her neice later married Thomas Amos and they had 3 children - one born in Australia.
Emily Ann is my husband's GGrandmother - she married Henry Frederick Christopher William Erbs.
Good luck with your searching - I am doing the same!
All the best
Ann

Hello Emm-Jayne,

Eugene McCloy was born in Bandon, Cork in 1868. He and his brother of 1 year, and norah and james McCloy ran away from the army barracks at Bandon after James did something illegal. We have a story from our oldest living relative, she says that she can remember being told about his being arrested many years later, probably about 1890, and spending time in a military prison, but we do not know where. She says that the family were told that he had been boot legging in the army! I Have a photograph of James.

Good luck, Sandra.
Hi, My name is Sandra McCoy, my husband is David Michael McCloy. His Great Grandfather was James McCloy born Ireland 1840's. His Grandmother was Ann Norah McCLoy, formerly Sweeney, born in Bandon in county Cork in 1854. The name which you have (Mee) is a mistake, in the handwriting of the enumerator on the census. My husband's grandfather was John McCloy born 1885 in Blaina. I have lots of B/M/D certificates, and have located Jame and norah's burial place in Blaina, where they are buried with two sons, Eugene who died of gastroenteritis in 1890 and Thomas who died in the North Griffin Pit disaster in 1898.

If you would like to e-mail me, please do so. You might be able to help us. We are living two miles away from Blaina, and know the area and people.

regards, Sandra.
