W. E. Tripp - Michigan 1860s

My 2nd great-grandfather is William Ebenezer Tripp, b. 1849 in Crawford Co, PA. I find no records of his parents (Nancy Davis and W.E. Tripp) ever marrying, but William E. and his mother Nancy disappear from the Davis family from 1850-1870 and, according to William E.'s obituary, he lived in Menominee County, Michigan until age 14. Menominee Co. did not exist as such at that time, so I can only guess what he really meant. I find many Tripps in Michigan in the 1860s, but no sign of William E. or his mother in the 1860 census. Is it possible they were living with the mysterious father, W.E. Tripp? Does anyone have any information on a Michigan-dwelling, 1860s Tripp with a son from a "previous relationship"?
