It is possible that both are true . The conflicts in Alsace border area caused many Huegonots and others to flee to Switzerland . But many folks who still live the French speaking area have a "German' surname and a "French" Christian name . Our Truby was Christophe Trube on arrival in Philadelphia 200 years ago. We don't know which dialects he spoke .
We have 2 or perhaps 3 separate Truby Families in Western PA , USA .

I am the grandaughter of David James Truby, born in Islington, London in 1895. Son of Frederick Truby. He had various siblings: Edward, Frederick,Ethel,Joseph, Annie and Ernest.

If anyone has any connections to him I would be pleased to know. My grandfather was under the impression he was of french ancestry [Trubee] but from what I have read recently more likely to be German.

Eliz. Truby (b. 1798), mar. to David M. Brown, then George Brown?

I need some help! I have an ancestor, Eliz. Truby (b. 1798 Pa), who married David M. Brown (b. 1790 Ireland) in 1820. That has been established. Now David Brown does not appear in any census that I have found in 1830 or after, and I suspect he may have died. Elizabeth Truby had at least 3 children, Martha (b. 1827), Henry T. (b. 1829), and Jackson (b. 1831). As of 1850, she was widowed. On the death certificate for Henry T., it says his father was "George Brown". This suggests that Elizabeth remarried a George Brown after the death of David M. Brown. It may have been the George Brown that was the brother of David M. Brown - he was much older, born in 1877 in Ireland, and so, much older than David. This George Brown, according to the "William Worth" genealogy site, died after 1840 in Kittanning. But I cannot find any reasonable fit for this George Brown, and Elizabeth Truby-Brown and her children in the 1830 or 1840 censuses.

To make matters worse, the 1850 census states that Martha, Henry T., and Jackson were born in Ohio. Even worse, in later censuses Henry T. indicates born in Ohio sometimes and in Pennsylvania sometimes. The last straw is that his obit, which may be unreliable, states he was born in Allegheny County. What a mess!

For me to be able to figure this out, I think I'll have to have a death date for David M. Brown, or a marriage date for Elizabeth to George Brown, or some reliable census data for the family in 1830 or 1840. If you can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Seeking Ancestors of David TRUBY 1868-1941

I'm also trying to research this right now. Going through some Census data, I think I've located this particular David Truby. I believe he was one of as many as 10 kids to Michael Truby (b. ~1813-1816). I've having trouble deciphering all the possible wives but I think David was the son of an Emma(b. ~1833). Among the kids I believe David and Emma had together are Susanna (b. ~1851), Margaret (b. ~1854), Michael (b. ~1856), Emma (b. ~1857), Tillie (b. ~1858), William (b. ~1864), David (b. 1868), and Joseph (b. ~1874). I believe David also had at least two other kids from a previous marriage - John (b. ~1842) and Levina (b. ~1845). There might even be others. Again, this was just pieced together from various Censuses. I'm having trouble finding Michael's parents but I do believe they were also born in Pennsylvania. I have found a John H. Truby in the 1850 Census living with Michael Truby (age 35), Elizabeth Truby (age 9), Emley Truby (age 16) and Sevine Truby (age 14) but I'm not sure if this is the right John or Michael. Hope this helps. Hopefully its a start.

I discovered the following notice while searching microfilmed newspapers for Putnam Co., Indiana...

Research indicates this is Rebecca Truby wife of John Cutright
-------------------------------------------------

The Indiana Press
Greencastle, Indiana
Saturday January 15, 1859
Vol. I - No. 85
Page 1 - Column 1

Mrs. Rebecca Cutright died in Upshur County, Virginia on the 5th ult., at the extraordinary age of one hundred and six years. An obituary of her says: She was the first white woman who settled in the valley of the Buckannon river, coming to Western Virginia when quite young, and living with her husband in a hollow tree, at the mouth of Turkey run, in what is now Upshur county. - The deceased retained all her faculties in vigor until the close of her long and eventful life, and on the morning of her decease was caressing one of her great-grand children, when, feeling weary, she requested the child "to be quiet while granny would lay down and sleep."
The venerable old lady then laid down upon her bed and "slept the sleep that knows no waking." Her descendendants number between four and five hundred.

-------------------------------------------------------

I do have a copy of the image and will send to anyone interested

My great-grandfather, Jacob B. Rumbaugh, had 2 sisters, Susanna & Phoebe, who married 2 Truby brothers, Oliver James & John, sons of Christopher & Elizabeth. In 1850 through 1870 census reports, these families were in Jefferson County, PA. I recall, as a child (1950's), going to Sigel (Eldred Twp., Jefferson County) with my mother to visit Truby's. Their names may have been George & Eleanor, but I wouldn't want to swear to that. Anybody have any information on these folks?

You could have the right lineage - and mine could be wrong. What proofs do you have of Jacob's son's marriage? I have only been able to find a Jacob Truby Jr, Jane - wife, with 3 children - one being George - age 13 living in Perry Township, Armstrong Couty, PA in 1850. I can't find them after that. I can find George Truby married to Johanna Fritz in 1880 in Oil City, Venango, PA. According to RootsWeb World Connect Project: Smith, Hook, Belcher/Williams, Mayes Genealogy - Jacob Truby Sr. and Mary Magdelena Lauffer aka "Polly" had a son Jacob Truby Jr. who married Jane Robinson. This Jacob Jr 's dates are given as 13 May 1814 D. AFT 1870 and Jane Robinson B. 1806 D. AFT 1880.

I am interested in your remark that you have information from a Jacob Truby's family bible that was submitted to DAR as a proof. I am assisting a Jane Truby in making application to DAR - we think following the line of Rev Pat - Christopher and Sybilla's/ son Jacob and Mary Magdalena "Polly"'s son/ Jacob Jake and Jane's son/ George and Johanna's son/ Frederick and Estella's daughter Jane. All of the Jacob's are driving me crazy. Could you tell me what information the Bible pages contain? If they are the right Jacob's is it possible that I could obtain a copy of the informaton that you have?

Hi Michelle

I have Emily Sarah TRUBY in my tree: she married her second cousin Thomas King BUMPUS in 1864, & I believe she died in 1875. I have little information other than index information, but am interested because of the connection to the RICHARDSON family.

I am descended from Thomas KING who married Susannah (?nee Richardson) c 1818. I believe that Susannah's cousin Mary Richardson md Thomas William TRUBY were Emily's parents.

Thomas & Susannah's surviving children were Mary (b 1818 who married John BUMPUS in 1838) and Thomas (b 1821) who left England to come to New Zealand in 1840, and was a businessman, politician & bank manager in New Plymouth. They had 2 daughters & 6 sons. One of his sons was Frederick Truby King, another was Newton who was my g'grandfather. There are many descendants with Truby as a given name - my sister, aunt, nephew...

Do you know anything more about the RICHARDSON family?

Cheers,
jo
in Auckland, New Zealand

I too descend twice from Christopher Truby. My ancestor was Michael's younger brother Jacob who married Maria Magdalena Lauffer and lived near Hillville, Perry Twp., Armstrong Co., PA. I believe Michael was originally buried in our Truby-Rumbaugh Cemetery there, but later moved to Brady's Bend. One of Jacob's daughters married John Rumbaugh and a Kline married into their line.
shelbadavis@digitex.net
One of Jacob
s daughters married John Rumbaugh and another Benjamin Barger - both my ancestors. Have quite a bit of data on descendants of my branch. Michael served as drummer boy in his father's unit while my Jacob was still too young to serve.
shelbadavis @digitex.net

There was a Bernice Truby (or Trubey) who was born about 1920, and lived in Oakland County, Michigan. I believe her mother's name was Rhoda. Bernice had a daughter named Janice (or Janis) when she married a Mr. Carie, who also lived in Oakland County, Michigan, but he had been born in Indiana. Bernice had two children (daughter Judy and son Tim) by Mr. Carie. They later divorced, and Bernice remarried (spouse unknown to me) and moved to North Carolina. At some time during the 1990's, Bernice died.

It seems that Jacob Stalnaker married Elizabeth Truby who was a daughter of John & Esther Truby, and that Jacob & Elizabeth had a son, Jacob, Jr., who married Eleanor Truby, daughter of Christopher & Sybella Truby. It looks to me like Christopher & Elizabeth were either siblings or cousins. However, most of the people who are posting information are unaware of the fact that people seldom have children when they are 11 years old, and few women bare children for 60 years. Does anybody have any valid information on this family?

Have data from the Bible of Jacob Truby and wife Maria Magdalane "Polly" Lauffer that was submitted to DAR. Of those who came to Armstrong and Clarion Co. areas, Jacob's brother Michael Truby (d 1842) married Anna Maria Klein, brother Christopher Truby (d 1845 Clarion Co. ) married Susanna Lauffer (a relative of Jacob's wife), sister Mary Ann Truby (d 1868 Parker, Armstrong Co.) married (2) Dr. Simeon Hovey. IOf the others, sister Catherine/a married (1) Frederick Rorher (20 John Marshall lived at Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., before moving to New Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH where both died c 1806; Elizabeth Truby married John Ruff/Rugh and supposedly died OH; John Truby b 1771 supposedly d 20 Aug 1854, but where? md Magdaline Reamer.

.Jacob had a son Henry Lauffer Truby b 18 Aug 1821 d 2 June 1857 buried Rumbaugh Cem, Perry Twp (Lower Hillville)
married Ann Eliza/Elizabeth Ann McClure.

To add to the problem some other Trubys came from Germany to Armstrong Co. in the early/mid 1800s and tended to use some of the the same given names.
I'll send more to your email address, Shelba--but I'm attaching for others a photo of the site of Jacob Truby's grave. The markers are long gone, although the stone for his brother Christopher Truby (born 1761) is present and legible. This cemetery (Rumbaugh Cemetery, high on the west bank of the Allegheny River north of East Brady on the Seybertown Road in Perry Township, Armstrong County PA) is hard to locate--high up a steep, woodsy path. It was the best cemetery adventure I ever had!
