Beverly,
My notes have 17 Sep 1789 in Mercer County Kentucky. I don't have a source for this information though. I do have a little information on George Trumbo if you are interested. I have some notes I got about 10 years ago that may give you some clues to help in your research. I never did persue George Trumbo's line much. If you are interested, I will gladly send you what I have. just send me an email at trumbodr@yahoo.com

Donald Trumbo

Re: A Trumbo married to a Wilkin/Wilkins

As for the Rebecca Glover who married George Wilkin, both originally from Hardy County WV, I think the best way to for Glovers to determine relationships is for male Glovers to take the familytreedna.com DNA test. It costs something, but in the long run I think it saves time, money, and frustration. I found two distant cousins that way, who had been separated from my immediate family in 1820, and we were able to share a lot of info. Our DNA on 37 markers matched exactly. I am descended from Richard Glover, who lived briefly in Hardy County WV, and apparently migrated to Licking County OH in the 1820's.

I am not sure if your data includes the family of William Riley Bennett. If so, one of his daughters is my mother Goldie F. and she married Glen Noah Stemple instead of Glen Dale Stemper as shown in some lists. I have more information for those who ae interested. This is also a connection to the William Ward list becauuse Glen's grandmother was Minerva Ward and her grandfather was Augustin B. Ward.

William Riley Bennett is also in the Sarah Elizabeth Forgeson and William Atchison line.

Donald, Thank you for the prompt reply. The Neffs married into the Trumbos and I only have information on the offspring. Will email you a group sheet for your "unknown Trumbo" file. First and second generation Swiss which the Neffs were usually married into Swiss lines which in this case would also have a common church affilation, ie Swiss\German or Dutch Reformed. I check my book of Swiss family names (Züricher Familiennamen) and do not find Trumbo or other variations you mentioned. It could be they came from the Lugano (Italian) Canton or region of Switzerland down into the Alsase region and then to German and America. We do have a Trumbo connection down in Hardy County VA near Moorefield which is a line found in the Feltner genealogy I have but Neffs are not mentioned. If you know of anyone who would be interested in the Trumbo genealogy I have, let me know.

I really wish I could help you. I have ran accross the Trumbo name in MD a few times during my research and have not been able to place it. If you do find anything please let me know. I found in 2000 on the LDS site a family group record that listed a Adam Trumbo b. 11 Aug 1750 in Maryland that married Henrietta Sellman b. 1762 in Maryland. It lists their (9) children. I printed it back in 2000 and stuck it in my folder of unknown Trumbo's. Is this your family? Have you tried researching variations of the Trumbo name. I have always wondered if Trumbo was a variation of Trum. The only immigration record I have been able to find is for Andreas Trum (aka Dorn). I have researching over the years to try and see if possibly Andreas Trum and Andreas Trumbo are in fact the same person. The Variations of the name that you might try are TRUM, DROM, DRUM, DRUMM, DORN, & TROMBAUER. I am starting to believe that all these names are connected in some way. If you have some notes you can send me I don't mind helping in your research.

Donald Trumbo
trumbodr@yahoo.com
Trumbo family of Baltimore (Carroll) County, MD 1770's.

George Conrad Trumbo b. abt 1755 married a Mary Neff b. 1756, dau of Henry Neff and Hannah aka Johanna Steger. Family lived near Westminister in Baltimore Co., MD which later became Carroll County, MD. Known children are George Trumbo, Mary, who married an Abraham Lammott, Elizabeth who married a Jacob Grove, and Hannah who married a John Louis Wampler. The children are listed in documents found in the Sept. 1841 Term of the Baltimore Co., MD Chancery Court.

I recently aquired a Trumbo Genealogy by a Conrad W. Feltner, published in hard cover in 1974. The book, 541 pages, is devoted to the Trumbo families of Hardy Co., VA (WV) and Page and Frederick Counties of VA,KY and Washington Co., PA and their descendents. The only possible
reference to Trumbos of interest to me is the family of an Andrew Trumbo Jr. whose wife was Luise. Children listed were Sophia b. June 1746, John b. abt. 1748, Jacob b. abt 1756, Andrew III b. 30 Dec 1756, George b. abt 1756/58, which could possibly be the George Conrad Trumbo found in Baltimore Co., MD though not proven, Henry b. abt 1758 and a Catherine married to a Jacob Mack of Bucks Co., PA in 1768. The Neff of Carroll Co., MD were members of the Swiss\German Reformed faith and parents were immigrants from the Zurich area of Switzerland.

Would appreciate hearing from folks researching the early Trumbo family of Baltimore (Carroll) counties in MD.

I believe that your Lucy J. Trumbo was married to William R. Brown of England. They lived in Howe, Grayson County, Texas. A sister,Nancy Rebecca, known as N. R. married a Hughes. They had twin daughters. Buried in the cemetery in Howe Texas is Nancy and Volney Trumbo and others. Do you have any information on them?
I have been working on this for years and I still have not been able to trace William from England to America?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jerrie
trum or variants of the name

I am trying to confirm who the following family is. Actually trying to find out if this could be Andreas Trumbo and his family. There are many similarities and am am starting to feel that we are all connected (Trum variants). Anyone with any information to help me, it would be greatly appreciated. I found the following:

In the "Passenger and Immigration Index, 1500s-1900s," I found the following:
Port of arrival: New York
Date: 1710
Primary Immigrant: Trum, Andreas
Accompaning family members:
Child Trum, Maria Catherina
Child Trum, Anna Margaretha
Child Trum, Sophia Catherine
Child Trum, Maria Margaretha Engel
Child Trum, Johann Philip
Wife Trum, Maria Magdalena Schopp
Child Trum, Hans Theobald
Child Trum Hans Jacob

Source of record: Jones Henry Z., JR. The Palatine
Families of New york: A Study of the German Immigrants
Who Arrived in Colonial New York in 1710, VolI.
Universal City, CA. 624p

According to "The Simmendinger Register of 1709," Trum, Andreas and his wife Margaretha Magdalena and 5 children settled in New York/Pennsylvania (depending on the date) at Hunderstown (East Camp). This reference is actually of the trip from France to America. Ulrich Simmendinger was a passenger that returned to his fatherland to write this pamplet giving account of his experiences and containing a list of those people he left behind in New York. The land settled was the land on the East side of the Hudson River purchased by Robert Livingston for the purpose of providing settlement for the immigrants. West Camp and East Camp were settled by Palantinate refugees sent by Queen Anne around 1710. I also am trying to prove the origin of the Trumbo name. I believe it could have been VON TRUMBACH or a variation of another form. I haven't found my Andreas Trumbo or family members prior to early 1700's.

Publication: Simmendinger, ULRICH, True and Authentic Resgister of Persons Still Living, by God’s Grace, Who In The Year 1709, Under The Wonderful Provences of the Lord, Journeyed From Germany to America or New World.
Primary Immigrant: Trum, Andreas
Accompanying family members: Wife Margareth Magdalena; 5 children.
From Source:
Trum, Andreas, (c) w. Margaretha Magdalena & 5 ch.
Trumbohr, Nicolaus, (e) w. Magdalena & 4 ch.
Dhorn, Lazarus (c) w. Ann Catherine & 4 ch. (another source says this is alias Trum)
Notes: (c) = Hunderston (in East Camp) (e) = Becksmanland. Today Hunterstown Pennsylvania, Adams County. Was York PA. Oldest town in Adams County. Named after hunters who settled the land in 1700’s.
Have copy of digital source from internet. Have not seen actual phamplet

New York Subsistence List 1710 & 1712
Dorn, Lazarus (alias Trum) 2-4, 2-3 (two adults, two ch under 10)

In the Colonial Census of Palatine in “The Book of Names, Orphans” it lists:
1710, Sep 28 Mary Trum 15, Parents Trum, Bound to Richard Willet of New York

If any of this information sounds familiar or if you have more please respond. Thank you.

Donald Trumbo
trumbodr@yahoo.com
Re: Trumbo family

I will have to do some further researching. My initial search didn't reveal anything. You are searching the line that has caused me confusion over the years. When you search for Abraham Trumbo be careful because I have found him listed as Ambrose in a couple places. The 1860 Census in Illinos lists him as Ambrose. I believe your William is either from Abraham's line or the line through Mathias Trumbo. Both went through Ohio and Illinois. Some of their family members crossed over to Missouri. Yes, I do have a web site. It has some Trumbo information on it. The web address is:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/r/u/Don-Trumbo-...

Good luck on your search and I will let you know if I come accross anything.

Donald Trumbo

Thanks for the reply. I see you are from the same area where my Trumbos are from.

William Trumbo b 7/3/1834 Ohio (from 1900 census), also found source that lists birthplace as Licking OH. d 7/17/1902, Linn Co., MO. Married 1/1/1861, Evans, Marshall co.IL, Another source on LDS lists marriage at 12/27/1860, Ottawa, Lasalle Co., IL. to Catherine Rebecca PARKINSON.

I am trying to locate the father of this William Trumbo. I found an LDS source listing his father as Presley Trumbo and Marellah Lippincott. I don't believe this is correct because birthdates are not correct to make a match and there is no source listed.

I suspect he is related to this Abraham Trumbo:

"Sketch of Settlers
Fall River
[Pages 390-393]
Abraham TRUMBO was born in Pendleton County, Va., and resided in Licking County, Ohio, eighteen years; left there for Illinois in November, 1829, with the GREENE Colony. That company crossed White river, in Indiana, in the morning, and Mr. TRUMBO arrived on its banks the evening of the same day; it had become swollen during the day so that he was detained four weeks before he could cross. He went to Sangamon County, where he wintered, and reached La Salle County in the spring of 1830; he first bought a claim of William RICHEY on S. 17, and afterwards purchased on Secs. 14 and 22. He was the first Supervisor of the town. He died Oct. 7th, 1865, aged 73 yrs, and his wife, Esther DYER, died in April, 1865. His children were: Jane, who died in 1848; Ambrose, married Casbia GENTLEMAN, is a wealthy farmer on the old farm; Margaret, married John S. ARMSTRONG, is living in Mission; Rebecca, married Samuel PARR, and lives in Rutland; Jackson, died of cholera in 1848."

However, I can't seem to make a connection. His daughter, Ida May Trumbo was married in Wenona IL. They were in this area until at least 1868.

Any help is greatly appreciated - do you have a web site?
feud "on behalf of" Lucy Trumbo

Information on Reverend James Stewart
In 1886, he was elected County Judge of Rowan County. (Previously, James had "seized" the position of county Judge. His rule was short lived. See opinion opinion of the Kentucky Court of Appeals below. He served as a judge during the aftermath of the Allen-Tolliver feud. Morehead was the center of the "Rowan County War" which started on Election Day in 1884 when a gunfight broke out after the polls closed. For the following three years, a bitter feud between two families, the Tollivers and the Martins, raged. The fighting was so brutal that many families moved out of the community. Twice the state militia was called in, but the fighting continued. Infuriate residents ultimately took matters into their own hands, cornering many of the feuding men in a hotel where most of the men in the feuding families were killed.
The feud had it origins at dance held in early August 1884 in a Morehead hotel. Lucy Trumbo grew tired and retired to what she believed to be her room. Later, H.G. Price, a wealthy business man, returned to his room and found to his pleasure Ms. Trumbo asleep in his bed and crawled in beside her. Fleeing with a scream, she told her husband, William Trumbo.
Several days later, the feud started during the election day voting for the county sheriff. .The August election day was marked, as usual, by drunkenness, gunfire, fist fights, and vote buying; the secret ballot had not been adopted in Kentucky, and people voted in public, their votes called out as they were cast, thus assuring that they would vote as they had been paid to. Free whiskey encouraged voting. And fighting..
On election day, William Trumbo ran into Price and demanded an apology. Price protested that he had done nothing wrong. A fight followed and John Martin joined in the fracas. Floyd Tolliver, Craig.s brother, knocked John Martin almost out. Martin drew his gun and so did Tolliver and each shot at the other. Several others joined in the gun fight and as it concluded in a smoky haze, Solomon Bradley, a friend of the Martins, was dead and Martin was wounded. They charged Tolliver with shooting Bradley and wounding Martin. However, they indicted both Martin and Tolliver subsequently for Bradley.s murder because the grand jury could not sort out the complicated and contradictory evidence.
Before their December trial date, Martin and Tolliver ran into each other at the Gault House in Morehead. Both were drinking, exchanged heated words, drew pistols and Tolliver lay dead. As he lay dying, Tolliver had said to a friend .Remember what you swore to do. You said you.d kill him. Keep your word..
Soon the word spread through Morehead that Craig Tolliver would kill Martin in revenge for the death of his brother. Hearing these reports, Morgan.s uncle, Judge James S. Stewart ordered Martin transferred to Winchester until the December trial. Craig Tolliver boasted that he could wait for his return. In response, a hearing was held on whether to return Martin to Morehead.
In the book Kentucky's Famous Feuds and Tragedies by Charles G. Mutzenber, (R.F. Fenno & Co., New York 1917), Mutzenber reviews these events:
December 10, 1884, was the day set for the examining trial before County Judge Stewart at Morehead. Before that day arrived, the unusual activity of the Tollivers, the ominous collection of all the members and friends of that family, the frequent but secret meetings, had been quietly, but nevertheless keenly observed by Judge Stewart. He was convinced that if Martin were brought back to Rowan County at this time of ferment and excitement he would suffer a violent death at the hands of his enemies, and that any attempt on the part of the officers and friends of the prisoner would precipitate a conflict, the magnitude of which could not be foretold.
In this opinion Judge Stewart was sustained by Attorney Young. After a careful investigation of the state of affairs the court decided on an indefinite postponement of the trial. The order to the jailer of Clark County, directing him to deliver Martin to officers of Rowan County, was suspended on the 9th day of December, but unfortunately (fateful neglect!) the order of suspension was not communicated to the Clark County jailer. The wife of John Martin had been advised of the postponement of the trial. The faithful woman who had already suffered untold anxiety and fear for the safety of her husband, felt relieved and hastened to Winchester to inform him of the action of the Court of Rowan County.
As soon as the Tollivers were informed that the trial would not take place, and that, therefore, Martin would remain at Winchester for an indefinite time, they convened in a council of war to discuss plans of campaign.
Thus Judge Stewart.s decision to postpone the trial sat in motion events that would lead to Martin.s death by trickery.
In mid-December, Jeff Bowling, the Farmers town marshal and a Tolliver operative, armed with a false warrant and four recruited deputies, went to Winchester and presented the fake warrant to the jailer. Martin begged not to be released stating his wife had told him that Judge Stewart had delayed his trial indefinitely. Unfamiliar with the situation and presented with an apparently valid warrant, the jailer released Martin to their custody and Bowling took him back to Farmers on a train. As the train pulled into Farmers, six men removed Martin. When Martin attempted to escape, he was shot. Martin made it back to Morehead on the train but died the next morning.
Martin.s death resulted in open warfare in the county. Lawless and violence ruled Morehead and the surrounding county. .... Between August 1884 and July 1887, twenty men were killed and more than half of [Morehead.s] population left. In 1885, Morehead listed more than 700 citizens; by 1887 that had shrunk to 296..
Judge Stewart acted to protect Martin but his actions were without success. As James Stewart was a Republican, his aid to the Martins did not test his political loyalties. After the Tollivers took control of the county, he continued as judge and died in 1892. Judge James Stewart gave testimony before a special inquiry of the Kentucky Legislature on the feud. He gave his testimony in Morehead on February 10, 1888.
The following is his testimony. Judge James Stewart, sworn by Mr. Hendrick, and examined by Mr. Wright, testified as follows:
     Q. What is your age?
     A. Sixty-six.

     Q. Where do you live?

     A. Eight miles from here.

     Q. What is your occupation?

     A. Farming a little and County Judge some.

     Q. When were you elected County Judge?

     A. Last August a year ago. I have been County Judge six years going on.

     Q. Did you ever hold any official position besides that?

     A. No, sir. I was a Minister of the Gospel.

     Q. You have been a preacher?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. You have had a good deal of trouble in this county?

     A. Yes, right smart.

     Q. What has been the cause of the trouble?

     A. I do not know that I can tell you the cause. I know bad conduct was the cause in the first place, whisky was the first introduction of it.

     Q. Do you know how many places whiskey is sold in this town?

     A. There is not but one place except the drug store.

     Q. Did they ever take a vote on the whisky question?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. What year?

     A. Last August a year ago.

     Q. Did they take it for the county or the precinct?

     A. They took it for the precinct.

     Q. How did it go?

     A. I think a majority voted agin it.

     Q. Was the vote ever returned to you by the Sheriff?

     A. The vote was not carried out according to law, the orders were not
made.

     Q. Why not?

     A. Neglect.

     Q. Whose fault was it?

     A. I don't know whose.

     Q. Did they not present the vote to you?

     A. I helped compare the polls.

     Q. Did the County Clerk record the vote?

     A. I reckon he did.

     Q. Why didn't you make the order on your order book?

     A. I was ready to make it. I didn't know no decision of law about it. I thought it went out when the vote was taken. I never looked at the law.

     Q. You did not make the order?

     A. Because I thought it went out itself when it was voted out.

     Q. Who is the Sheriff of this county?

     A. Squire Hogge.

     Q. Does he belong to either faction?

     A. No, sir; I don't know that he belongs particularly to either.

     Q. Does rumor charge him with belonging to either?

     A. Rumor may say he rather belongs to the Tolliver faction; but I don't know that he belongs to any.

     Q. Which side are you accused of belonging to?

     A. Ne're one; I am no fighter.

     Q. Which side elected you or supported you?

     A. Both sides elected me.

     Q. Did the Tolliver faction support you?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. Did the Martin faction support you?

     A. A great many of them.

     Q. That is the only time they have ever agreed?

     A. I guess so.

     Q. Did the leaders on both sides support you?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. Have you heard any complaint against your Circuit Judge?

     A. Yes, sir. I have heard complaint. I have never seen a man yet but
what there was complaint against him.

     Q. What do they complain of?

     A. There are two parties and some complain that he shows a little more
leniency to one than to the other.

     Q. Do you attend his court?

     A. No, sir.

     Q. Have you ever been in court while he was holding court?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. Did you ever see any partiality?

     A. No, sir.

     Q. Does the Judge keep good order?

     A. Yes sir.

     Q. Do you hold the Quarterly Court?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. Do they ever go down to the tavern and cuss when you decide against
them?

     A. I don't know; I never inquired about it.'

     Q. Did you ever take anybody out of jail and try them when they could
not give bond?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. How did you generally find them, guilty or not guilty?

     A. Some guilty and cleared some dependent on the proof.

     Q. Do you know a man by the name of Jack Mockaby?

     A. Yes, very well.

     Q. Did he ever get in jail?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. What was he indicted for?

     A. Carrying a pistol.

     Q. Was he ever in jail?

     A. Yes sir.

     Q. Who brought him before you?

     A. The Sheriff or Jailer.

     Q. Was he the man who shot in the house?

     A. No, sir.

     Q. Could Jack Mockaby give bond?

     A. He gave a bond, but they gave it up.

     Q. The man I am after is the man who was put in jail and turned out.

     A. That is Bill Trumbo.

     Q. What was your judgment on Bill Trumbo? What did you find him guilty
of?

     A. $50 and 30 days imprisonment.

     Q. How did he get out?

     A. I do not know; I was not here.

     Q. Did you grant him a new trial?

     A. I do not know; I may have said I would, after he was out of jail. It
appears to me like that. I believe I told Boone Logan that.

     Q. You gave him a new trial?

     A. I have never had any other trial.

     Q. Did you tell his attorney he might have a new trial?

     A. I may have done it. I don't recollect.

     Q. Do you think the law can be enforced in this county now?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. Is there any people away from this county and afraid to come back?

     A. I do not know. I think we can have peace now. I think no man need be
afraid if he comes here and behaves.

     Q. And suppose he didn't behave himself?

     A. A man is not safe anywhere if he don't behave himself.

     Q. I as man did not behave himself could he get a fair trial here?

     A. I think so.

     Q. Do you think one of the Tolliver faction could get a fair trial in
this county?

     A. I think so.

     Q. Do you think one of the Martins could get a fair trial?

     A. Yes, sir.

     Q. Were any of them ever convicted--either Martin or Tolliver?

     A. Not that I recollect of.

     Q. They all had fair trials?
     A. As far as I know.
We do not know of Judge Stewart.s other involvement with the parties. His daughter, Catherine, did marry Allan T. Day. He was closely associated with the Tollivers. This fact could not have been welcome news to Judge Stewart.
James and his wife are buried in the Dawson Cemetery in Rowan County. The Dawson Cemetery is located near Elliotsville. From Morehead, take Route 32 East to Elliotsville, go left on Open Fork Road for three miles and then go left on Dawson Cemetery Road.

Old Trumbo Photo - Iowa

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows an older man, and is labeled on the reverse "J.E. Trumbo, Bedford, Iowa". [The first initial could also be another letter.] The photo was taken at a photo studio in Bedford Iowa, likely during the early 1900s. Maybe someone will recognize their ancestor.

Attached is a copy of the photo. If this is one of your ancestors, please contact me.

Donald, my wife is descended from Martha Trumbo of Monroe County Mo. In 1866, she married George Robert Lewellen. Martha died in 1891 in Monroe County and she is burried (without a tombstone) in Union Church cemetery in Union Township Monroe County. They had four children, one of which was named Jacob (my wife's grandfather). And he was probably named for both Jacob Trumbo and a long line of Jacob Lewellens. I have been searching for Martha's parents and found this post and the information on your web site. I would appreciate any additional information you might have about Jacob Trumbo and family.
