Hi there - I was wondering if you ever found any more information on your Tull relatives? Do you know anything about Sophia Tull, wife of William Tull? There are a few forgotten stones in a small patch of woods (Bishopville, MD - Worchester county). Sophia lived from 1787 - 1871 and on the headstone it says wife of William Tull. It's always bothered me no one knows who they are so I've been trying to research these folks. Thanks, Andrea

Hi, It's James Tull b.1783/5 in East Meon married to a Hannah (Carpenter) He was a Bricklayer. I cannot find any evidence of marriage and they are only together in one census 1851 I think and the rest of the time he is lodging with people. I have searched records till I am dizzy but cannot find marriage, nor birth, nor a Hannah Carpenter (unless this was her second marriage?) Interesting there is a James Tull who kept getting arrested for burglary in Alton, Hampshire and I am beginning to wonder if it was him? just a mad hunch. Right, rambled on enough. Hope you can help
Robyn

Thomas Tull and Richard Tull apparently came together from the Berkshires in England. Thomas married twice.
Native American ancestry in OK/KS Tulls

My great-great grandfather was Gurley Harrison Tull b. 8-31-1888 in Washington Co., Oklahoma Territory. He married Ida Mae Arnold (b. 8-20-1888 in Montgomery Co., KS) on 10-23-1905. My grandfather claims to have Native American ancestry (and looks it :)) but I am having trouble finding any proof. I have info all the way back to a Tubman Tull (b. about 1800 in VA) who married Maria Lowe in Pendleton Co., KY on July 25, 1827 but I am not sure where the Native American blood starts. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

Megan
Hi, Megan,

My husband's great-grandparents were Thomas Barton Tulland Martha Jane Barger Tull. There is also a claim to Native American ancestry in this family, but we have not been able to find it. Other cousins have also been searching without any luck. Seems there must be some truth in the claim, but where???

James TULL c1793 NC- after 1870 ? Hardeman Co.,TN

Dear Tull List,

There has been recent discussion on Roy Juch’s Tull list regarding this James Tull (c1793 NC and died after 1870 probably Hardman County, TN). Here are my research notes on James Tull. There have been discussions for at least the last 20+ years to tie James Tull to Mary Martha Noble as well as other TULL families. I don’t find any indication he was connected to Mary Martha Noble Tull. These notes do not answer the question of who is James Tull . They only invite many more questions.

Who is James Tull?

According to census records he could have the following birth years:
1850 census Hardeman Co., TN he is age 57 so born cir 1793 NC
1860 census Hardeman Co., TN he is age 66 so born cir 1794 NC (this is consistent with 1850 census as census is taken in different months.
1870 census Hardeman Co., TN he is age 73 so born cir 1797 NC
1880 census : have not located James Tull who would be between 83-87 years of age

This James Tull lives with the Faucett/Fawcett/Fossett family of Hardeman Co., TN all three census years.
The Fawcett family is living in Madison Co., TN 1840 census and they have a male in their household who could possibly be JAMES TULL. The 1840 census does not provide names of household members, so we do not know who this man is.

James Tull’s occupation is Carpenter according to the census records.

Since we do not know who James Tull is or belongs to let’s look at his closest associates:

The family of John Burnside Fawcett :

John Burnside Fawcett is born 27 Dec 1802 Orange County, NC

Marriage bond with Betsey BEASLEY 21 June 1828 Orange County, NC with bondsman as Thomas HURDLE
John Burnside Fawcett is allegedly son of Thomas FAWCETT and Ruth BURNSIDE of Orange Co., NC.

Mary Elizabeth “Betsey” Beasely’s parents are unknown to me at this time. There is a Merrill Beasley living in Orange
County, NC- married 1807 and on 1820 Orange County, NC census has daughter correct age to be Betsey. This Merrill Beasely later moves and dies in Fayette County, Tennessee.

According to Mary Fawcett’s obit she was born 1810 in Hillsboro, NC. Hillsboro is in Orange County.

John Burnside Fawcett is a millwright and farmer. He was also the Magistrate of Hardeman Co., TN County Court 1866-1873 and was the clerk of Clover Creek Baptist Church.

The family lived south of what is now Silerton Rd in North East Hardeman County, TN.

John B. and Mary had 12 children between 1828 and 1854. The children’s place of birth indicate they moved from Orange County, NC to Madison County, TN btw 1837 and 1839. They are living in Hardeman County by 1845. The children married into the following families:
Glass, Huddleston, Cox, Hornsby, Mayfield, Deming, Bradford, and Grace

To date haven’t located any TULL records in Orange County, NC research.

At this time do not find any blood relation to the FAWCETT family.

Brief timeline for James Tull
Born 1793-1797 somewhere in North Carolina
Possibly 1840 living in Madison County, TN (this is a stretch and just a guess)
1850-1870 lives with John Burnside Fawcett family in North East Hardeman County, Tennessee
died after 1870 possibly Hardeman Co., TN

John B. and Mary E. Fawcett are buried in Fawcett Cemetery, Hardeman County, TN. The Cemetery is about 100 yards from their homeplace and there aren’t any headstones in existence at this time.

One son died as a Confederate Soldier during the War.
2 sons were medical doctors
1 son was a minister

An additional note regarding Mary Martha Noble Tull. This family is located in Southern Hardeman
County, TN a from 1840-1860. Mary Martha Tull moves to Van Zandt County, TX with her sons, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Tull. She is buried in Texas. Mary Martha’s son, Ervin/Irvin C. Tull moves to Lauderdale County, TN by 1870. Elizabeth Tull, mother of Jasper Newton, Noble Dennis, Henry Jackson, William Morgan and Nancy Tull Crange moves to McNairy County, TN by 1866. Elizabeth does have descendants who lived (and still live) near Silerton in Hardeman County, but in the late 19th and then into the 20th century- not in James TULL’s timeframe as far as I can tell by the records.

Seeking my elusive Tull’s,

Margaret Tull
Selmer, TN
Cen57402@centurytel.net
