I am trying to trace my grandfather Joseph Tullis. I have his burial date and his nmarriage details, but cannot find anything else on him. He was married to Catherine Morris in 1920. They had 5 children: Agnes M, Irene, Dorothy, Olive and Wilfred. He died in 1963, when I was 5. I don't have any living relatives that I can ask, so if anyone can help I will be eternally grateful.

I am Jewell Pelton's granddaughter, Nadine Pelton Dolan. The person that responded to you sent my father's obituary to you. My grandmother's father was Rufus. She had 2 brothers, Art and Claude. Her mother is buried in Oklahoma, but I do not remember her name. Rufus, I was told, was married 3 or 4 times. My father had 2 brothers, Howard, who died as a teenager from spinal mengittis, and Ross who died in a farming accident in Burdett, Ks. in the 1980's. His wife, Lelia, still lives there. Dad also had 2 sisters--Helen who died in the 1960's and had never married, and Dorothy Pelton Sanders who died in Aug 2001 from breast cancer. I hope this helps.

Re: alexander tullis

Hello! I was born in 1946, and named Dorothy Lilian Tullis. My Grandfather, Father, brother and nephew are all called Alexander Tullis. As children, Alex and I were always given the impression that Alexander was a family name going way back through the generations, and we were very proud of our surname.Sadly,Grandfather had already died in 1942,and our father died suddenly of a heart attack in March 1947. I have no photographs of Grandfather, and only a few of Dad. I was told by my mother that my Great Grandmother had a strong Scottish accent, and I believe that the family came to South Shields, County Durham (maybe from Fifeshire)in the late 1800's. Grandfather was married in South Shields in 1904, and became manager of a shipyard on the river Tyne. When he died, my father took over his job, and then began a company called Jarrow Welding and Boier Company, making ship's boilers. My brother Alex is a retired dentist, living in London, and I am a teacher, although I may decide to retire at the end of next school year. I hope that when I retire,I will have the time to explore my branch of the Tullis family. Greetings from one Tullis to another! Dorothy Crow(nee Tullis)

Re: Tullis-Pelton family

From what I have learned, Jewell E. Tullis was born on 5 Sep 1896 in Oklahoma, she married Arthur Henry Pelton about 1916, they had at least 5 children, and Jewell died on 17 June 1980. She and Arthur are both buried in the Ford Cemetery, Ford Co, Kansas. See http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ks/county/ford/cemeteries/fordce.... The family of Arthur and Jewell appears in the 1930 census in Ford Co, Kansas. Their children listed at that time were Lowell H. (age 13), Howard W. (age 11), Dorothy E. (age 9), Helen J. (age 4), and Ross A. (age 3). All were born in Kansas. You might have seen the obituary for Lowell H. Pelton at http://webbitt.com/volga/lower/obitsp.htm which states that he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

So who were the parents of Jewell E. Tullis? I've found at least one other researcher who has identified her father as Rufus W. Tullis (born 1869 in Indiana, died 1963 in Kansas). I found the Rufus Tullis family in the 1910 census in Cherokee Co, Kansas, but the only children listed are sons Arthur (age 12) and Claude/Claudy (age 7). If Jewell was born in 1896, it seems like she should be there too. However, one possible explanation is found in the household of the parents of Rufus Tullis: Jonah Tullis and his wife Nancy E. They appear in the 1910 census in Finney Co, Kansas. They're older-- Jonah was born in 1840 and Nancy in 1847. Their children are all grown, but in this census they have a 13-year-old grand-daughter, "Edna", living with them. I believe this must be Jewell. She's their only grand-daughter I know who's anywhere near the right age. So I believe her full name was Jewell Edna Tullis.

You can see my information on Jonah Tullis and his ancestors at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d.... His Tullis line eventually traces back to Moses Tullis (b. 1720s) and his wife Mary Elizabeth, who were also my distant ancestors.

Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me directly (TomTullis@aol.com).

I think maybe it's because none of us has ever seen any photos of them or their siblings. My great-grandmother, Sarah Francis Tullis Parker (daughter of Andrew Jackson Tullis) died before I was born, but my mom's youngest sister says she remembers her being darker complexioned with dark hair. In fact, out of the six, my aunt inherited the Native American traits. She has (even at age 58) black hair and looks like she's been lying out in the sun for a month. Her eldest son also inherited these traits, whereas, the rest of us took after the Irish side of my grandmother's family. Please do email the photos when you can. My email address is: krgeorge@uark.edu

Sorry, but I don't have any information on Rebecca other than what has already been stated. However, since Rebecca is connected to my Tullis branch, I would love to see a photo of her. Do you have it scanned where you can email it to me? If not, that's okay. Good luck with your searching.

There was a Martha Jane Tullis, b. 1867 in Mo. She
was the daughter of Isaac Thomas Tullis, a preacher,
whom I guess you could say was a circuit riding
preacher. He preached for the Church of Christ,
formerly known as a the Campbellites. Also, I under-
stand for the Christian Church. Born in Warren Co. Ohio, married Sarah Epperson, first time, had a couple of kids, divorced, married Charity Jane Norris,
had about 7 more children.
Martha Jane Tullis, married Armstead M. Hollowwa, and they became my great-grandparents. Martha died 2/22/1900, and Armstead died a few years later. They were very young. They had 7 children. Armstead had one more short marriage before his death, and possibly 1 more child. Know lots more if this connects
with anyone's Martha Tullis.

Isaac Tullis is my g great grandfather also. He first married Sarah Epperson, and had several children. One of those children was Martha Jane Tullis. Martha married my g- grandfather, Armstead Morgan Hollowwa (Holloway). When Sarah died, Isaac married Charity Norris and they had children also.
I have census record showing Isaac and Charity living in or near Weatherford, Texas in 1900, in the household with Isaac's daughter, Susan and her husband, William Lowe. Armstead Morgan Hollowwa was born in March, 1860, about the same year that Charity and Isaac began having children.
I have this tree on my other computer and will communicate
with you by email if interested.
Please answer at the email address listed here.
I was recently doing some research on Tullises in Iowa and found the following in the 1860 & 1870 censuses for Green Twp, Wapello Co., Iowa:
Michael Tullis, b@1814 OH & wife, Rebecca(Leonard), b@1822 OH married 11/21/1838 West Point, Tippecanoe Co., IN
children:
Margaret b 8/26/1839
Charles b.1/21/1841
Alice Maris(e/a?) b.1/18/1842
Hannah b.4/24/1844
Ellen b.8/15/1846
John Henry b.6/23/1849
Martha Jeannette b.12/11/1850
Michael C. b.6/14/1853
Freeman Ford b.11/05/1855
Manford Hayden b.7/28/1857
Annie B. b.1/02/1861
Rebecca Harriet b.6/16/1863
Michael and John were sons of Jesse H. Tullis & Sarah Ann Daniels.
Jesse was the son of Michael Ezra Tullis and his 1st wife, Mary Humphries
and, yes, Telitha was with them in the 1870 census. Most likely, it was because John, Michael's brother, had just died in 1870, 8/20/1870 to be exact, in Ottumwa, Iowa.
John and Talitha are found in the 1860 census for
Osage, Henry Co., MO
I have found this onfo on John Tullis
He married (1st) Elizabeth Galloway
they had 1 child, William, born @ 1837
He married(2nd) Telitha Leonard. 1/28/1837 in Tippecanoe Co., IN
they had:
Elizabeth b @ 1838 IN
Richard W. b. @ 1839 IN
Jonathan b. @ 1841 MO
Charles Wesley b. @ 1843 MO
Mary A. b, @ 1844 MO
Anna b. @ 1846 IA
Andrew Jackson b. @ 1848 IA
Aaron T. b. @ 1850 IA
Michael b. @ 1852 IA
Lucinda b. @ 1854 IA
Hannah b. @ 1857 MO
possibly others until John's death in 1870, but these are all that I know about. Please share with the other lady who was researching your lines.
Don't know if you have this info or not, but thought I would send along what I had. I am also descended from Tullises in Iowa, but not this line. My line was in Lee Co., Iowa

Re: Vincent Tullis

Kathy,
I am researching Early Tullises in Lee Co. Iowa where my ancestor was for a few years back in 1840-43. I ran across two marriage records for the following that you might be interested in:
Vincent Tullis (23) m. Miss Margaret J. Abbott
10/11/1848 Lee Co., Iowa
Margaret Tullis M. Isaac Golland Jr
2/28/1850 Lee Co., Iowa

Since the "Vincent" name is so rare in the Tullis line, I thought maybe this was a son of Vincent & Betsy. However, I don't see him listed as their child in the 1850 census for the family so I don't think it is his son.
There was an Amos Tullis in Lee Co. in the 1840 census who could be the father, and he was born between 1790 and 1800 according to the 1840 census. He is not in the 1850 cencus but a Polly Tullis(widow) appears. Polly is a common nickname for Mary and I believe this to be Mary Epperson, Amos' wife, although I can't prove it yet, and that Amos in the 1840 census is the son of William and Mary Tabitha Teanis, who is the son of Moses and Mary E. Van Dyke. He is the only Amos born during the right time to be their son, Amos born circa 1796, that I have been able to locate. If that is so, it would make your Vincent and this Amos first cousins, since Vincent's father, Amos, and William are brothers.
I would like to pursue this avenue of investigation as I feel that there may be some kind of connection since the name "Vincent" is so rare in the Tullis line. Do you have any other information on Vincent's family?

I just noticed a fact that I had overlooked in my previous email.
In 1850, Vincent and Betsy were still in Ohio and Vincent was only 34!
Also, Vincent in Lee Co., Iowa got married in 1848 - of course he wouldn't have been with Vincent and Betsy, even if he had been their son! But, being 23 in 1848, when Vincent (w/Betsy) would have only been 32 - just 9 years older than this Lee co. Vincent. If Vincent and Amos were close first cousins, Amos might want to name a son after him, even if the lad were only 9 years old at the time??? ya' think?????
Otherwise, I am stymied as to who this Vincent is! And who the Amos actually was in the 1840 Lee Co. census?!

Re: Martha Tullis, daughter of circuit riding preacher

I think there's a very good chance that Martha Tullis was a daughter of Amos Tullis (b. 1772 in VA) and his second wife, Margaret Creamer (b. abt. 1783 in PA). Amos was a child of Moses Tullis (b. abt 1726) and his wife Mary Elizabeth. I did not previously know of a Martha as a daughter of theirs, but it is certainly logical. Amos married Margaret Creamer on 19 Dec 1815 in Warren Co, OH. They had a child, Vincent, born about 1816. The next child I knew about was David Henry, b. 1821. It's quite possible that Martha was a daughter, b. 1818, in between those two.

Amos and Margaret, along with some of their children and grandchildren, appear in the 1860 census in LaSalle Co, IL. Martha and her husband, J. C. Coghlan, and their family, also appear in the 1860 census in LaSalle Co, IL. Their oldest child is a Martha Coghlan, obviously named for her mother. The next child is Margaret, I suspect named for Martha's mother, Margaret. The next child is Amos, I suspect named for Martha's father, Amos. Then Washington that you mentioned, b. abt. 1852.

Although I can't remember seeing any indication that Amos Tullis was an itinerant Methodist minister, it seems quite possible. His grandson, Amos King Tullis (b. 1837) was a Methodist minister and a Chaplain in Union Army during the Civil War.

It is beleived that she was with her grandmother's family (The Dunn's). Sometimes she is listed as Rhea Dunn and another time found her as Rhea Tullis. Rhea would have been born about 1897.

Since there were several men with the name John and several with the name Richard ... please give some more info. Richard Tullos (son of Claudius and brother to John) was born 29 March 1667, in Northumberland County, died in 1734 or 1735 in Northumberland County. If Richard had children ... their names were probably John Tullos (died in 1764/65) and Richard (Dodson?) Tullos (who may have been adopted).
Please write with more details. I have several contacts on some of the lines from Claud. Mary Cockrell

CLAUD TULLOS 1600's VA research material

I have a lot of research material provided by Mr. C. D. Cochran in 1991. I will be pleased to share any of this material with anyone working the Tullis or Tullos line. I've made digital copies of all pages. It also includes some material by Dr. Rees Edgar Tulloss and also a handwritten letter by Mrs Caroline Price Wilson (Mrs. Walter S. Wilson) ... the letter is dated 1923 and was written to Dr. Tulloss regarding their joint family research on this family. Mrs. Wilson was primarily working on the John Tullos families of Effingham County, GA. Any interested researchers may contact me at ___mrycckrll@hotmail.com_____

I am looking for Stephen Tullis who fathered Rhoda Tullis ca 1870 Delaware Co, IN. She married Charles Campbell in 1896. Stephen's family came from Ohio, while Charles' family were specifically \from Miami Co, OH. Any connection appreciated. Thanks.

Stephen Tullis b. ca 1851 Ohio, m. 5 April 1873 to Amanda E. Wilson ("Mandy") in Wells, IN. Known Children, Grant b. 1872 IN, Rhoda A. b. Jan 1874 IN, William b. July 1876. All appear in the 1880 census in Delaware Co, IN. By 1900 the only one I find is William, living in Muncy, IN.

On 30 Aug 1896, Rhoda m. Charles T. Campbell in Delaware Co, IN. I find Charles T. Campbell just married (or remarried) and living in Huntington, IN, in the 1900 census, with a 2 year old child, Paul.

I would like to find out if this Paul was Rhoda's child.

Charles T. Campbell's grandfather, Adam Campbell 1802-1872, along with his father Abraham and brothers Daniel, Abraham, etc., lived in Miami County, OH, until Adam moved to Delaware Co, IN ca 1832. He married 1st Elizabeth Kepper, then Judith Luce. Judith's sister Martha m. Abraham Campbell. They were daughters of Benjamin Luce and Ann Ohio "Nancy" Gerard. The Gerard and Luce families were long of Miami County, Oh. I thought there might be a Miami Co, Oh, connection with the Tullis family.
