Looks like a lot of George Tunis's born in that time frame, but according to the 1900, 1910, 1920 census, your George Anthony Tunis was born in Kansas on 1 Oct 1877 (per WWI draft reg.).

In the 1880 census of Belmont twp., Kingman county, Kansas, there is a George Tunis (age2). His parents are Felix Tunis, age 29, born France. And his mother is Elsy, age 24, born in New York.

Might this Felix Tunis be your ancestor? born 1848 France

His fathers name was George Anthony Tunis and his mother's name was Maggie Mae Johnson Tunis. That is as far as I have found or can remember at the time.

Richard Tunis, Stockton, CA. 1804-1872 ?

Stockton Daily Independent
March 1872
Location: Stockton
Description: Mar. 11-16, 1872

>>Monday, 11 Mar 1872<<
STARTLING SUICIDE -- Richard TUNIS, one of Stockton’s pioneers and a highly respectable citizen, committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a Colt’s navy revolver, on Saturday morning last. The act was committed at the dwelling of I.V. LEFFLER, on Stanislaus street, between Weber avenue and Channel street, to which house he had been removed the previous day in order the better to receive such care and attention as his debilitated condition demanded. Coroner BOND was notified of the sad occurrence, and that officer took charge of the body and summoned a jury of inquest.

RICHARD TUNIS’ WILL -- Richard TUNIS, deceased, has left $500 in gold coin to the Ladies’ Benevolent Association of this city, the sum to be deposited in the Savings and Loan Society’s bank and to be drawn semi-annually, principle and interest, at the option of the legatees. He leaves $200 to John NYE, and the remainder of his property goes to Lloyd J. DAVIS and 3 daughter, Philadelphia.

Anyone know the family of this Richard and next mentioned Captain Benjamin Tunis?

Captain Benjamin TUNIS, death notice 1859 CA

Stockton Daily Argus
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
19-24 Dec 1859
>>Friday, 23 Dec 1859<<

- --------------------------------------
DIED -- in the city of Stockton, of Consumption, Benjamin TUNIS, in the
65th year of his age. [His friends and acquaintances are respectfully
invited to attend his funeral from St. John's church on Saturday, 24th
inst., at 11 o'clock a.m. The Masonic Fraternity are respectfully invited
to attend.]

DEATH of a PIONEER STOCKTONIAN -- Captain Benjamin TUNIS, whose death we
announce in another column, was a native of Philadelphia, and one of the
Pioneers of Stockton. His father was a soldier of the Revolution, and the
deceased was a veteran of the war of 1812 and 1815, having fought under the
gallant commander DECATUR.

Subsequent to the war, he joined the mercantile marine, and from a boy
"before the mast" became one of the most able and enterprising ship masters
that sailed out of the port of New York. During the financial crisis
consequent upon the removal of the deposits from the bank of the United
States he abandoned the Ocean, and settled in the State of Missouri, where
he resided for a period of 15 years, enjoying during that time the
confidence and respect of all with whom he had any dealings. In the Spring
of 1849 he arrived in Stockton, and, save a brief absence to the East, has
been a resident of the City and County ever since.

Capt. TUNIS was a man of the strictest integrity, high minded and
honorable, plain and unobtrusive in his manners, and like all old "Tars,"
found of dwelling upon those incidents with which he was identified in his
earlier days. The funeral of deceased will take place tomorrow (Saturday)
morning at 11 o'clock, from St. John's Church, and the remains will be
deposited in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery.
- ---------------------------------------
I have no connection to the Tunis line.

However, contact either Dee Sardoc deesar@frontiernet.net or Betty [betty@unisette.com].
"The Minnie I knew" This Minnie (maiden name unknown) was born about 1840. She did live in Philadelphia in 1880 when that census was done, but she was born in NC and married both times in Norfolk, VA. Thank you also to the person who found her second husband's, Andrew Sigourney, cemetery information. As I said, what I really need to know is if she first married (early 1860s) John Tunis or Lewis Tunis (brothers) because we want to know our journal writer's father's name. Thanks.

I am not related to this person but am cataloging a travel journal of one of his descendants, the daughter of a Minnie who must have married either John E. Tunis (1834-1866) or Lewis (1841-1864). We are most anxious to know which man was Minnie's husband and what was her maiden name. Thank you so much for posting the cemetery dates to this mailing list. Minnie then married Andrew Sigourney, also of the 54th Regt. VA Militia, but he died before 1870 too.

Hi Fawn: This is the best I can do, try 1860-1870 census in Ohio, and come up with Alma Tunis with father Madison Tunis. 1900 Census show her married to Wm Whikehart and her name is Bella. So I think that is pretty close. Wm died 3-4-1932. Get a copy of his death certificate and that should help some. Wish I could help more but they are not part of my Tunis Family.
I have just come from Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. Andrew Sigourney is buried on a lot owned by "Mrs. Sigourney"
There are 5 interments on the lot as follows:

1. Andrew Sigourney grave #2 1827-1869 Tombstone has 6 Nov 1827-9 Feb 1869

2. Minnie E. King grave #1 1841-1894 Tombstone has 24 Mar 1841-1 May 1894

3. John E. Tunis grave #6 1834-1866 Tombstone has John E. Tunis, son of John & Rebecca B. Tunis 23 Jun 1834-23/28 Feb 1866

4. John W. Tunis grave #7 1861-1863 Tombstone broken & unreadable)

5. Carolina E. J. Tunis grave #6 (I believe this may be a mistake because John E. Tunis is in grave 6 and is an adult)If she were a child she may be in grave #7 with John W. Tunis or if she was an adult, she is in another grave. There is no tombstone.

So, Minnie unknown Sigournry must have married a King, also. I will have to goo to the Circuit Court Office to find the marriages when I have time. Give me your email address and I will send you pictures of the lot and interment cards. Mine is timbonney@cox.net.

I am interested in what else you know about the Tunis' and about the journal.

Tim Bonney

Captain Benjamin TUNIS, whose death we announce in another column, was a native of Philadelphia, and one of the Pioneers of Stockton. His father was a soldier of the Revolution, and the deceased was a veteran of the war of 1812 and 1815, having fought under the gallant commander DECATUR.

I realize you probably posted this from the kindness of your heart, helping others. If you have access to this newspaper? Could you look-up the other column they speak of? I'm trying to connect this Benjamin to the proper TUNIS family from Philadelphia.

Thanks for posting this!!!!!
Nelson

I guess him and Polly could've had 3 children between 20 Jan 1855 & 9 Mar 1859. I'll check closer to see where this John Tunis possibly died.

From ancestry.com, Illinois Marriage 1851-1900 Record shows John Tunis & Polly Stone married in Randolph county, 20 Jan 1855?
I have a Priscilla Tunis b. 1853 Ontario, Canada. Daughter of William Tunis & Maria Martha Filman. Priscilla's grandparents were Rees Tunis b. 1788 & Sarah Binkley b. 1789 who came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. Rees and his brother Anthony came to Canada after the Revolutionary War. Rees was son of Anthony Tunis & Mary Thomas of Merion Meeting, Montgomery county, Pa. Anthony was son of Abraham Tunis and Hannah Humphreys of same place. Abraham was son of Anthony Tunis, b. 1693 at Germantown, Philadelphia county, Pa. & Mary Susana Williams, b. 1694 at Somerhausen, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania. This Anthony was the son of Abraham Tunes & Beatrix Boetzen Luckens whom were one of the original 13 settlers to Germantown, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania in 1683. I would love to have the descendency of Priscilla if this is the one who married Lafferty.

I don't know anything about guns, but I have a Dr. Joseph Price Tunis, b. 7 Feb 1866 in Philadelphia, Pa. who served in the Spanish American War as a Surgeon. He was a son of Thomas Roberts Tunis, b. 14 Jun 1828 & Anna Callender Price, b. 3 Nov 1834. I have his ancestry back to 1525 in Holland.

I'm still working on Dr. Tunis's descendency, but I know he married Annis Wister Rossell abt. 1903. They had two daughters, Annis L. Tunis, b. abt. 1904 & Lydia W. Tunis, b. abt. 1907. This is where my descendency of them stops. In 1930 they were residing in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia county, Pa.

Do you think this gun would be from this era? If so, and you still have it? I would be much interested in purchasing it, as I am collecting family heirlooms. I have many Civil War ancestors, but can't find any of their stuff.
