Tunstalls of Bradford

I am looking for any information about my family past in the UK. I know that Francis Tunstall sailed to Melbourne, Australia in 1857 and his father was Thomas Tunstall and his mother was Mary Wood. He was recorded in the 1851 census in Bradford as a machine comb maker. any information about where the family came from before then would be great.

Linda
I was talking today to my wife's ex-step father-in-law. He knows that I have done genealogy before and asked if I could find his grandfather's father. My subscription to Ancestry. com has run out. So I hope you can help me. His name is Charles Smith. His father was Clyde Smith and his grandfather was Charles (Ivy) Ivanhoe Smith. He was hoping I could come up with his great grandfather's name. I found you on rootsweb where I see your mother was about the same generation as our Charles. Do you know the name of the great grandfather.
Charley

I believe Doug was referring to the State of Alabama. A branch of the Virginia Tunstalls migrated to Baldwin County, Alabama... George Brooke Tunstall arrived in present day Northwest Florida (Pensacola) about 1821 when he set up the first American newspaper in Florida, "The Floridian". He then married and became a wealthy planter in northern Baldwin County.

Doug,

Do you know where "Alabama" is or the name of the hunt club? Do you know which Tunstalls lived there? Thomas C. Tunstall (born about 1795), his children, and his grandchildren were all born just below Tunstall Station in a place called Black Creek. I'm wondering if "Alabama" is in Black Creek, New Kent Co. Thanks for the hint.

Hello! My Tunstall ancestors are from New Kent, VA. King and Queen County broke away from New Kent at some point. There are several books that mention the origin of the Virginia Tunstalls: The First Tunstalls in Virginia by Whit Morris, First Five Hundred Families in America, and Americans of Royal Descent by Charles H. Browning(traces from Edward I to Richard Tunstall of New Kent, Virginia). Your Mary was here extremely early. I'm almost positive she was the daughter of Edmund Tunstall (brother of aforementioned Richard Tunstall). She's mentioned in Americans of Royal Descent. I have a type-up of it at home, if you'd like a copy.

P.s. If you happen across a Thomas C. Tunstall born circa 1795 in New Kent, Virginia, please pass the info along. :-)

I estimate that Peter died between 1871 and 1891. The only child I know of was John born 18th July 1828.

Thanks, Jan

Hello,There are Tunstall in my family too! I don't know his name. All I know he was my great-great grandfather. He came from England and he was 9 years old when Lincoln became president, he died when I was 9 months old and I will be 53 soon.My Mom can't remember his name,She is getting along in age. He must of had a daughter Beatrice Smith, because she is my Grandmother and she died, when my Mom was 9 years old. If any of this helps you, that's great because it could help me too. Wouldn't it be funny if we were related. If you e-mail me I will tell you more if I find out. Thanks, Linda

Commentary on the parentage of Thomas Todd TUNSTALL

COMMENTARY ON THE PARENTAGE OF THOMAS TODD TUNSTALL
(Michelle Woodham - Sept.25, 2006)

Family oral tradition states that Thomas Todd Tunstall was the son of Colonel Thomas Tunstall, Jr and Mildred Todd Tunstall. To date, there is no definitive proof that this is the case.

Thomas Tunstall, Jr. removed from Virginia to Frankfort in 1794, and as early as 1795, tax records show them in residence in Frankfort, Franklin County. His service as Clerk of the U. S. District Court in Frankfort, 1796 to 1807, is also a matter of record. He resided in Franklin County, Kentucky with his wife Mildred Todd Tunstall and son Henry Tunstall. Their wills and probate records are recorded there.

Thomas Tunstall's will is recorded June 18, 1810. He names his friend Thomas Todd (Milly's brother) as his executor and his wife Milly Tunstall as executrix. He leaves his entire estate to his wife Milly with a $50 annuity to his son Henry (who also died in 1810 before his father's will was proven.) There is no mention of any other children. It would certainly seem likely that if Thomas Todd Tunstall was indeed his son, then there would have been some mention of him.

There is an 1810 US Census entry for Mille Tunstall in Frankfort, Franklin Co, Kentucky. Enumerated are 1 female over 45 (Milly - age abt. 56), 1 female 26-44 (a niece?), 1 female 10-15, 1 male under 10. There are no census entries for a Thomas Tunstall, and he obviously is not living with Milly. In 1810, Thomas would have been about 20 years old, and should have been listed with his mother.

Mildred Todd Tunstall's will written May 25, 1831 and proven at the Franklin County Court November term 1837, leaves her entire estate to Mrs Maria K Crittenden, the widow and children of her nephew, Thomas Harris Todd, son of Justice Thomas Todd. Mildred's will mentions no children, her son Henry having already died. If there were other children, Mildred most certainly would have named them in her will, and if Henry had surviving issue, Mildred would have left her estate to them. There is nothing in either will to indicate that Thomas Todd Tunstall was a son of Thomas, Jr and Mildred Todd Tunstall.

So who were the parents of Thomas Todd Tunstall?

Whit Morris, in his "The First Tunstalls in Virginia and Some of Their Descendants" copyright 1950, The Clegg Company, San Antonio, Texas p. 26 states "...one William Tunstall married Jane Webb in Pittsylvania County, Virginia 20 July 1789, with bondsman Thomas Tunstall" (his brother?)
And on Jan. 9, 1791 William Webb wrote in a letter to his brother James Webb of Essex County "Sister Tunstall has a fine boy of 6 months old." This boy would have been born in July 1790.

There are many conflicting records concerning Thomas Todd Tunstall's date of birth.
1.His grave stone reads, "Died Nov. 7, 1862, Age 72 Years," placing his DOB as 1790.
2.Thomas Todd Tunstall's marriage to Mary Caboll, June 23, 1861, reports his age as 82 (obviously in error, probably should have been 72) placing his DOB as 1789.
3.The 1850 US Census Black River, Independence Co, Arkansas p326, reports his age as 63, placing his DOB as 1787.
4. The 1860 US Census Big Bottom, Independence Co, Arkansas p169, reports his age as 72, placing his DOB as 1788.
5.Thomas Todd Tunstall in Application for Suppl. Grant for his military service in the War of 1812, dated March 25, 1855, reported his age as 67, placing his DOB as 1788.
6.According to Ray Hunnicutt, Thomas Todd Tunstall's grandson, Watt Tunstall in an interview with Ray D Rains, October 1958, when Watt was almost 80, for an article which appeared in "Real West" July 1978, p. 22, said "Thomas Todd Tunstall was raised in Shelby County, Kentucky, where he joined Simrall's Cavalry in 1812 at age 21," placing his DOB as 1791.
7. In "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansas". Chicago, IL, USA: Goodspeed Publishers, 1889, p.23, his son David P. Tunstall said "Thomas T. Tunstall, was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., and when a boy removed with his parents to Shelby County, Ky., where he grew to mature years and learned the cabinet maker's trade, at which occupation he worked for a few years" and that he died "in November, 1863, at the age of seventy-six years". This would place his DOB as 1787. It is to be noted that in this biography, David P. Tunstall does not state who Thomas Todd Tunstall's parents were.

It is obvious why most researchers report Thomas Todd Tunstall's DOB as early as 1787. But, owing to the disparate record of his age and birth date, it is very possible he was born as late as 1790, and probable that he is the "fine boy of 6 months" written about in the letter from William to James Webb.

Thomas and Milly Todd Tunstall resided in Franklin County, Kentucky until their deaths. Whereas, all records indicate his brother, William J Tunstall resided in Shelby County. Testimony of his descendants is unanimous, Thomas Todd Tunstall was raised in Shelby County.

The names of the children of William J. Tunstall and Jane Meriwether Webb are taken from the Will of James M. Tunstall, executed Oct 13, 1817, wherein he names his sisters as Maria S., Lucinda, and Jane W., and his brothers as George William, Edmund and Thomas - a total of seven children including James M.

The 1810 US Census entry for William J Tunstall, Shelbyville, Shelby Co, Kentucky p241, lists

1 male under 10 (George?)
2 male 10-15 (Edmund, unknown?)
2 male 16-25 (James, Thomas?)
1 male 26-44 (William J)
2 female under 10 (Jane, Maria S)
1 female 10-15 (Lucinda)
0 female 16-25
1 female 26-44 (Jane)

In "History of Jefferson County, Illinois", Chicago: Globe Pub. Co., 1883, p.291 there is a very detailed account given of the Tunstall family. The "unknown author", obviously has a very good working knowlege of the layout of the town as it existed in 1883, and of the people who resided there at that time. (Please see the message board posting previous to this one for a transcription).

The "unknown author" states that Thomas T Tunstall came first in 1821, followed by the "old people" and his brothers: William Tunstall, Aunt Sally, Edmund, George and Jane Webb Tunstall. William's children correspond to those listed in James M. Tunstall's will dated 1817. Sister Maria S. had likely died before 1821 (this possibility was hinted at in the will), sister Lucinda had married Bennett Newton in 1820 and remained in Kentucky for several more years, and of course son James M. Tunstall was deceased. The remaining children, Thomas T., Edmund, George and Jane W. all removed from Kentucky to Jefferson Co, Illinois.

The History states "Tom's name was Thomas Todd." It also gives a detailed summary of his activities and adventures in Jefferson County, Illinois and his subsequent move to Arkansas, where he laid out the town of Jacksonport. Many of the references are to events much later than 1821. Julia Tunstall did marry John Boyers, but she wasn't even born until 1833 in Dota Creek, Arkansas, and they didn't marry until circa 1849. The unknown author speaks of the sons of Edmund "going South 30 years ago," and that Thomas Todd "died at Memphis during the war". It sounds as if the "unknown author" were a long standing resident of Mt. Vernon who stayed in touch with the Tunstalls long after they removed to Arkansas in 1827, when Thomas Todd purchased property in Chicot County, Arkansas. Perhaps the "History of Jefferson County, Illinois" was written by, or had contributions from a child or grandchild of Jane Webb Tunstall Adams, whose family remained in Jefferson County, Illinois. This might explain the intimate knowlege that the "unknown author" had of the Tunstall family, even after they removed to Arkansas.

There are questions as to the identity of "Aunt Sally Whorl". She was most likely the mother-in-law of Thomas Todd Tunstall, (the mother of his wife, Sarah Mary Worrall). It is possible that William's first wife, Jane Meriwther Webb was deceased. William may have met "Mrs. Whorl" through his daughter in law, and married. In any event, the "unknown author" was confused about the relationship, writing some 60 years later.

The naming of their first son, Thomas Todd Tunstall, obviously raises questions. Whit Morris, p. 26, quotes from a letter written more than one hundred years later in 1893, by Maria Tunstall Starling, wherein she says, "I am undecided about the relation of Col. William Tunstall's wife and the Todd family. I have often heard my husband's mother speak of it." Was Maria Starling addressing the myth then prevalent that Thomas Todd Tunstall was linked to the Todds?

Thomas Todd Tunstall could have been named for any number of Todds who resided in the same locale in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He could even be named for Thomas Todd, the brother of Mildred. Thomas Todd and William J. Tunstall both served in the Revolutionary War at the same time, they were near the same age, both were lawyers, and by 1791 Thomas Todd was a rising legal star. William Tunstall's brother Thomas was married to Mildred Todd. William and Thomas Todd most certainly knew each other well.

Of further note, are the names of Thomas Todd Tunstall's children by Sarah Mary Warld: 1. William Warld Tunstall (after his father, and wife's maiden name), 2. James Meriwether Tunstall (after his deceased brother), 3. Jane Tunstall (after his mother of sister), 4. George W Tunstall (after brother George William). Of his 17 children, not one of them is named Thomas, Mildred or Todd.

Further research is needed. Hopefully there exists a will for William J Tunstall. There are also land records to locate in Shelby Co, Kentucky and Jefferson Co, Illinois. But the data as it currently exists, suggests that Thomas Todd Tunstall is indeed the son of William J. Tunstall and Jane Meriwether Webb. I welcome any comments, or new primary documentation.

Michelle Woodham
mw4au@aol.com
