Hi Jack,
My name is Thomas Sewell Hines Jr.. My GG Grandfather was Wiley J. Hines Who, I think, Married Rebecca M. Turk in Baldwin County GA.on 2 Dec. 1845. My records show She was born 8 Dec. 1830 in GA. and died 22 Mar. 1865 in TN. possibly from complications of child birth. My G Grandfather was Thomas Turk Hines born in TN.
Some records I have seen show Rebecca Married Richard Hines 24 Dec. 1845. I don't know which is true. I would be very interested in any info. you might have on the Turk family from GA. Thank you

The Gleaves Family Association is attempting to gather as much information on the descendants of Matthew Gleaves (about 1725-1760, he died in Augusta County, Virginia) as possible.

We have traced the three sons to the present day but our research is lacking when it comes to his daughter Mary.

If you descend from this line, please go to gleavesfamily.com. Under the tab for Family History, click on “The Descendants of Matthew Gleaves” and open Chapter 7. If you can help us fill out what little information we have on the lineage of this family, it would be appreciated.

We have done a good bit of research on Thomas and Mary that is contained in Chapter 2 which may be of some help to others.

Dennis Glaves
In the 1851 census they live together with Sarah Turk on Pinions Farm , Maresfield Sussex. I wonder if your Lucy could be any relation?

Hello! So nice to hear from you. Are you speaking of your sister Johanna? I have been in contact with her, she has provided MUCH useful information! I have so much more to learn about the families, but I am almost ready to post information to a website. I just need to do some more research but hope to have something online in the summer or earlier. I am Cornelia's daughter-in-law, married to Ben! Your sister has my email address - I'm not sure I should post it here!
Take care!

Re: J. R. Cox Kills Tom Turk

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 16 August 1890...

Obituary

It is with sadness and deep regret we announce the death of Mr. J. T. Turk, He was shot at his home near Forney on Wednesday, August 6th, 1890.

A noble man has been taken from us; generous to a fault, always ready to help the poor and needy, while a call from a friend never passed unheeded. But he is gone; passed through the portals from whence there is no return. How hard to give him up; but, as our loss is his gain, we can only say "Lord, Thy will be done."

To his bereaved wife we would say: Although you many never more wait for Tommy's coming, nor listen for that well known footstep, remember, there is a place of meeting where sorrow and death never comes, and parting is not known. Our earthly home may be desolate but in the bright realms above, nothing but joy awaits us.

Mr. Turk was an affectionate father; how the little ones will miss papa, whose kind voice and smile made their little hearts rejoice. But bereft of your earthly parent, put your trust in your Heavenly Father, who has promised to be a father to the orphan.

To his brother and sister we tender the most heartfelt sympathy and may all be able to say...

A grateful homage may we yield.
With hearts resighed to Thee.
Has remains were taken to Willow Springs where he sweetly sleeps near his little boy.

Hi - My maiden name is Turk. I managed to find the Turk Surname Society on Rootsweb, not sure how I did it. But, by using that link I contacted Toni Turk. I also found him at www.the-turkfamily-of-blandingutah.com. I googled Turk Surname Society to find that address. While the information on that site seems to be from Poland (I haven't read it all), he sent me a PAF file showing my line back to the 1500's, Belgium. If you want to contact me, please use this address, lmr650@yahoo.com. Linda

In 2010 my wife and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. I have determined by that date I should turn over the management of the TURK Surname Society database to someone younger, who has the interest to see this effort continue and expand upon it. Ideally this would involve a collaborative effort among several genealogists. Those interested in transitioning into the leadership of this effort are invited to identify themselves.

J. R. Cox Kills Tom Turk

Appears in The Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 9 August 1890...

Forney, Texas, August 6 - This place was thrown into a fever of excitement this morning by the little son of J. T. Turk, who lives about 4 miles north of here, riding into town coatless and hatless after a doctor saying that his father had been shot. Drs. Stroud and Fowler left for the scene of the tragedy but found the victim dead on their arrival.

The circumstances of the killing as near as can be learned, are a follows: A Mr. J. R. Cox, engineer at Boardman & Short's gin, had started for Forney on a wagon with a Mr. Rogers. While passing Mr. Turk's farm and in front of his house Cox and Turk became involved in a quarrel when Cox shot twice at Turk, both shots taking effect in Turk's body. Turk succeeded in crawling through the fence toward home living only about twenty minutes. On their return to town Dr. Stroud and others overtook Cox coming toward town and brought him in and he is now in the hands of officers awaiting preliminary trial. Mr. Turk leaves a wife and several children.

His brother, Howard, was near Royse when all this happened but was telegraphed for and has arrived. The sheriff from Kaufman has also arrived. The inquest was held this afternoon by Justice I.S. Wood.

William Rogers testified that he and Mr. Cox started to Forney on a wagon, and as they passed Tom Turk's place, Turk called to them to stop and he went up to Cox and said that Mr. Haggood told him that he (Cox) said that he (Turk) was a liar. Mr. Cox told him that he (Cox) said that if anybody said that he (Cox) said that Mr. Hoggood was not any account was a liar. Mr. Turk pointed to his son Evert and said he was the one that said it. Soon I hear a pistol shot and looked and saw Cox shooting. I hallowed to him that it would not do and he stopped shooting and ran a few yards with me and then went into the brush.

The evidence of the other witnesses was about the same.

I'm interested in more about how John Thomas Turk died, and as my records show he died on 6 Aug. 1890, if he was shot in 1889 and died several months later.

I show that his son Robert Lewis Turk was the 7th of 10 children. John Thomas Turk was my paternal grand-uncle.

Ralph Howard Turk (my grandfather) was a brother of John Thomas Turk.

Do you know anything more about the ranch in Forney or what type of lawman John Thomas Turk was?

Also, I have Pauline Abercrombie Ferrell's birthdate as 19 Nov. 1854.

My genealogy is at www.jeanniemay.com/genealogy.html

Jean May Turk Fairclough
Hope you are still researching now, in 2008. See my genealogy at http://www.jeanniemay.com/genealogy.html-- John Thomas Turk was my grand-uncle. I show Frank as being Charles Frank Turk and that he married Addie Martha Ballard, but maybe Addie Gumm had been married before and I have her previous married name. I show Robert Lewis Turk married Alva Mae Gumm. I have ancestry for the Robert and Frank back to late 1600's. Email me at jeanniemay@jeanniemay.com if and when you read this reply.
William's father was James Turk (1719-1803) and his father was Robert Turk (b. in Ireland about 1690 and died in VA in 1772).

Mary Hall Turk married Joseph Hamilton, and I show their children's names and birth years the same as you have.

I have them in my genealogy which you can view at http://www.jeanniemay.com/genealogy.html

Mary Hall Turk (1787-1852) and Lucinda Turk (1809-1867) were 2nd cousins 1 time removed.

Their common ancestors are Robert Turk (1690-1772) and Margaret (b. about 1694 and died sometime between 1760 and 1772). Lucinda's parents were Theodocius Turk II (about 1780 - 1824) and Mary Ann Johnston. Theodocius Turk II's parents were Theodocius Turk I and Vilinda (Linda) Finley. Theodocius Turk I's parents were John Turk and Agnes Smith, and their parents were Robert Turk and Margaret.

So Lucinda's great-great-grandfather Robert Turk was Mary Hall Turk's great-great grandfather.

I show that Lucinda Turk married Daniel Norman Scurlock (b. 4 Jun 1794, probably in Baldwin County, GA, death date unknown). I show that they had 7 children, their birthdates and death dates are online, with of course their names (see URL above). But I show no marriages or descendencies for the Scurlock children. And I have no ancestry for Daniel Norman Scurlock. Although Daniel Norman Scurlock died in Texas, all his childrfen were born in Macon County, AL, between 1826 and 1837. Daniel Scurlock and Lucinda Turk were married in 1825

If you have any ancestry for Daniel Scurlock, can you let me know that? Or for Joseph Hamilton? I have no ancestry for Joseph Hamilton yet, and no descendency beyond his children.

Was Joseph Hamilton (b. about 1783) a cousin of your ancestor Stephen Currie Hamilton (b. 1811)?
