Side-note on Marion County. My mom's family left Lawrence County & moved to Columbia in Marion County when she was around 11 or 12. Columbia is where she first met my dad, Laymon Parker. His family had also moved to Columbia when he was a small child. They were farmers in Wayne county (S.E Mississippi) on land between the old Indian/Black settlement of Buckatunna, and the town of State Line, about 40 miles N.E of Mobile Ala. His mothers family name was McCann. They were Choctaw/Black which was a common mixture in the area. His dad was of West Indian origin (we dont know which island). Almost everyone in that part of the county was related. Depression era farm prices couldn't feed everyone that depended on the small farms & my grandfather moved the family to Columbia. He was also a skilled carpenter & helped build many structures in that part of the state. My mom & dad knew each others families as kids but were seperated when the Turnbough's left Columbia after a couple of years to move to Gulfport & then mom went to Mississippi State in Jackson. Dad left Mississippi to join the army & fight in Korea. While dad was in the army the Turnbough's left Gulfport for Los Angeles & my dad's older brother had done the same. After dad's discharge he came to Los Angeles to visit, ended up staying, re-met Ruby Turnbough, and were married in 1953.

WOW!!! Awesome information. The internet is truly a wonderful thing. Yes, I would love it if your mother is able to get additional information from older relatives. Thank you.

John's sister (my great grandmother Rosa) was the 4th child of parents Frank and Mary Turnbough. John was the oldest. I believe there were more kids born to the family but I'm having a hard time tracking them. Find out if anyone has information on sisters Dora and Cordelia (Cornelia???)

Rosa married Jesse Burrell in 1893 in Marion County Mississippi and they had 9 kids ... My grandmother Lula, was born in Columbia Miss . During the 1930's they lived in Natchez Miss. and my grandmother was already listed in the census as the head of the household so I don't know the circumstances of my great grandfather's death.

At some point my great grandmother left Natchez and settled in either Illinois or Indiana...and then later to Michigan (where I was born). She followed a religious group from state to state...along with 4 of her daughters which may have contributed to the breakup of 3 of the daughters marriages... The religion was more of a cult. When you get a chance, look up the City of David or House of David....in Michigan. Anyway...I knew my great grandmother. I remembered her as being very short, light skinned, with iron grey hair parted in the middle with long braids below her shoulders (Indian style). I remember her being feisty and mean, a no nonsense person. We all called her Big Mama.

In the early 1960's she moved with 2 of her daughters to Otisco then Charlestown Indiana where she died in January 1967. The last of her 9 children died in 1992 --- in Los Angeles.

Since the mid-70's I've lived in the San Francisco area. I believe there were some Turnboughs living n this area... Any connection?? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Valerie,
Mom was 8 or 10 when her grandfather (John Turnbough) was hit & killed by a train. He was deaf. She mostly remembers him as being, or had the apperance of being, an old white man. At the time of his birth, the state of Mississippi (unlike neighboring Louisiana) only listed people as Black, White,or Mulatto. To further confuse the issue, Mississippi (& other southern states) also listed some white people married to black people as mulatto once they passed laws before and after Reconstruction making interracial marriage illegal. If John indeed had black ancestory he was prpbally a quadroon or octroon. Mom remembers his wife Narcisse (mom's grandmother) as being tall and also very fair. Although no one ever told them directly, mom said the all assumed grandmother to be Black. She had been a school teacher & came to live with them for a while on the family farm near Oakvale after the train accident. My Mom's father (James Turnbough)had the apperance of his parents. His siblings (my grand uncles) ranged from white looking to tan, dark eyes & hair, on the short side. My mom & her siblings have the the same range in looks.
Mom said that growing up they knew of the white Turnbough's but they never had any dealings with them. She believes that her father may have had contact with them, and that they knew of the black Turnbough's. From what I have been able to tell most of the white Turnbough's lived in neighboring Lincoln county around Brookhaven & Bouge Chitto. Around the turn of the century there was a business owner Z.Z Turnbough in Lincoln Co. & Paul Turnbough was the Cheif of Police in Brookhaven. I believe there is also a Turnbough St. in Brookhaven. The only sort of recient contact between the two sides was in the early 1970's when some land issues came up. Grandfather Turnbough (everyone called him Chief) had passed & my grandmother had some brief telephone conversations with them. Grandmother said that if it was unclear to either party who they were talking to, one of them would ask if they were one of the white Turnboughs or the Black Turnboughs. On my next trip to New Orleans I just might make the short drive up to Lincoln & Lawrence counties & look around for myself.

Not sure I understand your question ... Tell me about the black and white side of the Turnbough family... Assume it refers to slave/slavemater connection. Right?
All I know is that my greatgrandmother's husband was black but I really don't know about her. I always thought of her part black, part native american. Tell me more.

Hi Valerie,

I spoke to my mom briefly over the weekend about our new Turnbough connection. We are going to get together this week. She dosen'r remember a lot about her grandfather on the Turnbough side, but she still has some older relatives around that might help. She was curious as to whether you are on the white or Black side of the Turnbough family? Both sides lived in Lawrence County when she was a child.
My grandfather brought the Turnbough side of my family to California from Gulfport Mississippi around 1950. He owned an ice delivery business and a auto repair business in Gulport. He continued the auto repair business in Los Angeles along w/ his brothers. We all still live in Southern California (L.A., Orange, Riverside, & S.B. counties).

I really don't have much on the Turnbow family. I was trying to find out more about Ailsy, and this is what I have found. Not sure if any of it makes sense. Hope it helps you. I do think Alsey married David Langston, then Henry B. Jones. The marriage to Jones was in Texas. I think John and Malissa were her parents, but have no proof, and was hoping someone else could help make the connections.

I found an Alsey Turnbow in the 1850 census, daughter of John and Melissa Turnbow. 1850 United States Federal Census > Mississippi > Smith
This is the only Alsey that was found during that time.
1850 United States Federal Census > Mississippi > Smith > Not Stated Not Dated
Thurnbow, John M	33	AL	Farmer
Melissa F	23	MS
William M 07	MS
Lenora F 05	MS
Anny F	03	MS
Alsey F	01	MS

The following is just for research questions, don't know if they are related or not.
In 1850 Census, Smith County, there were 5 Turnbow's listed who were from Alabama.
Isaac	Abt 1827 had wife Nancy, 23 and son James 4, John 1.
Gary -- I just came across your message on the board. I don't read them regularly, but I found yours to be most interesting. I believe that your wife's mother Charlene may be my cousin. We only met once to my knowledge. If one and the same, she would have had a stepbrother named Clifford. Charles Edward, with the same dates, was my father's youngest brother. I have a great deal of the family history as well as address information for Charlene's other cousins. If it's the same family -- they lived in the San Bruno / San Mateo area in California. Many of the family remaining still resides in that area. Charles was one of 6 sons born to Joseph Elmer & Eva Lee (Daly) Turnbough. There were no daughters to this union.

I would be happy to exchange information with you and your wife if this sounds like it's the same family line you are seeking. I'll be anxious to hear from you. Linda

I hope you are still able to receive this. I am related to Samuel and Jane through their son Samuel Luther Turnbough, his son George Turnbough and George's daughter Emily Turnbough. I was in Oklahoma this past summer and had hoped to make it to Dillard, MO. to visit the cemetary where Samuel and Jane are buried. I didn't make it but plan to go there on my next visit to that area.. Thanks so much for answering my query. Looking forward to hearing from you....Donna

George and Catherine Turnbough are my great-great-great grandparents. George was born in Mo. in 1835, Catherine in Alabama in 1837. I do not know Catherine's maiden name but I have a picture of them taken in Indian Territory. It is not very good but if you look close you can see that she has beads braided into her hair and a beaded purse hanging from her shoulder. I have always wondered if she might have been Native American. Do I have these ancestors in common with anyone else? Thanks for any help. Donna

Seeking information on Mary Turnbough of Crawford Co., MO born 1879 who married Thomas Alexander Gregory.
I believe Mary was the daughter of Abner Turnbough but I do know she was the sister of Dallas Turnbough.
Supposedly, she is buried at Czar Cemetery and that she and Alex had 3 children who are buried there also but I have been unable to find a record of what happened to her or the children.
Alex married 2nd wife Anna Chandler in 1916 Crawford Co., MO

Re: Turnbough/Turnbow, Isaac Mississippi

I believe that the Isaac you mention is the brother of Robert Turnbough who was in Choctaw Co MS in 1850. I posted a message about his family and then found your message. Isaac and Nancy moved to Lawrence Co MS and then to Lincoln Co MS. I also think that Joseph who married Rebecca is their brother who died in Covington Co MS. His descendants moved to TX. The John married to Malissa is the son of Robert, I think. I found Delila Turnbow, age 9, living with T. (Tobias) R. and Malissa Cox in Jasper Co in 1860 and 1870. Could this be John's widow? Do you know where the other children of John and Malissa were in 1860? Would love to know more. Martha

I am sorry but I made a mistake when I posted the previous message. Isaac is the son of Robert Turnbow (Turnbough) and Sarah Canterbury. Isaac Harvey Turnbough married Nancy Hill.
