Surnames: Turnipseed Holland Scott
I'm searching for any information on Turnipseeds migrating to IL (possibly from NE) which may have changed their name to Holland. ggrandparents' name is Hattie Lucretia Holland, b. abt. 1882 married William Henderson Scott abt. 1903. Family lore has it that Hattie's parents had changed their name from Turnipseed to Holland. Any information appreciated.

Hello, my name is Fern Coffin, I live in Olathe KS. Hattie's father was Alva Hartford Turnipseed. His wife was Amanda Grice. They lived in Everett IL, close to Urbana. They were farmers. It was Amanda's from her first husband.

The Turnipseed people came from Switzerland. When they came here they eventually changed it to Rubsamen. There is a Turnipseed cemetary in Alabama. Forget the town. A plaque there explains it.

Sorry, but you have it backwards: the family was Rebsamen in Switzerland, but it was translated to Turnipseed when they came to America.

You can see the marker at this site: http://www.katscelticroots.com/turnipseed.htm

This information was previously posted by the owner of that site.
