NC Tutors // Tutor Family Graveyard & Tutor Family Reunion

Several years ago I was told by my great uncle about a graveyard in North Carolina that was a predominantly Tutor family graveyard. Has anyone heard of this and if so could you please tell me where it is? I'd like to visit it.

I was also once told of a Tutor family Reunion that was held yearly in North Carolina. Does anyone have any information on that?

Thanks,
Stephanie Tutor

My grandfather is (Lonnie Haire b. 9-5-1913 d.2-6-1993) all I know of his parents that both are buried at Rocky Mount Cemetery.
Jean Tutor Roberts, Detroit, Michigan Born approx. 1930

Would love to reconnect or talk with descendants of my uncle's wife. He drowned at age 22. (see story below)

Arthur Lamar Roberts (my mother's youngest brother) came to live with us in 1944 when he was sixteen. I thought he was wonderful. He stayed a couple of years and then went back to Tennessee. He worked with my Uncle Burke in his shoe shop in Humbolt, TN about 1946. And then came back to Michigan again. He stayed with my folks and me until he was called to the Army. Shortly after boot camp, he married Jean Tutor.

Before they got married and left for Alabama, he and Jean and his buddy and his buddy's girlfriend took me out with them one night. We went downtown to the Fox Theatre. At that time, downtown Detroit was an exciting place to be. Several elaborate theatres were in operation. Their lobbies were lavish and huge and it was a big deal to go downtown to the movies. I have no idea what picture we saw. But I remember eating popcorn and drinking pop. I had a wonderful time and was thrilled to death to be with them that night. I think I had a crush on his buddy. I must have been 9 or 10 years old!

He and Jean married around 1950 and lived in Anniston, Alabama, where he was stationed. In 1952 he and a buddy went fishing (in Art's boat) on the Coosa River. It was a treacherous river with lots of eddies and whirlpools. Neither one of them could swim. The boat capsized and they drowned. It was 45 days before they found his body. It broke my mother's heart. Mine, too. He was like a big brother to me. For years, I imagined that he really wasn't dead. That he had just gone AWOL from the Army (which he hated). I remember going to the Straits of Mackinac with my parents one year and watching the big barges and boats pass by. I just knew I would see him on one of those boats and he would recognize us and wave. I loved him very much.
---Dawn Hopps Coyle Bohannon, 1999.
Before my great aunt passed away (she married a Tutor) she told me about a Tutor family cemetery in North Carolina. I was wondering if anyone knew of this cemetery and could give me an idea to it's location. I am also wondering if there are any significant spots in Virginia, specifically south east Virginia, that are important in Tutor family history.

Thank you,
Stephanie Tutor (thpets@yahoo.com)
Great granddaughter of Word Tutor of Mississippi - If you can connect your branch of the Tutor tree to my branch of the Tutor tree, please drop me a line.

I'm the great granddaughter of A.W. and Fanny Cooper Tutor. Fanny was a prolific photographer. I'm fortunate enough to have some of those photos. Unfortunately, my mother doesn't know all of the folks in the photos. I'm trying to figure out how to post scans of the photos in the public photo library here at Ancestry. I know one of the Tutors in the many of these pictures is Moody Tutor. I'll post a notice when I figure out how to get the pictures up. Please let me know if you know the identity of any of these folks.
Tutor family

Several years ago I decided that I wanted to try and trace my connection to the Tutor family. After becoming very frustrated with the whole process I gave up. Well this year after returning from the Memphis/Mississippi area and visiting my great uncle who showed me some old Tutor family photos, my interests have been peaked once again.

So if possible, I would like to try and get a list of all the Tutors out there who are trying to research the family. Chances are that most of us are family but just don't know it.

So if you are researching or looking for information on the Tutor family please contact me. I would like to create some kind of database. Maybe even do a Tutor family monthly newsletter or possibly a web page for all of us to gather.

If you are interested, please contact me at StephT3249@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Stephanie Tutor
Correction:

John Louis Bratton and North Anna Weathers (maiden name was "Weathers") were both born in MS, probably Pontotoc area. I had listed this incorrectly in my previous post. North Anna's mother (Temperance Tutor) and father (John S. Weathers) were the ones born in NC.

Dot
allthisjoy@ftc-i.net

Hi Debbie,

Henwell L. Tutor is also in my branch.

If this is the right person, his dad was John Henry Tutor (b. Cumberland, NC), and mom was Martha Patsy Betts (b. in Virginia). One of their daughter's was, Temperance Tutor. Temperance was my great-grandmother's mother. My great-grandmother was North Anna Weathers (m. name, Bratton) of Pontotoc, MS. She was born in MS, but died in TN. in 1935.

Hope I have this info correct. I am new at this and it is very hard to keep up with all of these names, dates and places!

I notice this is an old post so, will hopefully hear from you. I'll try and e-mail you at the e-mail addy you have listed. I know that a lot of times, the older e-mail addresses are no longer good, though.

Feel free to contact me if you see this post.

Dot
allthisjoy@ftc-i.net

Hi,

Just to get on the board for the name of "Tutor".

My paternal grandmother (Corhenn B Ellis) was a daughter of John Lewis (sp. possibly should be "Louis") Bratton and North Anna Weathers. Both John and North Anna were born in NC, but moved to Pontotoc, MS area. North Anna (my great-grandmother) was a daughter of John S. Weathers and Temperance Tutor. Temperance Tutor was a daughter of John Henry Tutor and Martha Patsy Betts. Temperance was born on Aug 6 1824 in Cumberland Co., NC and died on May 17 1899 in Pontotoc Co, MS.

Please feel free to contact me.

Dot
allthisjoy@ftc-i.net

Henwell L Tutor is in my line.

My branch:

1. My Great-great grandmother - Temperance Tutor (married John S. Weathers), my great-great grandfather. Temperance was a daughter of John Henry Tutor and Martha Patsy Betts. Temperance was the mother of my great-grandmother, North Anna Weathers Bratton, who was married to John Louis Bratton, my great-grandfather. My grandmother was Corhenn B Ellis (whose grandmother was Temperance Tutor), and she married Robert Newton Ellis.

2. John Henry Tutor and Martha Patsy Betts were Temperance's mother and father, making them my ggggrandparents.

3. Henwell L Tutor was a child of John Henry Tutor and Martha Patsy Betts. He was born on 16 Jun 1844 in Cumberland Co., NC and died on 1 March 1931 Bell Co., Texas at age 86. He married Julia Ann Johnson on 3 July 1866 in Rondolph, Pontotoc Co. Mississippi.

This is all the info that I have. All of this can be so confusing until that I hope I have all of it correct!

Feel free to e-mail me.

Dot
allthisjoy@ftc-i.net
