Tutt DNA testing

I invite any Tutt males who are considering DNA testing for genealogy purposes to go ahead and do it. Here is why. I recently took the Ancestry.com Y-46 DNA test along with another Tutt male. Forty years of thorough, well documented paper research show that we are fourth cousins and that our most recent common ancestor (six generations back) is a James Tutt of Virginia and South Carolina. However, we were stunned when the AncestryDNA results showed that we are not related at all. We are in the same haplogroup (R1b), but match on only 28 of the 46 markers. The AncestryDNA project has assured me that the testing results are accurate and that there was no mixup. Accepting that assurance, we have some serious, and potentially costly, research ahead of us to resolve the matter. It would be helpful to have comparative DNA test results from other Tutt males who know or believe they descend from this Tutt line:

Richard Tutt (parents unknown)(m. Mary Underwood ca. 1703) sons, Richard, William James, Joseph, Benjamin

James Tutt (m. Anne Hansford ca. 1737) sons, Benjamin, James, Richard, Lewis, Gabriel, Hansford

Benjamin Tutt (m. Barbara Stalnaker ca. 1760), sons James, Gabriel, Richard, Benjamin

James Tutt (m2. Mrs. Lucy Wolecon/Wallicon, widow of Daniel, Jr. ca. 1788) sons, Richard, Gabriel H., James B., Clement C.

I descend from James Tutt’s son, Clement C. Tutt, and the other Tutt male who tested descends from James’ son, Richard. I will be glad to discuss this matter and exchange Tutt genealogy info with anyone who is interested.
Richard Tutt, Bourbon Co., KY, 1797 - 1813

Does anyone know the origins of the Richard Tutt who is on the 1810 Bourbon Co., KY, census? He was age 45+ at that census, suggesting birth in 1765 or earlier. He lived in Bourbon Co. at least from 1797 through 1813, as he is on the County tax rolls for those years. It is easy to assume that he came from the Virginia Tutt family whose progenitor was Richard Tutt (m. Mary Underwood). A number of those folks move to KY, or passed through KY on their way west. However, with all the info I have on the various branches of the VA Tutts, I cannot make a connection to the Richard Tutt in Bourbon Co.

This Richard Tutt of Bourbon Co. left a will that was written July 2, 1813 in Bourbon Co., KY, but was proven in Bracken Co., KY, on June 1, 1818. In the will, he left property for the benefit of Abel and Mary Stewart and their four children. Mary’s maiden name was Tutt, but the will does not state her relationship to Richard. Was she a daughter, sister, cousin??? The will also leaves something to the family of a Thomas Tutt, without identifying the relationship. Finally, the will also left a legacy for a William Ballenger, who must have been a very good friend.

I will appreciate any new or specific info concerning this Richard Tutt.
Re: Will of James Tutt m. Ann Minor

Hi Gary,

I wrote to you a while back in my search to find my ancestor, James Tutt, father of my great-great grandfather, Edwin E. Tutt. At the time I thought this James might be related to John Tutt. He is, but not the way I thought at that time.

I was interested in your post about the will of James Tutt who married Anne Minor, as I recently found some misplaced documents from Culpeper County that I think finally proves who my ancestor was, and it relates to one of your questions about the will of James Tutt.

The first is a property deed dated 25 November 1808, between James Tutt of Spotsylvania County and James Tutt, son of the said James Tutt of Spotsylvania County. The deed confers a parcel of land in Culpeper County from the father James to the son James. Pertinent to this deed was the following:

...unto the said James Tutt his heirs and assigns one half of the tract of land in Culpeper County now in possession of said James Tutt containing four hundred and fifty one acres by a state survey and bounded as followeth beginning at the road leading from Stone House Mountain to Thorntons Gap and running with the patents line N171/4 E212 pole to the Red Oaks and two Box Oaks corner to the dividing line between the brothers Charles M. Tutt and James Tutt thence ...

(This property also bordered the land of Capt. John Tutt}. This deed was witnessed by Charles M. Tutt and Benjamin Colvin.

Then later, in a property deed dated 21 March 1821, James Tutt and his wife Lucy were securing a loan from William Smith to pay off a debt to a Richard Norris. All of these individuals were residents of Culpeper County at the time. James and Lucy were using their property, household goods and farm animals to secure the note. None of this is terribly important except for these two things. The first is the clerk of courts at that time had a tendency to write his capital Js to look as if they were capital Is, which made the document kind of hard to read, and I noticed how similar to capital Is his Js were throughout the document. When I read your post about the will of James Tutt and you asked who Richard I Tutt was, I wondered if he could have actually been Richard J Tutt, as in Richard Johnson Tutt. I don't know if you actually saw the deed or if it was just a transcript someone had made and the transcriber assumed the J was an I.

The second point is a paragraph of the property deed signed by James and Lucinda in 1821, in the case of this deed, Lucinda was Lucy. Here is the pertinent paragraph:

...a certain parcel of land lying in the County aforesaid (Culpeper) and is the same tract whereon the said James Tutt at present resides and is part of the same tract which he inherited by the will of his father James Tutt deceased is bounded by Charles M. Tutts land on the North John Tutts on the East...

Thus I believe my James Tutt is actually the son of James Tutt and Anne Minor. Further evidence of this was the genealogy report that I mentioned when I wrote to you previously about the Martin Myers family that stated that Edwin E. Tutt, son of James Tutt and Lucinda Colvin, married Elizabeth Ann Myers in Taylor County, VA in 1850. In the 1850 census of Taylor County, VA James Tutt, farmer, is listed as 70 years of age. This corresponds to the date of birth of James and Anne Minor Tutt's son James, who was born about 1781 in Spotsylvania Co. Also listed on that census was James' wife, Lucinda, age 53; Jane, age 35; Elizabeth, age 16; Matilda, age 14 and Mariah, age 9. On the 1860 census of Taylor County, only Lucinda, age 64, is listed with Matilda, then age 22. On the 1870 census of Taylor County, Lucinda, age 73, was living in the household of John W. Hamilton and his wife, Caroline. Caroline was age 33 at that time. Lucinda was also living with John and Caroline Hamilton on the 1880 census of Taylor County, WV, and was related to John as his mother-in-law. Caroline Tutt Hamilton died in Taylor County on 24 August 1919 at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 24 days. I am not sure of the identity of Jane, Matilda, Elizabeth and Mariah, but Caroline was the sister of Edwin E. Tutt.

In the Myers genealogy it stated that James Tutt had been married prior to his marriage to Lucinda, and had children by that marriage. I believe this James Tutt had been previously married to Elizabeth Royston on 14 September 1804.

Finally, Benjamin Colvin, who witnessed the above-mentioned deed as well as the will of the senior James Tutt (I have other documents that link James with Benjamin Colvin as well) was the father of Lucinda Colvin, who married James Tutt on 23 January 1816. Lucinda was 22 years younger than James, and their children were obviously considerably younger than James' children with Elizabeth Royston.

Also, James Tutt and Lucinda seemed to sell off most of their property in Culpeper County in 1823 and 1824, probably before they removed to Taylor County. I have had these documents for nearly ten years, but they were in a file that I had misplaced until this week. But I think I have finally found my ancestors.

Just wanted to offer this information as a followup to your query on the will of James Tutt.

linda tutt
green bay wisconsin

Cordelia Tutt, 1870 KY

Looking for any info on Cordelia Tutt born ca. 1807 in Virginia, per 1870 census. In that census she is living in Harrodsburg, Mercer Co., KY.

Cannot clearly find her in other censuses. For example, in 1860, there was a 50 year old Cordelia Tutt, b, ca 1810 in KY, living with the family of a Thomas S. Broughton. Censuses are not always exact, so this could possibly be her.

I am trying to prove or disprove whether Cordelia Tutt was the mother of William H. Tutt whose household, also in 1870 Mercer Co., KY, was as follows:

1870 Census, Pct 7, Mercer Co., KY
Wm. H. Tutt, 38, Carpenter, KY
Mary Tutt, 28, Keeps House, KY
Cordelia, 11, At School, KY
John, 9, KY
Robert, 6, KY
Harriett, 4, KY
Wm. H. Tutt, Jr., 2, KY
Origin of Richard Tutt, m. Mary Underwood

This Richard Tutt is my 7G Grandfather. I hope this post will stimulate some research effort to try and find where he came from and who his parents were. Other than some deeds and other similar records, this is all I know about Richard. Researchers have been looking for proof of his origins for more than 150 years with no success.

KEY NAMES: Richard Tutt, Ann Bowden alias Harris/Ann Butler, George Bowden alias Harris, Ann Lancelott, Ann Butler nee Lancelott – the eight events listed below variously involve these people and they occurred In Westmoreland Co., Virginia, unless otherwise stated.

KEY EVENTS:
March 28, 1688 – The earliest mention I have found of George Bowden alias Harris in Virginia records. It involves the resolution of the determination of a servant’s age.

1697/98 – Death of Ann Lancelott, first wife of Thomas Butler III, according to family researchers.

January 31, 1700 – Will of George Bowden alias Harris proven in court and Ann his relict was appointed Executrix.

June 24, 1700 – The earliest mention I have found of Richard Tutt in Virginia records. On this date, his Aunt, Ann Bowden alias Harris, gifted him an unspecified amount of land.

August 28, 1700 – By virtue of a letter of attorney from Ann Bowden alias Harris, William Underwood acknowledged a deed of gift of lands to Richard Tutt.

March 5, 1701 – In the Richmond County Court, VA, an action was brought by Anne Harris, Exx. of George Bowden, against: Jno. Browne.

May 28, 1701 – Richard Tutt was one of several men “…summoned to bee Grand inquisitors for our Soveraigne Lord the King, sworn and charged…”

May 26, 1703 – Richard Tutt sold the earlier gifted land to a Thomas Butler and the transaction shows that (1) by this date he was married to Mary Underwood and (2) by this date, his Aunt formerly known as Ann Bowden alias Harris was know as Mrs. Ann Butler, indicating that she had remarried.

DISCUSSION: Nobody knows with certainty where Richard Tutt (m. Mary Underwood) came from or who his parents were. One researcher who contacted me by email 3 or 4 years ago, claimed to have information that Richard’s father was named Benjamin, but the man never sent me any promised copies of his materials and I lost his email address in my transition between internet providers.

Some researchers say the family was French Huguenot and that the family name originally was Tout or LaTout, which they changed to Tutt. Other researchers say Richard Tutt was English. No conclusive, verifiable proof has been presented for either theory. However, The Huguenot Society of Manakin Virginia, includes Richard Tutt’s family lineage among those it has registered as Huguenot. I requested copies of the submitted applications and the proof of a Huguenot connection, but materials I received from them suggest that the Huguenot connection is based on family tradition. Following are examples of the divergent positions on the Tutt origins.

(1) One book authored by the old Genealogist, Augusta Fothergill (1876-1965) was titled, “The Tutt Family of Virginia”. In that work, she wrote: (this the support used by applicants to the Huguenot Society of Manakin)

“Tradition among the members of this family who still survive is that the family now known as Tutt was formerly known as LaTout, but the name has invariably appeared in Virginia as Tutt so the change was evidently made at some time before they left England where many of the French changed their names to the English equivalent.” This statement appears to be based on oral testimony and Ms. Fothergill did not cite any hard documentation to support the Huguenot connection.

(2) According to another Tutt researcher, Louis Carstarphen: (second hand quote from his letter to another researcher)

“The first Tutts in this country and the man from whom all of that name are descended so far as I know was Richard Tutt who m. Mary Underwood and died in King George Co., VA where his will was probated in 1728. The book in which his will was recorded was “liberated” by a Yankee soldier and so is lost. While Richard Tutt probably came from England (there were other Tutts there) there is a tradition in the family that the Tutts were French Huguenots and that their name was originally LaTout.” (Note: All Tutts did not descend from this Richard Tutt and wife Mary. There are other Tutt lines. Mr. Carstarphen may have gotten his information from Ms. Fothergill’s work.)

(3) The following is reportedly from a letter written by Mrs. Julian Mims in the early 1920s wherein she discussed the Tutt family. “We are of Huguenot descent and the name was originally La Tout, our ancestor having come to America in the 17th century. One branch of the family came from France via Holland and another via England. The Eng. branch brought with them a Bible that contained family records of value. Great Uncle Andrew got the Bible and his descendants still have it.” ( Note: I haven’t yet determined the identity of “Uncle Andrew”.)

(4) Another publication, “The Tutt Family of Virginia, Philadelphia, and Colorado Springs”, preface by Richard Thayer Tutt III, states:

“Extensive research has been made on the first Richard Tutt. It is certain and independently confirmed that he is related to the Wiltshire and Hampshire Tutts in England. However, no date of his arrival in Virginia has been discovered. It is apparently obvious that he wanted to take part in the development of this new land. It is well known that early settlers who came to Virginia came for economic reasons and not religious….This Tutt family through tradition has a pure English heritage.” As with Ms. Fothergill, there is no hard documentation to support the English heritage.

(5) Charles Wickliffe Throckmorton, in his “Genealogical and Historical Account of the Throckmorton Family in England”, makes an “excursus” to detail the family of our Richard Tutt. On p. 373 of his work, Throckmorton says:

“I have been unable to connect Richard Tutt with the Tutt family in England; it is, however, more than probable that he belonged to the family the Tutt of Idminister, Wiltshire. Alexander Tutt of Idminister, son of Sir Alexander of that place, married Anne, daughter of Richard Swayne of Blandford County, Dorset, and had issue (Visitation of Wiltshire 1623, published by G. W. Marshall, p. 95):

“1. John, son and Heir, aet. 13, 1623. [aet = about the age of]
2. Richard, 2nd son, aet. 11.
3. Alexander, 3rd son.
4. Jane, aet. 12.
5. Anne, aet. 10.
6. Mary, aet. 7.
7. Elizabeth aet. 4.
8. Millicent, aet. 2.

“Richard being the second son, may have emigrated to Virginia and was possibly the father of Richard, Tutt who died in King George County in 1728. The arms of the Tutt family of Wiltshire were quarterly argent and gules, in the first quarter a crescent of the second.” (Note: Marshall’s “Visitation”, p. 95, shows that Alexander Tutt of Idminister (m. Anne Swayne) also had a brother named Richard.)

Notwithstanding all the above, our Richard Tutt's Aunt, Ann Bowden alias Harris/Ann Butler, may be the key to determining his origin, but we need to determine the basis for the “Aunt” relationship. Was she the sister of one of Richard Tutt’s parents? Was she his Aunt by marriage? Did the title of “Aunt” have other meanings in those times?

Aunt Ann’s apparent first husband was a man variously named in Virginia county records as George Bowden alias Harris, George Bowdon alias Harris and George Harris alias Bowden, and other variations. The specific reason for his name styling is unknown. However, an internet search disclosed the following explanations for the use of two surnames, joined by the word "alias" in early American records. It usually indicated an illegitimate birth and that the person joined the surname of his reputed father to that of his mother. However, there were other reasons for the adoption of two surnames. Sometimes when children inherited through their mother, they used both the father's and the mother's names. Sometimes the name of the natural father, who had died, was joined to that of a stepfather. In case of adoption, the original name and the name of the adoptive parent were sometimes used together.

“Westmoreland County, Virginia, Order Book 1698-1705, Part Two, 1700-1701”, abstracted and compiled by John Frederick Dorman, shows the info above about George Bowden alias Harris’ will being proven and his widow, Ann, being appointed Executrix. I wrote to Westmoreland County citing that info and requesting a copy of the will, with the hope that it might shed some light on things. In response, the County sent me a copy of the page out of the Order Book showing the above info which I already had. The copy was accompanied by a form letter that gave no further explanation. In my follow-up request, I again asked for a copy of the will or a clear statement that the will is not in the county records. The reply to my follow-up was as follows: “Mr. Tutt, I am sorry for the confusion. There is no will indexed in Westmoreland County for George Bowden/Bowdon/Border alias Harris. Neither is it listed in Torrence’s Virginia Wills & Inventories. I cannot explain this….” So, there still is some uncertainty in my mind as to whether or not the will is there.

At some unknown time between 5 Mar 1701 and 26 May 1703, the widow, Ann Bowden alias Harris, apparently married a man named Butler. There was a Thomas Butler III in Westmoreland Co., VA, who was married first to Ann Lancelott. Some Butler/Lancelott researchers report that Ann Lancelott died ca. 1697-98 and they believe that Thomas Butler III married second, Ann Bowden alias Harris. The will of Thomas Butler III was dated 22 May 1714 and proven on 25 August 1714. The will suggests that Thomas Butler did not have a living wife at the time of the will. Finally, The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, by Frederick A. Virkus, states at p. 539, that “…Thomas [Butler III] (d. 1714), m. 2-Anne Borden (aunt of Richard Tutt, of Richmond Co., Va….”

Some researchers believe that Ann Bowden alias Harris married a Tobias Butler, but Westmoreland County records show that Ann, the relict of Tobias Butler, married a Charles Smith before 1 Dec 1698. Charles Smith's will was dated 16 February 1709 and proven 9 June 1714. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Ann Bowden alias Harris was ever married to Tobias Butler.

SOME EARLY TUTTS IN COLONIAL AMERICA

The Wiltshire Emigration Database shows the following:
-Richard Tutt from Wilton in Wiltshire Emigrated or was Transported to Virginia America in 1688. His age was 18, single, and occupation, Ag. Lab.
-Richard Tutt from Semley in Wiltshire, born 1649 occupation Shepherd, Emigrated to ?Virginia America 1688
-Richard Tutt from Rowde in Wiltshire, born 1657, occupation Ag. Labourer, emigrated on the 14th April 1679.
(Note: These men likely are not our Richard, but a primary rule of genealogy is to check out all leads.)

James Tute, transported 1652 by Mrs. Jane Harmer
Source: p. 275, “Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Land Patents and Grants, 1623-1666”, abstracted and indexed by Nell Marion Nugent

Jno. They need to be checked out.)
Presently, I know of no connection to your Tutt family. My direct Tutt line has been in the U.S. since at least the year 1700. The oldest ancestor in the line is a Richard Tutt in VA. Nobody has been able to identify his parents or where he came from, but it is very possible that he came from England. I am glad the info was useful.

Dear Ms.Mrs. Guthrie, I am writing in regards to a very old post. My mother has passed away and I am now doing our research.I have discovered(maybe) that a woman named Mary Elizabeth Tutt Guthrie just might be the sister or maybe the first cousin of Liddie (Lydia) Jane Tutt Irvin. Mary Elizabeth was married to Samuel Guthrie in 1870 in Kaufman Co.TX and as it happened was living right next door to Lydia and her husband (my GGGrandparents) in the 1870 census for Kaufman County TX. Would love to collaborrate with you .please contact me. My e-mail is Ladydealer@ttlv.net hope to hear from you soon. Shelly Irvin

By 1870 they were in Kaufman Co., Texas. They are listed in the 1870 census and Jane Tutt, Lydia's mother is living with them. Jane is listed as a widow and born in Tennessee. William did have a brother who came west with them, but I do not know his name. The brother returned to Ala. This is all I know at this time.

Re: the tutts

I throw this info out for what it is worth, not knowing any more about these folks than what you put in your message. However, it seems very possible these are the Tutts you are looking for.

The England Census for 1861 shows the following family in Sussex, Hastings All Sanits:

Head - George Tutt, Junior, age 32, b. Sussex, Brighton, Shipwright
Wife - Harriett, age 29, b. Sussex, Herstmonceux, Shipwright's wife
Son - Charles R., age 4, b. Sussex, Hastings, Scholar
Son - William R, age 2, b. Sussex, Hastings

In 1851, Sussex, Wartling, there was a Harriett Reed, Servant, age 19, b. Sussex, Herstmonceux. She worked in the household of a James & Hanah Noakes. He was a Draper and Grocer. Could she have been George Jr.'s wife? Her last name starts with an "R" and Charles and William had the middle initial "R". Might need to do more work on this theory.

1851 Census for Sussex, Hastings All Saints:
Head - George Tutt, age 50, b. Sussex, Hastings, Master Boat Builder
Wife - Susannah Jane(?), age 51, b. Surrey, Richmond
Son - Charles, age 22, b. Sussex, Brighton, Boat Bullder
Dau - Susannah, age 17, b. Sussex, Hastings
Son - Frederick Thos.(?), age 14, b. Sussex, Hastings, Apprentice
Note: The census index on Ancestry.com has the wife and daughter as Savannah rather than Susannah.

Re: Tutt/Clore

Where is Oak Park located, that is, in what Virginia county?

If you do not already know, you can find Silas, Ethel and children on the censuses for Dutchess Co., NY, in 1900 and 1910 and for LItchfield Co., CT, in 1920 and 1930. However, I cannot find Susan Tutt and Louis Clore.

In 1870 Culpeper Co., VA, (city of Jefferson) there were three Susan Tutts in one household, one age 43, one age 17 and one age 8. Could one of these be your Susan? The head of the household was an Abram Tutt and the 43 year old Susan appears to be his wife. That would likely make the younger Susans daughters or grandaughters. Never could find a Louis/Lewis Clore.

Benjamin Tutt of Bibb Co. GA

Looking for any information on this Tutt family:

1840 Census, Bibb Co., GA
Benjamin Tutt
2 Males age 20-30 (See Note)
1 Male age 50-60 (Benjamin?)
1 Female age 30-40

Note: My guess is that one of these 20-30 year old males is the William Tutt buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. No clue regarding the name of the other young male or the female. Next door neighbor was a Robert Carver, age 30-40. See note below for relevance.

Additional information:

Bibb County Georgia Early Wills and Cemetery Records by Jean Saunders Willingham and Berthenia Crocker Smith

Rose Hill Cemetery
p. 57 – Tutt, William, b. ???, age 25, d. 10/8, 1842, Bilious Fever
p. 61 – Tutt William, b. Macon, age 2, d. 8/13/1844

1850 Census, Macon, Bibb Co., GA
L. E. Carver, 36, M, $1,200, Connecticut
Mary Carver 42, F, VA
Benjamin Tutt, 9, M, GA (See Note)
H. Blackburn, 35, M, Tobacconist, VA
William Rives, 30, M, Tobacconist, VA
James Gilbert, 25, M, Tobacconist, VA
John Moore, 27, M, Tobacconist, VA

Note: This 9 year old Benjamin Tutt was Albert Benjamin Tutt who lived in Bibb Co., GA, until he died in February 1922. He likely was born in Bibb Co. He was a member of the Macon Guards during the Civil War. Apparently he never married. Finally, the obit says, “Interment will be in the family burying ground near Rutland.” He may have been the son of one of the 20-30 year old males on the 1840 Census, perhaps William. Don’t know the connection between Mary Carver and Benjamin Tutt unless she was his mother and she remarried. However, Bibb Co. records show a marriage between Levi A. Carver and Mary Kelly 3 Feb 1845.

Any help appreciated.
Tutt from Virginia to St. Joseph Co., Indiana

Some questions have been raised about the Virginian, Robert James Tutt, b. abt. 1806, in Culpeper Co., Virginia.

He was the son of Charles Minor Tutt and Mary Johanna Royston.

This is a well-documented colonial Virginia family.

Robert James had married one Rebecca Hopper, and there were numerous children.

Actually, I have discovered that all of the children of Charles Minor Tutt and Mary Johanna Royston ended up in St. Joseph Co., Indiana, by the 1850s; Robert James and his family was just one of six brothers and sisters who left Virginia and came to the same part of Indiana.

St. Joseph County is South Bend and environs, and the Tutt family were very prominent pioneers in the founding of South Bend.

However, they for the most part remained as solid farming stock, with a few lawyers and schoolteachers scattered in the mix.

I have just posted this family, as much as I have thus far researched, to Ancestry World Trees (also searchable on Rootsweb family trees).

My own connection is a curious one: Robert James Tutt, a carpenter, was a widower (Rebecca Hopper had died by the 1850 census), but by 1870 he shows up with a whole 'nother brood of children by his second wife, Mary J. Smalk (or Small), b. Pennsylvania. This means six kids by the first marriage and four by the second.

I am not a Tutt.

But one of them, Laura Matilda Tutt, from the second marriage, became a schoolteacher in the village of North Liberty, which was my ancestral family home base, and she married a millwright, John F. Irvin, the brother of my g-grandfather.

They had 2 children. Almost all of the early Tutts to South Bend also had families, and so the descendants there are numerous.

If anyone here has Tutt connections from St. Joseph County, Indiana, I would welcome some more discussion on this forum! Or a private e-mail, as warranted.

---Bob Robertson
Napa Valley, California

Steve---

The surname Sheets has many genealogical links in St. Joseph Co., Indiana history. My mother's grandmother was of the Nitcher family, and one Charles B. Nitcher married Clara M. Sheets in 1902. They were childless and lived in North Liberty. My mother called her "aunt Clara".

Clara's father was one Horace Sheets, b. 1851 in Ohio, whose father was from Pennsylvania. The surname Sheets, also spelled Sheetz, is a derivation of the Pennsylvania German "Schitz", and since St. Joseph County was settled in the 1840s-1850s by many of the Amish and Brethren people from PA, I would suspect that most of the Sheets families have those origins.

I have not "pushed back" Horace Sheets into Pennsylvania with any confidence, however. I have the PA origins of the family, but have been unable to connect my line with them.

In all likelihood, your Sheets ancestors came into Kentucky from PA at the same time as other family branches went to Ohio, and later Indiana. The fact that they came from Kentucky to that part of Indiana suggests there may have been some correspondence between the family branches.

You may want to look up "Sheets" in Pennsylvania, to see who moved on into Kentucky. I'll be doing the same very soon.

My family tree is posted on Ancestry World Trees, and is accessible on the "family trees" tab of the Rootsweb home page. Type in Clara M. Sheets, or Horace Sheets.

It's great to hear from you!

---Bob
