Charles R. Tuttle

Charles Richard Tuttle was a prolific history writer in the 1870s, and perhaps onward, particularly for Midwest States. His foreward commentary on at least the books that I've seen have him in Madison, Wisconsin but I've been unable to find a bio for him. Can anyone help?

As I understand, Ayres came to this area from I believe connecticut. It was about 1844 as I understand when he took up his property from the original land grant , The binham estate. His oldest son Sheldon came with him. It was said that he fathered 15 children But I dont know who their mother was or if she died or ever came to westfield. My father did a great bit of research and put it on the old large floppy discs. I put the info on a computer many years ago. it was a 386 dx 40 computer. I have not used it in years.

I will see if I can retrieve the info somehow for you. I have to leave now but will get back to you.

Bill L.

Ayres Tuttle is or was my great great great grandfather. He built an Inn for travelers about 1 .5 miles from where I am sitting right now. My father was born in this Inn. It still is standing today.

'll add myself to those researching Tuttles in Maine.

Using the Tuttle/Tuthill Families in America book by Alva Tuttle, I have a list of Tuttle men from whom I decend and little else. Often, I don't know when and where they were born, lived, or their wives' last names.

My g-grandpa was Horace Drake Tuttle, who lived and died in Paris, Maine but was not born there.

I do know this: There were three brothers, William, Richard and John Tuttle who came over with the Winthrop Fleet in 1635, and another John Tuttle who came also in 1635 on the Angel Gabriel. The second John appears to be of no relation to the others. I decend from Angel Gabriel John, who setttled in Dover New Hampshire. The brothers Tuttle seem to have scattered around southern New England.

Minnie Elizabeth Tuttle is most likely to be the daughter of William and Mary Jane Tuttle. William was born about 1835 in Michigan, the son of Joseph [1798, Pennsylvania] and Mary Tuttle [1806, New York]. Minnie E., age 9, was on the 1880 Clay, Harrison, Iowa census with her parents, three brothers and a sister. On the 1880 census, she was listed as born in Iowa. The family moved about often between Iowa and Nebraska, so her birth place could be either. She [Minnie Horton, March 1871, Nebraska] was on the 1900 Chicago census, a widow with her children Lydia [March 1891, Nebraska], Claude [Jan 1894, Nebraska] and Ella Rose [July 1896, Illinois]. She then married William Thompson [1865, Illinois] and was on the 1910 Harvey, Cook, Illinois census with their child Raymond [1904, Illinois] and her children from her marriage with Lewis B. Horton. She was on the 1920 Chicago census with William and son Raymond.

Re: Tuttle, CT to MI ??

The Kortum Family Tree is online at Ancestry.com. and Frederick A. Tuttle is listed on that tree. Frederick's father was Chester J. Tuttle, b. Oct 2, 1792, New Haven Connecticut. His father was Ezra Tuttle, b. Nov 5, 1769. Ezra was on the 1810 New Haven, CT; on the 1820 Adams, MA census and then appears to reside with his son Benjamin in Strongsville, OH. In the meantime, Chester J. Tuttle was on the 1830 Cleveland, OH census and on the 1840 Unadilla, MI census. Chester was on the 1850 Sylvan, Washtenaw, MI census with his son Frederick, daughter Anna, son Chester Jr. and wife Sabrina. Frederick was on the 1860 and 1870 Unadilla, Livingston, MI census with his parents. Frederick is a descendant of William and Elizabeth Tuttle who arrived from England in Boston aboard the PLANTER in 1635. They eventually moved to New Haven. The Tuttles of New Haven are well documented in the book THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM and ELIZABETH TUTTLE by George Frederick Tuttle, 1883.

Hope someone can help me with this one, I've been searching a long time. I'm looking for any info on this Tuttle:

HORTON, Lewis B. Marriage
Wife: Minnie E. TUTTLE
Marriage Date: 23 Dec 1889 Recorded in: Douglas, Nebraska.

Minnie was said to be born in Nebraska in 1871, but the date is not certain. I would like any info on her or her parents. She married a second time to William Thompson, I have all the info from there on, but she was very closemouthed about where she came from and never mentioned her parents. She told her son, Roy, that she was Native American, but gave no details. She died many years ago. If anyone knows anything about Minnie I would appreciate any leads. Thank you..
Christie

John Tuttle of NC, died 12-1862

I have an old Bodenhamer letter than mentions the death of John Tuttle. This was around the Stokes-Forsyth Counties of N.C. in about December of 1862. I have several John Tuttles in my tree but I have very little info on them since they are not direct kin.

I just came back from the local Family History Center. I ordered two of the four microfilms of Alva's research documentation. All the correspondence. I had planned to stay all day and go back this week. However the tapes were impossible to read. The filming was done in 1984 by the LDS. You would think that they would be better than they are. But they are so dark that the readers can't illuminate enough to be read. Very disappointing to have wasted my time.

Hi Colleen,

You're right that he's part of the same family. I looked up George Tuttle, and thought he was probably the son of William Tuttle and Sally, both born about 1816 (some of the names are in common between the two families and the dates match.) Searching the internet revealed that George was married to Rachel Wayman in 1880, and was the son of William Wright Tuttle and Sally. According to "Tuttle or Julhill Families," William Wright Tuttle was the son of Solomon Tuttle and Adah Carman. His wife's name was Sally Ann Light. William Wright Tuttle was the older brother of my ancestor Phebe Tuttle, wife of Charles Dibble. Hope this helps!

Kate

But I came across a Minnie from Nebraska born in 1865. daughter of Archibald and born abt. 1828 and Almira. she was living in 1880 in Omaha Nebraska in the home of her sister Mary E. who was born about 1851. that is all that was in there. If you think it is her, I can try to look up info. on Archibald. I only have access to the book for a few more days, so post a message back or email me directly. hope this helps!
