Tyre's: Irish or English origin?

Ok, I know this could be a really dumb question I'm posting. I like to know where this name originates from. My family says its Ireland but find some people tell me it's England. What gives here? My 3rd g-grandfather came to the USA in 1852-3. Born in 1821 as Peter Tyre and the name changed to Tyer before 1860.
Can anyone shed some light here? Thank you in advance for your time!
Regards, Bob Tyer in CT
