Thanks for that ... I know of this Udell family, and suspect Joseph is the son of a William Udell of Frome. Have not - yet - been able to place William into my Udell family but it is almost certain he is directly related in some way.

I think this family has an earlier connection with Australia as well.

Would be more than happy to share my research with you. Direct email is spindoc @ netspeed . com . au (without the gaps). I would be keen to learn more about this branch of the family.

Regards

Rohan

I have been researching info on the Udell family from Frome, Somerset. My grandfather Harold Udell was born to Walter Udell and Frances Iving in 1895 in Birmingham England. Walter was born in 1869 to William Udell and Hannah Lloyd in Frome, Somerset. William was born to Joseph and Rachel in 1842, Frome Somerset.
My grandfather emigrated to Western Australia in 1918 as a child with his family.
Does this information relate in anyway?

Susan M. Udell and William H. Smith - Flint, Genesee, Michigan

I am looking for information to "fill in the blanks" about my great-grandaunt Susan M. Udell and her husband, William H. Smith. Below is what I have been able to find to date.

Susan M. Udell was was born on 20 Jul 1878 in Sanilac County, Michigan to John and Emma Udell. Michigan birth records show her name as Suanna Miria Udell. Her father died in 1879. The 1880 Census shows her living with her mother, and her name appears as Susan M. Udell. Michigan marriage records show that she married William H. Smith, son of James Smith and Jennie Stover, on 25 Oct 1897 at Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. Her name on the marriage record is Susie Udell.

William H. Smith was born circa 1865 at Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. The record of his marriage to Susan shows his occupation as a butcher.

I have searched the censuses of 1900 through 1930 without success, and have not been able to locate any death records, mainly because I have no dates to work from.

Does anyone have any information on these people?
http://www.cagenweb.com/archives/Biographies/solano/sol-timm...

DOCTOR O. C. UDEL (UDELL)

(deceased), was born in Ohio, June 8, 1820, where he received his education, and graduated in medicine. When twenty-four years of age he went to Iowa, and commenced the practice of his profession, which he continued for five years. In 1850 he came to California, crossing the plains with horses, which were stolen from him when near Salt Lake; he, therefore, was forced to undertake the balance of the journey on foot, accompanied by his four companions, which was accomplished by their arrival in Yuba county, where he remained till the following year, and then returned to Iowa. In 1852 he once more crossed the plains; on this occasion, bringing with him his wife and two children, as well as a drove of cattle. He now settled near Winters, but on the Solano county side of the Putah creek, and confined himself to the raising of stock and farming, which he followed as long as he lived. In 1860 he located on the farm now occupied by his widow, situated four miles west of Dixon. He died there on December 11, 1872. Doctor Udell married, November 6, 1848, Miss Caroline Winton, who was born in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, January 17, 1827. Their children are: Alva, David, Edwin, Olivia, May, Carrie (deceased), George, Blanche, Ralph, Grace.

History of Solano County…. – San Francisco, Cal. - Wood, Alley & Co., East Oakland, pub 1879
pp 503
Transcribed by Kathy Sedler

My mother asked me to post this to you.
It's probably the wrong Udell but thought it might help narrow it down!

Susan Patricia London, nee Udell, born Frome, Somerset 10.6.1946.
Father: Stanley Horace Udell, grandfather Joseph Udell, both coalmerchants
of Baker St. Frome.
Joseph Udell married Florence Button around 1900 and they had four children
- Norman, Kathleen, Stanley and Gwendolyn. Only the two boys married. I am
the only child of Stanley. Norman had a son and a daughter. The son Brian
has two daughters so our line of the family will eventually die out. Hope
this is of interest.
I don't have anything on Jared. I have a transcription of a letter from John L written to my mom's aunt upon the occasion of the death of the aunt's father Charles Udell. In the letter he discusses growing up with Charles. I have a photos of Charles and one of him at age 16 leaving home to see the "world'. I would be interested in getting (emailed) photos of John L and his family if possible along with names and dates so I can plug them into my Family Tree Maker. I have seen the John Udell II books. I have a photo of his grave that I snapped.

HI! I am a desendant of John's son Jared. I have had a very difficult time finding much information on Jared. I am fortunate that I have been able to visit the big LDS library in Salt Lake and look through their collection. I have a couple photographs of John L. Udell (who was Jared's son) , my great-grandfather. Unfortunately, John L never talked much about his family and my dad wasn't able to pass any family history on from that side. It was through old census data and the Udell genealogy compiled in the 20's (from the LDS family history library) that I was able to tie everything together. After that, I bought a copy of John Udell's Journal kept when he and his wife Emily went across the Beale Wagon Road. Then I was able to find a microfilm copy of the Journal he kept when he went out to California on the northern routes from Ohio. When reading those journals, you get a lot of information about all kinds of "stuff" but never much about his family and children.
If you have any information that would tell more about Jared I would truly appreciate it. Thank you for getting in contact.

Anyone interested may obtain an emailed copy by contacting me.

UDALL tombstone(s) at Saranac Cemetery, Ionia Co., MI

There are a number of Udall burials at the Saranac Cemetery and while walking it yesterday, I uncovered a buried one. It was broken, but could be mostly read. There was no first name, only initials. The first one appeared shaved off, but looked like it could be an I or J. The second initial was clearly A., last name clearly UDALL. Here is how it appeared to me:

(I. or J). A. Udall,
died
Oct 1, 1860
in (the?) 28 year
of his age

1860 census, Boston, Ionia Co., MI has John A. Udell, age 27, occupation: Blacksmith, b. Ohio, wife Maria, age 23, b NY, dau. Sadi E., age 3, b MI, son Wm, age 1, b MI. (and Justin or Justice Hill, age 15, occ: Service, b. NH.)

Does anyone know if this is the son of James Udall and Fidelia Davis (who are buried nearby)??
Carrie Udall / Udell, (b. 1869) dau. of Henry James Udall of Saranac, Ionia, MI.

Carrie (or Caroline?) Udall was born in 1869 to Henry James Udall (spelled Udell in 1870 census), and 2nd wife Ann (probably Mrs.Joanna (Thomas) Aldrich). Last record of Carrie was in the 1880 census in Ionia Co., MI, living with her widowed father.

Henry J. Udall was the son of James Udall and Fidelia Davis, of Portage, OH and Saranac, Ionia, MI. He marries at least 4 times that I know of.
1. Mary Burroughs (spelled Burrons on marriage record) in 10 Mar 1861. She died 10 Feb 1862 and is buried in the family plot at Saranac Cemetery. (They had one dau., Mary E. Udall, b. 1861-62).
2. Mrs. Anna or Joanna (Thomas) Aldrich, abt. 1863, (can't find marriage record), together in Berlin, Ionia, MI, 1870 census, with her daughter, Mary L. Aldrich (by her first marriage) and her daughter, Carrie Udall, age 1, b. 1869, by her second husband Henry J. Udall). Joanna Udall died 7 Aug 1877 and is buried in the Udall plot in Saranac Cemetery. Two young children of Henry J. Udall (mother not named) are also buried there, they are likely children of Joanna: James H. b. 1866, d.1867, and Adelia (or Fidelia) b. 1865 d. 1867.
3. Mrs. Sarah Alphretta (Groom) Wedge, married 3 Jan 1882 in Ionia, MI. They had several children together: Margaret / Maggie, Irene / Rena, and possibly Rose, Charles and Clayton.
4. Annetta / Nettie Creps, married 2 Nov 1901, in Ionia, MI. This marriage ended or petitioned for divorce in 1908, Ionia.

Anyone with information on anyone from this family, but especially Carrie or her father Henry James Udall, is welcome to contact me!
