Take a look at these pages from Calvin Kline's family bible.
These Kline's were from the Berks County, PA area I believe.
I'd love to hear what you have found so far. These documents are 13 to 20MB each so be patient. There are 6 different pages.

http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/70037/Levi%20Kline%20bible...

http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/70037/Levi%20Kline%20bible...

http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/70037/Levi%20Kline%20bible...

http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/70037/Levi%20Kline%20bible...

http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/70037/Mary%20%28nee%20Geha...

http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/70037/Mary%20%28nee%20Geha...

William Umstead and Rhoda Esterbrook

Hello All,

I have been looking for the family of my great-grandfather John George Esterbrook for some time with little or no success. Based on his Missouri death certificate he was born in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois on 8 Aug 1849 to a John Esterbrook and a Rhoda Mann both born in Canada. I have never been able to find John or Rhoda in any U.S. or Canadian census. The first time I find John George, the son, is in the 1870 Fountain County, Indiana census where he was living with the family of his future father-in-law as a farm labor, but with no sign of his parents.

However, recently I have come across some new information in the form of a marriage record, also in Fountain County, Indiana on 4 Sep 1855, between a William Umstead and a Rhoda Esterbrook. Could this Rhoda Esterbrook be the mother of my John George? Perhaps her first husband, John Esterbrook, died sometime between 8 Aug 1849 and 4 Sep 1855 and she married for a second time William Umstead. Although this has not been substantiated, based on the 1850 Fountain County, Indiana census, this William Umstead could be the son of John Umstead and his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).

Does anyone have any information on this couple (William and Rhoda) or know where they might have gone? I have not been able to find them in any subsequent censuses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Frank
Email: frankgriggs@juno.com

PS: For more information on the descendants of John George Esterbrook please go to the following website: http://www.thegriggsfile.com/Esterbrook_WebSite/index.htm
HI everyone, I was going through my files getting ready for the Reep Family reunion in Butler PA., and ran across a family chart someone had sent me back in 2000. I do not remember who it was. In the baptism column it stated that my grandma, Sarah A. Umstead was the ggrandaughter of Ziba Rumbaugh. I have never heard this name mentioned in my family befor and was wondering if someone out there could help me make a connection. Thank you---Juanita

I just started looking at the Umstead family that ties into my wife's side of the family.

The earliest information I have the line is a Jesse b.~1814 who married Barbara Ashenfelder b.~1820.

They had 11 children: Henry, Benjamin, Harriet, Sylvester, Susan, Jacob, William, Jesse, Anna, Roseanna, and Russel.

I've seen some posting on Umstead's from Danville on this board, but I'm not sure how they tie in with this line.

If anyone has more information, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jeff

Response to "Umstead" name

Dear Vickie: My father, William Umstead, was born & raised in Durham, North Carolina but I know the original ship HIS relatives came over on was the "Francis & Dorothy" (I believe) in the 1600's. The ship sailed into Philadelphia where the original first Umsteads, (back then it was Umstaddt, then Umstadt, then Umstad, then Umstead), settled after coming over from Germany. My father, now deceased, was the former Managing Editor of the New York Daily News and has written a book about his growing up, his biological family's history, as well as our current family's history. Several relatives whom I've NEVER met but that I DID know about contacted me after I posted a letter in Ancestry.Com and asked if they could receive a copy of his book. Anyhow, as I told them, if you'd like a copy I'd be happy to send you one. While I am NOT familiar with your name, I'm sure we're related somewhere down the line! My wife, Brigid, and I have one son, Elliot, age 11, and a 3 1/2 year old daughter, Riya, whom we adopted from India about 2 years ago. I work in In-Pt Mental Health at our local county hospital. Feel free to write if you wish & let me know if you want a copy of his book. Cheers, Eric

She had a cousin Louis whose son was named Philip after my grandmothers father and Philip's sister was named Grace after my grandmothers mother. we did have a huge family reunion in NJ in the 50s and I even have the newspaper article about the reunion that my grandmother had kept. I also have many pictures of the Umstadter family as well as a family history book that my grandmother had started and I brought it up to date in 1987. I have information on the family going back to my grandmother's grandfather.

I would be very interested in tracing back to see if we are from the same Umstadter family.
Umstead family bible

My wife, Nancy Kline (born 08/15/1959) has a family bible that she received from her father, Hosea Irvin Umstead Kline, born 08/04/1923. His parents were Irvin Kline and Ella Minerva B Umstead (born 04/01/1894). Ella and Irvin were married 11/08/1919. We have Ella's baptisimal certificate and Irvin and Ella's marriage certificate. I'm not sure who Ella's parents were but I believe it to be one of the children identified below.

The bible originally belonged to Nathan Umstead (born 11/12/1799) and Elizabeth Umstead (nee Gotshall, born 12/04/1811) It is apparently from the era of their wedding on 12/29/1830. Births recorded in the bible are "Daughter" 11/14/1831, Josiah, 04/14/1834, Magdaleene, 07/09/1836, William, 12/02/1838, Catherine, 11/16/1844, Jacob, 08/15/1848, Nathan, 11/14/1850

The family resided in the Berk County, PA area.

We've also got a book of pictures and a few portraits that appear to be from the era but the pictures are not identified.

We also found inside a hand drawn, PA dutch style, certificate, that appears to be a marriage certificate. The writing is PA dutch, a german variation. We can't make out who it is about but the year is 1839. Month begins with an M and ends in z, seems like March. Day is 18.

There are some other bibles, in German, that might be related though hey apear to be from the Kline side but I can't be sure.

I suppose if there is interest, I can scan these documents and post them somewhere.

Ed.

We also have a baptisimal certificate for Harvey B Umstead dated 09/27/1890. It indicates Harvey's birthdate is 10/04/1874. I'll bet Harvey is Ella's father.

Church was Schwenksville Mennonite Church.

Ed, you said: "We've also got a book of pictures and a few portraits that appear to be from the era but the pictures are not identified.... We also found inside a hand drawn, PA dutch style, certificate, that appears to be a marriage certificate."

I would LOVE to have .jpgs of the pictures and marriage certificate! Or a scan of the bible pages, if you can do so without damaging them?

Would you mind if we posted them on the Umstead "Genealogy Central" website? It is going up at www.umstead.org and we hope to include family pictures, genealogy info, cemetery info, etc.

Please take a minute to stop by and let us know what you think.

Thanks so much!
Lynn Marshall,
webmistress,
www.umstead.org
It's quite a lot of data (600 dpi scans) so why don't you e-mail me a snail mail address at ed@sagers.org and I'll send you a CD. Then you can adjust resolution to fit your needs.

Hi, I'm Ralph Umstead, originally from Collegeville,Pennsylvania, born 10-25-43 ,and have lived in Florida since 1956. My father, Harry Umstead was born 6-23-07,and my mother is Margaret Miller Umstead, also from Collegeville, born 5-5-08. My father had two sisters, Beatrice and Emma Louise Umstead. My grandparents were Harry and Alice Hennesy Umstead of Collegeville in Montgomery County. I have been trying to find out more on the earlier generations. I have a Civil War musket With JHU 1864 carved in the stock (from Jacob H Umstead). I remember my mother and Aunt Emma had talked about the ship of our decendents coming over in the 1600's, I think 1692. I hope this helps you other Umsteads. Ralph

Hi, Umstead's,
My gr.grandfather was William E. Umstead, born in NC and later moved to KY. His father was Elisha. There is a big Umstead family reunion this weekend in Kulpsville, PA. Anyone going?
I live in Indianapolis and have 3 children, 17, 14, 9. I do clinical research in a university setting. I would like to hear more about Eric's book. I don't have any civil war memorabelia but I do have WWI stuff from my great uncle, Compton Umstead. He disappeared sometime after he came back to the states. Has anyone heard of him or know what happened to him? My grandmother tried to find him for years and I've taken up the search. Look forward to hearing from you.

Also, Thomas Umstead married Elizabeth Rittenhouse. I don't know as yet whether he is a relative of mine or not.

I have gotten much information in the past few days, and everytime I check on the Umstead's there is a Rittenhouse name mentioned.

I have to do more searching, as soon as I find out more I'll let you know.

Have a nice weekend
Joanne

To All Umsteads: FYI, you might like to check out the website with the following address: "www.umsteadcoalition.org" . There is a state park in North Carolina named the Umstead State Park after former Gov. William B. Umstead of North Carolina. He was my father's relative (not sure which) who died in office in 1954 so there is a park, a highway, a bridge named after him. Thought you might be interested in this bit of info.

My husband's grandfather was Louis Umstadter. We went to a large family reunion somewhere in Southern N.J. in the 50's. We too have civil war momentos. One a gun and the other a sword. We also have a picture of a Lt.Umstadter with it. Coincidence or possibly name change? I notice on genealogy charts Umstadt, Umstead and Umstadter are listed together. My husband's father was Philip and he is Gerald Umstadter. They were all from New York.

Hannah Umstead Evans,my great grandmother is buried at the Mt Lebanon cemetery,Lebanon Pa. She died in 1917 at the age of 84. She was from Monocacy Pa originally and had a brother, Frank. This Umstead family owned canal boats. Their business was along the Schuylkill River between Philadelphia and Reading. My 86 year old mother remembers Umstead relatives in Birdsboro and Geigertown also. She believes that Hannah's parents are buried in an old church cemetery in Douglassville Pa.She has an old picture of this place and we always talked about going to search for these graves.
