Is it clear that the witness James Uncle was James Sr., and not James Jr.? If you can send it to me electronically, I'd appreciate it. My e-mail is:
cjschopfer .."at".. gmail .."dot".. com.

Have you found Mary Dennis Uncle in the 1860 census, and if so, what was reported about her household?

Chris

James Uncle was still alive in 1863 when the Civil War benefits were applied for because he signed as a witness. I'm guessing he married Mary Dennis after 1840 because Charles Dennis was the last sibling I could find and he was born between 1840 and 1842.
If you ever see anything on Mary Dennis Uncle, please let me know.
Thanks again for your responses.

efanslau:

Now this is starting to make sense! Evidently there are at least two Smithvilles in NJ--one in Atlantic County, the other near Mt Holly in Burlington, which is quite close to where my ggg-gf James B. Uncles is buried. The "Manual of the Legislature of NJ" (http://www.archive.org/stream/manualoflegislat1884mull/manua...) has the following passage: "

"About sixteen years ago [I think this means about 1867] Mr. Smith went to a little
manufacturing village, two miles from Mount Holly, and,
liking it, he bought it. That is to say, he bought the
manufactory and the houses standing there, which he
converted into residences for his workmen. It was
then called Shreveville. He expended, it is stated, S300,-
000 in improvements. He has a natural liking for iron,
and ] ,200 tons of it have been used in the building of
houses and in otherwise imi^roving and ornamenting the
real estate. He built a fine hall for the use of the opera-
tives, and has employed and j^aid a band-master, for a
number of* years, to teach the mechanics instrumental
music. He altered the name of the village to Smith ville,
after himself. A weekly journal, called the Smithville
Mechanic, devoted to mechanics, science and literature, he
has published there for 'a long time. Altogether, Mr.
Smith estimates that he has invested over half a million
of dollars in Smithville. He gives steady employment
to over one hundred men the year round, and his manu-
factory is one of the most thriving industries in that sec-
tion of the State."

That information, plus the fact that the James Uncle you are researching was designated "Sr." suggests that your James is my James. (I had thought maybe yours was the 17-yr-oold James in the 1850 census, but he seems too young to be married to a woman who had a son killed in the war.)

So, I would now guess that either James B. Uncle was married three times, or that Jane, the name of the woman with whom he lived in 1850, was a nickname for either your Mary or mine.

If James owned the house referred to in Mary's obit, land records may provide more insight.

Chris

Hi,
Thanks for replying to my message. The information I have, which isn't much, came from paperwork I found in the NJ State Archives relating to death benefits applied for by the mother (Mary Dennis Uncle) and the siblings of Charles Dennis who was killed in the Civil War. Apparently, James Uncle was Mary's second husband. I also found an obituary for Mary that states she died at her husband's home near Shreveville (which was later renamed Smithville). I couldn't find a death certificate for Mary and I was hoping I could find something through James Uncle - maybe burial records through a church.
Thanks for your help.
I just found my James Uncle's grave site:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=un...;

It identifies him as James B. Uncle, d 28 Oct 1855, age 55, buried Pemberton Baptist Cemetery, Pemberton, Burlington County. The age is consistent with census records, and Pemberton isn't far from Southampton Twp, where he was in the 1850 census. I have never seen his middle initial before; I wonder if this is a clue as to his mother's maiden name.

This record makes me doubt that my James was the same person as yours. Do you know if your James was alive in 1863 when Mary (Dennis) Uncle was living in his house? Your James' house was in Atlantic County; I have seen no indication that my James ever left northern Burlington Co. I suspect your James was the 17-yr-old James living with a non-Uncle family in Southampton Twp at the time of the 1850 census, possibly the son or nephew of my James.

Re: Jane (Malsbury?) m. James Uncles, 1820s, NJ

Hi, efanslau, thanks for asking:

I saw your post about Mary Dennis Uncle (at http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=2&p...), and had a hunch that "your" James Uncle and "mine" are the same man. As you can see, I posted my original query about Jane Malsbury in 2005, before I found my ancestor Mary Uncles Havens' death certificate, which states that Mary U. Havens' mother was Mary Montgomery.

My James was born about 1800, according to the 1850 census, which is the last contemporary record I have of him. (Your post suggests that he was living in 1863--may I ask the source of this information?) The 1850 census shows him in Southampton Twp, Burlington County, NJ, as laborer, with (presumed wife) Jane, 50; Jane 11; and Joseph, 13. (Daughter Mary, my ancestor, was already married at this point, which expalains why she was not listed, although I have not found Mary and her husband, Charles Havens, in the 1850 census). Also living with them was Elizabeth Jones, age 41. In the 1850 US census, quite a few young and minor Uncles were living in other households, including: James, age 17; James, age 9; Laticia, age 19; Laticia, age 16; Sarah, age 22; Jane, age 5; and Amelia, age 9.

He is listed in the 1840 US census as James Uncle, Northampton Twp, Burlington County, NJ, age 30-40. Household shows one male U-5; one male 5-10; one female U-5; one female 5-10; and one female 30-40.

He is listed in the 1830 census (incorrectly transcribed as James "Ude" by Ancestry.com), Northampton Twp, Burlington, age 20-30, on same page as Sarah Uncle (his widowed mother). James' household shows one female 30-40; one female 5-10; and 2 females U-5.

The earliest record I have of James is the 1824 will of his father, Joseph Unkles. James' siblings included Rebeccah (m 21 Aug 1802 Mathias Gibbs, Burlington); Susanna/Susan (m 20 Feb 1808 Alexander Gale, Burlington); Formealia/Amelia (m 05 Mar 1808 Benjamin Pettit, Burlington); Phebe; Joseph (presumably the man who married 27 Dec 1822, Nancy Homer [Horner?]); and possibly Elizabeth.

As I mentioned, the 1884 death certificate of Mary (Uncle) Havens names James as her father and Mary Montgomery as her mother. I have come to wonder--because the information on the certificate was provided by someone other Mary Uncle Havens herself, and because the 1850 census suggests that James wife in 1850 was named Jane--if the name Mary Montgomery has been mis-reported. (I have long wondered if Mary Uncle Havens' mother was actually a Malsbury; this hunch stems from the fact that my grandmother's middle name was Malsbury, and I have found few places where that name could have come from in her family tree.) The odd thing about the idea of Mary Montgomery as Mary Uncles Havens' mother is that Mary U. Havens' mother would have been James Uncles' first wife (or out-of-wedlock partner), as Mary U. Havens was born 22 Sep 1829, according to her death certificate. Until reading your post, I had thought the Jane Uncles listed in the 1850 census was his second wife. Now I wonder if the Jane shown on the 1850 census was James' first wife, and that the person who provided the information for the death cerficate mis-identfied Mary's mother. Or if James could have actually had three wives/partners. Many unanswered questions, and few records to answer them!

I have found neither will, 1860 census record, nor death certificate for James, and the 1850 census indicates he owned no real property then. Nor have I found any contemporary records relating to either Mary Montgomery or Mary Malsbury. It's been a while since I searched, and I don't recall whether I checked Atlantic County and the 1860 census carefully, so given the information you cited about Mary Dennis Uncle, it's worth looking again.

Regards,

Chris
