I have a letter my grandmother typed to Larry Underwood on December 2, 1995. It reads as follows:

"Dear Larry,

Harold gave me the newspaper that has Albert Grant Underwood's Obit. in it. It is so fragile that we don't think it can be safely copied, so I will write what it said. Also, there is a piece missing so I can only guess what may have been written. This obit was in the Thursday, September 16, 1915 issue of THE KALIDA RECORD, Volume Thirteen, Number 37.

As written:

Albert Grant Underwood

The entire community was shocked on Friday morning to learn of the death of A.G. Underwood, which occured about midnight. Mr. Underwood attended council meeting on Monday evening and after this complained of not feeling well. He took to his bed and as no improvement in his condition was forth-coming it was decided that an operation was necessary. Dr's Jacobson and Douglass of Toledo were called. The operation was performed about 10 o'clock on Thursday evening and Mr. Underwood never recovered from its effects.

A.G. Underwood was once of the leading business men of this community and always a hustler. For many years he was a member of the Kalida Tile & Lumber Co., but, about three years ago severed his connection with that firm and embarked in the grocery and meat business. He built up a business of which anyone could feel proud. He was a congenial, obliging progressive citizen and his place will be hard to fill in our community. Deceased was a member of our village council, Kalida Lodge F. & A. M., and Kieferville K. of P. Lodge. He was always active in anything for the betterment of the village and a kind and desirable neighbor. The funeral was conducted by the local lodge of Masons at the N.E. church (the largest ever held by business men Rev. Snow ??) (Albert was born July 27th, 1867 ??) died September 9, 1915, aged 48 years, 1 month, and 12 days. He was married to Flora Campbell, April 6, 1890. Ten children have been born to them. Elden and Leroy deceased. Iva Steman and Vearl Vandemark, of Defiance; Frederick, of Continental; Forrest, Olen, Desso, Lawrence and Edna at home. His father, one sister, seven brothers and two grand children survive. Mother, three brothers and one sister deceased.

In the piece partiall missing it also has "4:17-18" which I assume was a bible verse and " Contin " which may have been the cemetery???

Harold really has possesion of this newspaper and he says you are welcome to look it over if you'd like.

Sincerely,
Audrey"

I'd like to add anything with ??? means she was not sure is she was reading it right.

I once remember my grandmother telling me that the doctors actually performed the surgery on Albert on his own kitchen table and that he had a burst appendix. I'd love to have this 'family lore' confirmed by someone else in the family.
